1. Introduction

"Self-awareness is the ability to focus on yourself and how your actions, thoughts, or
emotions do or don't align with your internal standards. If you're highly self-aware, you
can objectively evaluate yourself, manage your emotions, align your behavior with your
values, and understand correctly how others perceive you (Encyclopedia.com, 2014)

As a leader who joined the healthcare industry, the portfolio management module is an
opportunity for me to understand myself using various assessment tools. Self-assessment can
provide insight into leaders’ true knowledge and can help to identify gaps in my leadership
styles. The self-assessments helped me to understand my weaknesses, strengths, opportunities,
learning styles & leadership potential, etc.

This portfolio initially truly discusses my personal and professional skills. It will be helpful to
understand the good and lacking areas in my skills. I have analyzed my listing skill,
Communication skills and habits, emotional intelligence, learning skills, learning management
skills, Personality type, Problem-solving skills, and my SWOT analysis. Also, I have gone
through numerous online questionnaires to assess myself and understand my strengths and
weakness. It will have helped me to develop my skills furthermore.

As the next task about my potential, the Belbin questionnaire and SMART action plan were used
for identified skills in my professional life. It has helped me to focus on my professional life.

The next section has discussed the importance of networking in professional life. Also, platform
my own LinkedIn profile and understand the potential of being connected with professionals in a
similar industry as well as other industries. Next, I have discussed my leadership experience.
Finally, I have added my personal branding for this portfolio.

2. My Personal Awareness

“Personal awareness is a psychological state in which people are aware of their traits, feelings
and behavior. Alternatively, it can be defined as the understanding of oneself as an individual
entity.” (ResearchGate, n.d.)In other words, self-awareness is distinguishing one’s personality
which includes strengths, weaknesses, thoughts, beliefs, and emotions.

In my personal life, I believe that knowing my personal and professional awareness is more
important to my career success. Also, it’s very important to my personal success. Hence, I must
evaluate myself self what are my weakness, Strengths How can I minimize my negative traits
and how can I develop my positive traits. Also, it is important to prevent future mistakes. Self-
awareness is an important tool to improve personal function. It involves the perception of
personality as well as what our strengths and weaknesses are. Coping with our insecurities and
weakness will improve stress management and relieve tension from overwhelming situations. It
is very important to understand what makes us susceptible so we can find the strength to move
on positively. (SSRF English, n.d.)

As a young healthcare executive, I recognized the value of being conscious of personal and
professional characteristics. That is critical for me to attain my professional objectives. In order
to achieve my goal of becoming a healthcare operation in charge, I must collaborate with both
internal and external customers. As a result, my abilities are critical to my success. I can create
relationships with others if I understand my talents and weaknesses.

As the in charge of a medical laboratory, I am responsible for thousands of internal and external
customers. I must deliver excellent customer service to our clients. In addition, I am responsible
for more than sixty employees, so I need to improve my leadership skills to deal with more
people.

Through this session I have identified which type of skills should I have evaluated. Hence, I have
selected to evaluate my skills of listening, Emotional intelligence, Negotiation skills, Problem-
solving skills, decision-making skills, communication skills, teamwork are some of the identified
personal skills
7

2.1 Self-awareness of Personal Skills

2.1.1 Listening Skills

People tend to mix up listening and hearing. Nonetheless, they are not the same in the true sense.
We all hear others, but listening requires us to understand and understand what we hear. This is
when the value of listening comes into play. Listening is an art form, but the majority of people
take it for granted. Listening involves conscious attempts to comprehend the context and the
meaning of another's remarks. A excellent listener is more likely to communicate effectively.
(Admin, 2021)

To evaluate my listening skills, I have gone through an online questionnaire. (Appendix 01).
which was published at wisconsinrticenter.org and got 100 (above the average). That says I am a
good listener; However, I have not achieved a superior position on the score.

The reason for this document is to evaluate my listening strengths and weaknesses. It is also to
assist determine was to improve on my weaknesses. My overall score on the listening self-
assessment was 100. This puts me in the above-average listening skill category. I have always
considered listening to be one of my greater skills, but after this evaluation, I have been able to
find some of the areas that need improvement.

Some of my good areas in listening are that I always aim to learn something by listening to
people speak., Also I can block out any interruptions like the speaker’s actions or presence so
that I can exclusively listen to the speaker’s speech.

If the speech is not interesting, I am not going to listen to it actively, that is my weak point in my
listening skill. I think if I can take notes in that uninteresting speech, I can catch some valuable
information in the speech. if I feel that a speaker is not correct on their topic I want to listen
because it could be the statements that I know about a subject are wrong or there could be
different viewpoints. Learning various viewpoints would help me better understand how people
process information on different subjects. I think my next weakness is maintaining eye contact
with the speaker. I worry that this tends to make the speaker uncomfortable and try to relieve as
much pressure as possible on them. I must mitigate this weakness also.
8

Figure 1: Summary of the outcome of the Listing Skills Awareness Questionnaire.

