Teenagers are often influenced in their behaviors or situations by
others of the same age. This is called “peer pressure”. Do the
advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages?
It is argued that teenagers’ actions and behaviors tend to be affected by
their friends, which is usually referred to as “peer pressure”. While this trend seems to bear several benefits, it has more negative effects.
Admittedly, teenagers may somehow reap several benefits from peer
pressure. In terms of education, for example, being influenced by others of the same age may force them to make progress in learning process and do their best to be as good as their peers. This may allegedly enhance their self-discipline in studying, which may undoubtedly boost their study efficiency, leading to an improvement in academic performance. However, this line of reasoning is not sound. The thing is peer pressure in fact does more harm than good as it may make teenagers feel stressful sorrow when they have to try hard just to surpass their peers. This may put them in depressing situations, especially when juniors fail to follow their friends, they may become embarrassed and sorrow, preventing them from enjoying life.
Moreover, peer pressure also lowered the display of creativity and
distinction of teenagers. To put it simply, on grounds that they are scared of being boycotted or abomination, juniors may not dare to stand out from their friends. They may be influenced by their friends and follow what they do. This may certainly have a negative impact on their creative thinking, which may play a key role in learning process and boost their studying performance. In conclusion, peer pressure may have some beneficial aspects regarding to education. However, the disadvantages of this trend may outweigh the advantages.