2.1.2 Self-Management Skills

Self-management, also known as "self-control" or "self-regulation," refers to the ability to

effectively control one's emotions, thoughts, and behaviors in a variety of contexts. This
encompasses stress management, postponing fulfillment, motivation, and planning and achieving
personal and academic goals. Students who have great self-management abilities come to class
prepared, pay attention, follow directions, and work independently with focus. Self-control in
children as young as five years old can predict major life outcomes such as graduation from high
school, physical health, income, single parenting, substance abuse, and criminal participation.
(sigma.nursingrepository.org, n.d.) (Transforming Education, n.d.)

To assess my self-management skills of myself I have gone through a self-assessment

questionnaire which has available on the web, and I understand I am at a good level in self-
management practices according to the score I received is 18 out of 24 (75%).

Self-control is more important than time management. I have demonstrated my ability to manage
my time well in this questionnaire. Time management allows us to schedule everyday duties so
that we can accomplish as much as possible. This will boost my productivity as well as my
motivation level. Self-management abilities will assist me in finishing my assignment on time or
ahead of schedule. I occasionally fail to fulfill deadlines due to a lack of free preparatory time for
the task. As a result, I did not receive an Excellent rating in this evaluation. Professionalism is a
must for developing self-management abilities; I will be able to focus on my work rather than
allowing my anger or emotions to control me.
9

However, because I did not obtain my entire score on the evaluation, I must also develop my
professionalism, according to the assessment. Because of my self-management talents, the odds
of you receiving a promotion or raise increase when I do my work consistently and have a strong
relationship with others.

Self Management Skills

Take responsibility for acting in a professional/Ethical manner
Show intellectual flexibility (be willing to see that there may be more than one way to solve a problem)

Evaluate your own potential for employment

Clarify personal values Set realistic objectives, priorities & standard

2.1.3 Learning Management Skill

Learning is defined as "a process that results in change as a result of experience, increasing the
potential for increased performance and future learning." (Ambrose et al, 2010, p. 3)
(www.queensu.ca, n.d.)

In this section I have gone through a questionnaire to evaluate my learning management skills. I
have achieved 71% (20 Mark out of 28) which shows average achievement.

Learning Management Skills

Learn through collaboration Use learning in new or different situations/contexts Develop, evaluate & adapt learning strategies
Set realistic objectives, priorities and standard

Demonstrate an awareness of learning processes Take responsibility for your own learning and personal
growth (monitor, evaluate and adapt your own…

00.511.522.533.544.5

Figure 3: Summary of the outcome of Learning Management Skills Questionnaire

According to the assessment, I am strong at setting priorities, standards, and objectives since I
prioritize and set standards for all of my tasks. As a result, it is critical for learning management.
However, I need to work on my learning management abilities, which include evaluation,
monitoring, and adapting learning methodologies, among other things. I also realized that in
order to advance in management, I needed to review, monitor, and modify my performance, as
well as work toward long-term objectives and goals.

A well-organized study schedule allows me to be clear about what I require and when I require
it. To reach my objectives, I should make a study plan and stick to it. A study timetable helps me
11

remember what I need to learn and when I need to learn it. As a result of the assessment, I need
to improve my collaborative learning skills. To break up the monotony of sitting alone, I need to
choose a few study partners with whom I am familiar and who are driven to get good grades. I
also enjoy sharing my knowledge with my coworkers.

2.2 Self-awareness of Professional Skills

2.2.1 Problem-solving skills

Problem-solving is the process of analyzing a problem and finding the best solution for that
scenario. This procedure entails determining the source of the problem (root cause analysis),
developing countermeasures, and applying the best solution for the scenario.(toolshero, 2020).

If a leader is good at addressing problems, he or she can lead their team to their objectives
without frustrating or confusing them. I will experience improved collaboration with team
members if I solve problems, eliminating the requirement for networks. Because we face diverse
issues every day in our professional lives.

To evaluate my problem-solving skill, I have gone through a questionnaire, I have achieved 72%
(23 marks out of 32). I think, I am not very good in problem solving it was proven with the
results of questionare. With more than 15 years my experience in healthcare industry I have
faced lot of challenges when I am involving providing better service to our customers.
Customers are expecting quick and efficient services from us. However due to day-to-day
problems some time we are not be able to meet customers’ expectations which expect from us.
At that time, I have to identify why we can’t provide expected service without breaking
customers’ expectations. As an example, If, our laboratory analyzer suddenly breakdown we
can’t issue the lab report accurately and timely. So, at that time we have to find a quick and
accurate solution to rectify that issue. Hence to face these types of problems I have to develop
my problem-solving skills. As I am learning as an MBA student, I have to improve my skills of
identify the key features, conceptualizing the issues, identify the options and carry out solutions.
‘Identify the problem’ is first step in solving problems. That may seem obvious; however, In
12

practice, I don't devote enough effort to defining problems, and as a result, I frequently execute
solutions too soon. But I had to define an issue, and I wanted to know what the problem was, and
what we should be achieving instead. Finally, I must consider how quickly and efficiently I can
implement this solution. I'll be able to build an action plan with my team after the problem has
been accurately identified. I believe I will need to use this method to locate the correct problem.
The next step I have to find the root cause of the problem. This should be done by looking for
overall patterns and asking a question about what, who, where, when, and how to better
understand the impact of the issue. If the problem is one that persists over time, it is often
necessary to communicate the problem to participants along with a range of solutions.
Communication should always begin with transparency. Because I need to be certain about my
strategy. I will get respect from others by demonstrating my transparency. After I've come up
with a few options, I can start putting them into action. This can be accomplished by making a
list with precise actions, dates, and prioritizing. The most crucial aspect of solutions is that they
should be enhanced continuously throughout.

2.2.2 Communication Skills

Communication is one of the most basic roles of management; without it, the leader would be
unable to make smart decisions, devise well-thought-out strategies, develop a healthy
organizational structure, or even be well-connected by his peers. For managerial and
organizational effectiveness, communication is critical. Employees that are more invested in
their work and have a better understanding of their jobs benefit from good communication.
Organizational difficulties are also avoided by communicating information in a clear, precise,
and timely manner. Employees will be unaware of what their teammates are doing, will have no
notion what their goals are, and will be unable to evaluate their performance if there is no
communication. Managers will be unable to issue instructions to their subordinates, and
management will be unable to receive the information needed to formulate plans and make
decisions if communication is disrupted.(Training Program on Effective Communication
Reading Material National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management,)

COMMUNICATION
Produce a variety of written documents (using appropriate
formats, accurate information spelling, punctuation and…
Verbal communication (speak fluently and confidently to a variety of audiences)

Offer constructive criticism

Listen actively and effectively Use appropriate language in a range of activities (essays,
reports, presentations, interviews)

Present oral/visual information competently

00.511.522.533.544.5

Figure 5: Summary of the outcome of Communication Skills

14

To evaluate my communication skills, I have gone through above questionnaire, As per the
above I have achieved 75% (24 Marks out of 32). As per the assessment results I am in good
position in communication skill, However I have to develop verbal communication such as fluent
speak, communicate confidently to the audience. Also, I must know how offer constructive
criticism.

Verbal communication is the most vital aspect of my professional life because one mistake in the
healthcare industry might harm human life. As healthcare professionals, we play a critical role in
the lives of those who are suffering from disease or impairments. A patient's health is
immediately damaged if there is poor verbal or written communication. As a result, as a
healthcare professional leader, I need to improve my communication abilities. In this session, I
learned how to do so.

When speaking with someone, pay attention to their body language and facial expressions. If
they appear uncomfortable or dissatisfied, the audience will not understand the message. When
communicating with people, make sure to utilize straightforward professional language. Also, we
don't want to communicate with our customers using large phrases or medical/clinical jargon.
Because it will compensate for any missed communication. However, I believe I have decent
listening skills and can actively and effectively listen to someone. Because it is a valuable ability
in the healthcare industry to listen without interrupting the speaker. In addition, I must improve
my writing talents by using good language, spelling, and clear writing skills. A single letter error
can have a significant impact on a patient's life. My language and presentation skills should to be
improved in order to establish a connection with the audience. I also need to learn how to
improve my ability to provide constructive criticism. ‘Honest, critical feedback can actually
strengthen your bond rather than degrade it.”—JUSTIN ROSENSTEIN, ASANA CO-
FOUNDER, As I learned the criticism should be do not make personal, be specific, keep it
positive and make it a dialogue.
15

2.2.3 Teamwork

Every now and again, a single brain is incapable of making vital judgments on its own. To
achieve a successful outcome, a human requires the cooperation and assistance of others. A team
is established when individuals get together on a common platform with the common goal of
completing a task. To guarantee optimum compatibility, team members should ideally come
from similar backgrounds and have a single aim. To provide their best, the team members must
complement each other and operate in tight cooperation as a single unit.
(managementstudyguide.com, n.d.)

To evaluate my skill of team work I have gone through below questionnaire and achieved 84%
(27 Mars out of 32),If I go through the results, I am feeling I am in a good position in skill of
team work . because without teamwork we can’t achieved any our expectation in healthcare
industry. For an example to issue a patient report our entire team is involving with their tasks,
cashiers issue the bill, Phlebotomist collect samples, Lab assistants process the sample, Lab
technologies issue the report, Data entry operators print the report finally report counter staff
issue the report to the patient. Day to day my staff and my self-doing heavy task which is
successful with our teamwork. Finally, we provide good service to our customers due to our
team effort.

But I need to work on my bargaining and delegation skills. Preparation is the first stage to
negotiating properly, thus I need to enhance my negotiation skills. I must fully comprehend the
situation. Have a firm understanding of what's at risk and run through all situations. Before I start
the negotiation, I'd like to know what they're asking for. Create a compelling argument for why
the other party should consider my request. This helps to keep the dialogue going.
TEAM WORK 16

Negotiate with individuals/groups Delegate and stand back

Assist and support others in learning

Adapt to the needs of the group/ team (take initiative, lead,

delegate, stand back, negotiate etc.)

Respect the views and values of others Plan with others (ensure clear goals, take responsibility,
and carry out appropriate tasks)

00.511.522.533.544.5

Figure 6: Summary of the outcome of Teamwork

2.3 Personal Awareness of Preferred Learning Style

A learning style is not in itself an ability but rather a preferred way of using one’s abilities
(Sternberg 1994). Individuals have different learning styles, that is, they differ in their ‘natural,
habitual, and preferred way(s) of absorbing, processing, and retaining new information and
skills’ (Reid 1995: viii)(Hatami, 2013) (Silverchair.com, 2019)

A learning style is the way that different people learn. The style of learning refers to an
individual’s preferred way to attract, process, realize and retain information. There are four key
learning styles visual, auditory, tactile, and kinaesthetic.(Raiyn, 2016) (Silverchair.com, 2019)

Every people have predominant or favored learning style, But sometime some people have
mixed learning styles also. To discover & observe my learning style, I have gone through online
questionnaire, My results was Auditory 35%, Visual 45% and Tactile 35% , as per the results of
the evaluation which was indicated as a visual learner. I can accept that because most of the time
I like visuals to learn. Visual learners prefer the use of images, maps, and graphic organizers to
access and understand new information.
17

As a visual learner, whether teachers/Lectures are using whiteboard, Smartboard or giving

presentation I have enough time to process and absorb visual cues. When possible, I have access
to supplementary handouts that detail subject matter through clear visuals whenever possible.
(Educationplanner.org, 2019)

As a visual learner I use images, diagrams, and various charts for my learning. When I was
learning in school, I used short notes for studying also. With visual learning style I can
understand quickly than others, In my working environment I use diagrams, Charts for my day to
day work, As an example when I am solving problem sometime I use fishbone diagram, A3
technique, Process charts etc.

Figure 7: Summary of the outcome of the preferred learning style questionnaire

18

2.4 Personal Awareness of Emotional Intelligence

Emotional intelligence, or EI, is the capacity to recognize and manage your own and other
people's emotions. People with high emotional intelligence are aware of how they feel, what
their emotions mean, and how their feelings affect others. (Mindtools, 2009)

According to Daniel Goleman, an American psychologist who helped to popularize emotional

intelligence, there are five key elements to it:

Self-awareness. – If I self-aware, I want to know, how my emotions and my actions can affect
the people around me.

Self-regulation. - Leaders who regulate themselves effectively rarely verbally attack others,
make rushed or emotional decisions, stereotype people, or compromise their values. Self-
regulation is all about keep on in control.

Motivation. - Self-motivated leaders work regularly toward their goals, and they have extremely
high specifications for the quality of their work.

Empathy- having empathy is critical to managing a successful team or organization. Leaders

with empathy can put themselves in someone else's situation. They help develop the people on
their team, contest others who are acting unfairly, give practical feedback, and listen to those
who need it.

Social skills- Great communicators are leaders who excel at the social skills component of
emotional intelligence. They're equally open to terrible news as they are to good news, and
they're masters at rallying their team behind them and getting them excited about a new mission
or project. (Mindtools.com, 2017)

To assess my Emotional intelligence, I have gone through online questionnaire published by

Emerald works Limited on https://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/ei-quiz.htm and achieved
good marks according to the interpretation table in figure 8. (Mindtools, 2009)
19

According to the survey results, I am emotionally intelligent and have good interpersonal
relationships. In my personal life, I am a little irritable, but I try to hide it and keep the
relationship going. However, I do occasionally vent my anger to others, but I will not do so in
the future. As a result, I'd like to attempt to keep my anger to a minimum. When I'm irritated, I
try not to make any snap decisions. I believe it will benefit both my personal and professional
lives.

Figure 8: Summary of the outcome of emotional intelligence questionnaire

20

2.5 Personal Awareness of Communication Habits

As per Lolly Daskal Most people, especially those in positions to inspire others, should learn
how to communicate effectively. Most people believe that good communication skills entail
being a good speaker, but it also entails learning to listen, studying body language, and
recognizing the gaps in a conversation. (Lolly Daskal, 2019)

According to the results of the questionnaire, I received a good grade. Because I am an excellent
communicator and listener. As a result, I believe this is a reasonable assessment of my
communication skills. As the supervisor of a medical laboratory, I must communicate with
people at all levels. I communicate with patients in general. When faced with the prospect of
hospitalization, they experience some emotional anguish. So, I’d like to keep up my good
communication habits. My communication habits have improved during the previous 15 years of
my working career. Reasons for saying that at the start of my professional career, I had more
difficulty communicating with and convincing patients. I was unable to control their feelings,
such as cancer patients, cardiac patients, and others. As a result, I believe I am now in an
excellent position in terms of communication habits.

Figure 9: Summary of the communication habit

21

2.6 Personal Awareness of Communication Style

Giving, receiving, and sharing information, or talking, writing, and listening or reading, are all
examples of communication. Listen carefully, talk or write clearly, and respect diverse points of
view.

Strong communication skills can help kids act together both face-to-face and in the online world.
Texting, chatting, and posting correctly depends on knowing how words and images affect
others. You can help kids develop their communication abilities by teaching them to use social
media responsibly, developing positive communication, and watching movies and TV shows that
underline the value of healthy communication. (www.commonsensemedia.org, 2019)

As per the university of Alvernia,Every person has a exclusive communication style, a way in
which they interact and talk information with others. There are four basic communication styles:
passive, aggressive, passive-aggressive, and assertive. (Alvernia University, 2019)

Passive - Individuals who use the passive communication style often act indifferently, giving
way to others. Passive communicators usually fail to express their feelings or needs, allowing
others to express themselves.

Aggressive- It’s often apparent when someone communicates in an aggressive manner. You’ll
hear it. You’ll see it. You may even feel it.

Passive-Aggressive- communication style users appear passive on the surface, but within he or
she may feel powerless or stuck, building up a resentment that leads to seething or acting out in
delicate, indirect or secret ways.

Assertive Thought to be the most effective form of communication, the assertive communication
style includes an open communication link while not being overbearing. Assertive
communicators can express their own needs, desires, ideas, and emotions, while also thinking the
needs of others. (www.commonsensemedia.org, 2019)

Actually, and honestly if I go through my communication style, I think I am positioning in

Assertive category, Because I have developed my communication stye last couple of years. I
believe I am improving my communication skills and I am giving leadership to my team in a
positive way and always I walk the talk to motivate my team. If there any mistake happens from
22

my team member, I use up to communicate it with very organized behavior by not getting
aggressive by managing my emotions. In overall I believe I am a good communicator and needed
to improve more to capture the future career prospects. But I have some issues to use some
languages like English. Hence, I have to develop my knowledge of languages also.

2.7 Personality Type Assessment Based on the Myers - Briggs Indicator

The Myer's Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) popular personality test web site, it is more useful to
take an idea regarding own personality. There are 4 main components of our personality, then
assigns us one of 16 possible personality types. The MBTI test is easy to take, and some versions
give us our results right away. (wikiHow, n.d.)

Extraverts enjoy interacting with their surroundings. They adore pushing boundaries and seeing
what the world is capable of. Many other circumstances and life's natural restrictions play a role,
but Extraverted personality types are more likely to take up the project and rely on the world
around them for approval.

Introverts are well-suited to many circumstances. A tendency to be taken helps these personality
types to pace themselves. They’re likely to listen to others more carefully. Very thoughtful,
Introverts enjoy more focused “alone time” – leading to more and deeper insights. And, while
sometimes too sensitive to their environments.

Intuitive People with the Intuitive attribute prefer to exercise their imaginations as they seek new
ideas and opportunities. They live their day-to-day lives just like any other personality type.

Observant people the phrase “real-time” was created with Observant individuals in mind.
They’re most in touch with what occurs in front of them, in the present.

Stated with a conclusion, people with the Thinking trait normally lean on objective information.
Knowledge is their crucial tool. Once these personality types gather the facts, they test their
options against logic and reason to see which decision, by those standards, demonstrates the most
useful or accurate.

People with the Sense personality trait often follow their hearts and emotions without even
realizing it. Feeling personality types tend to be loving, empathetic, and warm, to varying
23

degrees and in diverse ways. When the path forward is well-marked, those with the Judging
personality attribute feel most at ease. When it comes to dealing with unexpected obstacles,
prospecting individuals are far more adaptable.

Assertive individuals are self-confident, even-tempered, and repellent to stress. They don’t worry
too much, but this is different from apathy. However Turbulent individuals are success-driven,
willing to improve. They are always trying to balance their self-doubts by achieving more. Just
as they try themselves to become better. (16Personalities, 2021)

To test my personality type I have gone through the online personality test in personalities.com
developed by Analytics Limited, UK.
24

Figure 10:My personality type assessment results based on the Myers- Briggs indicator.
25

As per the questionnaire results in Figure 10, I have scored 57% Extraverted over Introverted.
65% of Intuitive over Observant. 30 % thinking over feeling. 72% judging over prospecting and
% assertive over turbulent. Overall, my personality can be presented as a ENFJ-A personalities
feel called to serve a better objective in life.

ENFJ – A are born leaders, which explains why these personalities can be found among many
notable leaders & teachers also. Their passion and personality allow them to encourage others
not just in their careers but in every arena of their lives, including their relationships. Few things
bring Protagonists a deeper sense of joy and success than guiding friends and loved ones to grow
into their best identities.

If I go through the questionnaire, Somewhat I can agree with this personality assessment.
Generally, find social activity stimulating. Also, I be likely to like entertaining in groups and
enjoy the enjoyment of parties. Also, I enjoy intangible ideas and theories. I mind having more
active feelings and like to think about future possibilities. I like to look at problems from the
perspective of everyone involved in a struggle to find the most balanced, Conflicts are very
stressful to me. Mostly I am decision-positioned and organized. I like to find resolutions and are
happy to explain why. However, I like to take concrete details and facts and also like to take
most logical and consistent solutions.
26

2.8 Personal SWOT Analysis.

To identify my strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats with related to professional life,
I have done a SWOT analysis.

Table 1 : Personal SWOT analysis

27

SWOT analysis was most important me to identify my Strengths, Weakness, Opportunities and
Threats, If I go through my SWOT analysis, I am a qualified medical laboratory technologist in
medical council Sri Lanka. So, I have authority to work anywhere of the country.

However, I have a significant career weakness because of my language skills. I wish to improve
my English speaking and writing skills. Because it has such a significant impact on my
professional life.

However, I have a significant career weakness because of my language skills. I wish to improve
my English speaking and writing skills. Because it has such a significant impact on my
professional life.

Also, I face difficulties for Event organizing, So I want to develop this skills immediately, Our
team is giving good help me to organizing part, Also I am not good marketer So I want to
develop my marketing and negotiation skills. Because in the private sector marketing skills
compulsory to do any job. If, I take example in healthcare sector we have to market our services,
I strongly believe without marketing any private sector company haven’t sustainable
opportunities to develop their business.

Hence, I am discussing threats for me, most of young personnel come up with good educational
qualification, Hence I have threat sometime there is a chance to take over our above positions
with low experience, also we have only few chances for join another competitive hospital
because there are few reputed private sector big hospitals in Sri Lanka. So, there are limited
opportunities to move to job to another same time job, If I can complete my MBA successfully
pay the way to another sector managerial opportunities also.

3. My Team Potential
3.1 Identify my own team potential through Belbin Questionnaire

A team becomes more than just a collection of people when a strong sense of mutual
commitment creates synergy, thus generating performance greater than the sum of the
performance of its individual members. (iEduNote.com, 2019)

As per Gustafson & Kleiner, Nowadays, teams are seen in every organization and the significant
amount of people agrees to the beneficial position of teams rather than individuals. The term
team is stated in the same sense as effectiveness, efficiency, problem-solving and success.
Referring to several authors, during the last years the utilization of teams and teamwork
increased significantly. (Gustafson & Kleiner, 1994; Guzzo & Dickinson, 1996; Salas, Burke &
Cannon-Bowers, 2000) (Rosenhauer, 2020)

As a leader, having self-awareness’s of my personal decision is very much important for me to

uplift my team potentials and minimize the weaknesses. Also, as a leader, identifying others
team potentials will help me to be success when leading team activities. In order to identify my
team management skills in professional life I have gone through Belbin questionnaire. As per the
Belbin questionnaire I am a good team worker. The overall outcome of the questionnaire is given
in Appendix 10 and summary of the outcome is as shown below in Figure 11.

Figure 11: Belbin Score Card Results

29

According to the mark sheet which I have attached above, I achieved highest mark for teamwork.
It is reflected my potential for teamwork. According to Belbin(1983) characteristic of team
worker is socially oriented and rather mild & Sensitive.

Second highest mark was received for plant, As per Belbin(1983) Plant characteristics are
Individualistic, serious-minded, unorthodox.

According to Belbin score card results, I strongly agree with the score because I believe I am a
team worker, as a Team Worker I am a most supportive member of a team. I believe, I am
sociable and concerned about others. I have ability to adapt with different situation and people.
Also quit bit I am perceptive and diplomatic. Also, I am a good listener. I am very concern about
my team for their personal and professional achievements. As an example, few months back we
faced more transportation difficulties due to Covid pandemic situation, but as healthcare worker
we were not able to work from home. My total no of team member count is 61. They all directly
report me however there two deputies in charges. At that time, I was arranging flexible duty shift
them and arrange transport them, Also, provide accommodation facilities to few members who
came from long distance. So, they are happy with the arrangements of that kind of situation.
Also, I travel daily more than 100 kms per day. That also motivated staffs to come their duties
without negative impression. Also, I am very diplomatic when it comes to team activities. As a
leader we have achieved all our department annual goals more than 100% with collaborating
with my team. All the time team with myself ready to provide good customer service to our
customers. Hence, I am not thinking twice to accept any professional life challenge because I am
sure my team they are doing well as a family. I am to prevent interpersonal problems within a
team and allow everyone to participate effectively. As per Belbin (1983) Team worker’s
strengths are the Talent to respond to people and situations and to encourage team spirit. Also, as
per Belbin (1983) Indecision at moments of crisis and some failure to provide a clear lead to
others. Sometimes I also failed to provide clear directions to the team. As an example in the last
covid pandemic period (4th Waive) we faced more difficulties to handle patients. Because no of
patients drastically increased per day. So we had to increase the capacity of human resources also
analyzers for do the tests. Actually, I felt many difficulties with crisis situation. Most of new
people reluctant to join healthcare jobs, they afraid to work as a front line healthcare
professional. Also, there are reagents and consumables shortage for analyzers due to high
30

demand of the tests. So that kind of weakness I have to eliminate immediately believed I can
improve my crisis management skills during short period.

As per Belbin(1983) Plants are innovators and inventors and can be highly creative. They
provide the seeds and ideas from which key developments spring. Generally, they prefer to
operate by themselves at some distance from the other members of the team, using their
imagination and often working in an unorthodox way. They tend to be introverted and react
strongly to criticism and praise. Their ideas may often be radical and may lack practical
constraint. They are independent, clever and original and may be weak in communicating with
other people on a different wavelength. If I go through my professional life, I have implemented
good innovative ideas. As an example, I have given good lean ideas to our company to minimize
waste of reagent and consumables. I have taken lead to process development,

3.2 SMART Action plan to improve personal team potential

The first section of my self-awareness portfolio gave me the opportunity to analyze my skills and
discover where I am strong and where I need to improve. Based on the Belbin questionnaire, I
identified my own team potential, and as a result, I am a strong team worker and innovator. To
be perfect in one's professional life. I realized that I needed to improve my skills and activities in
order to advance my career and become a leading figure in the industry. As a result, I created a
SMART action plan to provide me with a goal to strive for in my professional perfection
journey. The plan incorporates the five criteria of a goal: specific, measurable, attainable,
relevant, and time bound, allowing me to achieve my objectives in a timely and effective
manner. With what I've learned in this module, I've decided to set goals for myself in the next six
months, which I've listed below.

1. Improve my listening skill

2. Build good teamwork with my team
3. Build lean culture in my department
4. Improve presentation skills.
5. Professional development of staff

4. Importance of being part of a network.

4.1 Introduction to network and its general benefits

Meeting new people who share a profession, industry, or interests is what networking is all
about. Networking entails the exchange of ideas and information between these individuals.
(Eatough, 2021)

Job advancement necessitates professional networking. Many people associate networking with
difficult situations, cheesy get-togethers, and the idea of "selling" yourself.

Despite its negative connotations, networking is all about building long-term relationships and
establishing a favorable reputation over time. It means meeting and getting to know people who
can assist and may be able to assist in return. (Michael Page, 2021)

Sharing, not taking, is the goal of networking. It's all about building trust and assisting one
another in achieving common goals. Engaging with contacts on a regular basis and looking for
ways to help them strengthens the relationship.

Network can provide, fresh perspectives and ideas to aid you in your job. A crucial benefit of
networking is exchanging information regarding issues, experiences, and ambitions since it
allows you to get new insights that you might not have considered otherwise.

Networking has the benefit of allowing you

more visible and noticeable, which is important for job advancement. Attending professional and
social gatherings on a regular basis will help to get your name known. By providing important
information or tips to individuals who need them, you can assist to establish your reputation as
someone who is informed, trustworthy, and supportive. (Michael Page, 2021)

Expanding your network can lead to new business prospects, job advancement, personal
development, or just fresh knowledge. Active networking keeps you top of mind when
possibilities arise, such as job openings, and boosts your chances of being introduced to possibly
relevant people or receiving a referral.
37

Networking is a fantastic way to share best practices, learn about your peers' company strategies,
and keep up with the newest industry trends. A large network of well-informed, interconnected
contacts provides more opportunities to learn about fresh and useful knowledge.

Of course, the goal of networking is to build and maintain professional relationships, but work
connections may also lead to some of the greatest and longest-lasting friendships. Because your
networking contacts are likely to be like-minded people with similar aims to you, your
professional support network is likely to flow over into your personal friendships.

4.2 The use and benefits of professional online network

As per Hamilton,2009 Relationships form online social networks because of computer-facilitated

talks about shared ideas or mutual interests. With hundreds of millions of monthly hits on a
variety of sites, online social networking is continuing to rise into the mainstream through
personal and professional computer use. Popular sites among the public, such as Facebook,
Myspace, Linkdin, are gaining traction among businesses, and are being used to promote events,
provide tutorials and training, facilitate discussions, and post useful information in academic
libraries, law firms, and government agencies. (Hamilton et al., 2009)

You can use networking to find the ideal opportunity for you. When you reach out to people,
they get familiar with your personal brand. Your personal brand is the distinct combination of
talents, knowledge, and personality that you choose to portray. Others might use it to see if you
are the best candidate for the position, Furthermore, networking allows you to build contacts
with people who are knowledgeable about the business or organization in which you are
interested. These professionals may be willing to share their knowledge and experience with you,
allowing you to make better decisions. It's critical to hire the right professionals to assist you in
transitioning between jobs or careers, such as industry veterans or career counselors. These
experts will be able to advise you on how to acquire your dream job with your preferred
organization based on their previous experience. Networking is a useful tool in your search for
unexplored opportunities. The underground job market is genuine, and it offers job searchers a
lot of opportunities. You could, for example, contact people who are aware of unfilled positions.
38

They are likely to consider employing you or referring you for the position if you are a strong
candidate for the position.

LinkedIn is the world's largest business-oriented social networking site for professionals. It has a
global membership of over 500 million people in over 200 countries. With the use of social
media, you can develop an online professional brand that can help open doors to opportunities
and networks that you might not have been aware of otherwise. (Rycraft, 2018)

I'll discuss the LinkedIn online social networking platform in this section, which I've utilized to
improve my professional networking skills. LinkedIn is an online professional networking site
that allows users to interact with others in a range of fields.

42

Figure 16: Learning Via LinkedIn

There are lot of opportunities to learn through LinkedIn. Because all my selected groups post
their learning sessions daily. Mostly I like to watch videos which relevant to my professional
life. New laboratory techniques, new analyzers and method and new technologies, I am learning
through LinkedIn. So, LinkedIn more useful for my career developments.
43

4.3 Importance of being networked with a professional institution

A professional body (sometimes known as a professional institute) is an organization that

consists of individuals who are linked with a specific profession, interest, or occupation.
Professional bodies will have specialized knowledge, skills, and expertise in academic principles
relevant to their members' professions or occupations, which will aid in their professional
development and advancement. (theweldinginstitute.com, 2020)

Most of professional organizations providing continuous education, lectures workshops and

other learning opportunities. Due to member of Sri Lankan medical council registered MLT and
diploma holder in Sri Lankan standard institute, I have more learning opportunities I have
mentioned here about my achievements from the memberships for my career development. Also
I am active member in Sri Lanka accreditation board(SLAB), Because our hospital has granted
ISO 15189. So I have participated many more process developments, Quality standardizations,
Laboratory management trainings.

5. Personal Leadership Potential

5.1 Overview of Leadership.

Successful companies distinguish themselves by recognizing leadership potential, establishing

the appropriate development activities for them, and quickly advancing high-potential employees
into key development responsibilities. Being more professionally competent in an area where the
individual now works, taking on greater responsibility in another area of the organization, and
finally taking on leadership responsibilities are all examples of growing leadership potential. We
do know that, regardless of the direction, leadership potential is a combination of personality and
cognitive ability. (AAI Assessments, 2020) At first appearance, the word "leadership potential"
may appear to be too subjective to be meaningful. This technique can assist businesses in
identifying the most promising internal candidates for leadership positions.
(www.bridgespan.org, 2021)

5.1.1 Different Leadership Styles

Autocratic leadership

As per Chand, 2012,An authoritarian leader concentrates authority and makes decisions for
himself. Without consulting the workforce, he issues orders, assigned tasks, and delegated
responsibilities. The leader assumes complete authority and responsibility. Threats and
punishment are used to maintain autocratic rule. Subordinates carry out his orders. He is
unconcerned about their viewpoints and does not allow them to influence the decision. He feels
that because of his power, he is the only one who can make the right decision in a given
situation. (Chand, 2012)
48

Transformational Leadership

In transformational leadership, the leader instills a vision in his or her followers and then
encourages and enables them to realize it. The vision's leader also serves as a role model.(IMD,
2021)The conventions of the firm are constantly being "transformed" and improved through
transformational leadership. Employees may have a basic set of responsibilities and goals to
complete each week or month, but the leader is continuously pushing them beyond of their
comfort zones. (Becker, 2020)

Transactional Leadership

In today's world, transactional leaders are fairly common. These bosses give their staff bonuses
based on the work they do. A frequent example of transactional leadership is a marketing staff
that earns a quarterly bonus for assisting in the generation of a particular number of leads by the
end of the quarter. (Becker, 2020) A transactional leader, akin to a pacesetter, is laser-focused on
performance. The manager provides specified incentives usually in the form of monetary
rewards for achievement and disciplinary action for failure under this leadership style.
Transactional leaders, unlike pacesetters, are also focused on mentorship, instruction, and
training in order to attain goals and reap the benefits. (Indeed Editorial Team, 2021)

As someone that has progressed through the ranks of an organization from the ground floor to
the executive level, I am uncertain that leaders are born rather than manufactured, and that
people can be trained to be good leaders. If a person is born with unique leadership abilities, he
or she must also have experience and well-honed leadership qualities in order to operate as a
flawless leader in any situation.

As an example, I was joined Hemas hospital in 2011 as a medical laboratory technologist, within
one year I was promoted to Deputy in charge position in same lab under the direction of former
Director of laboratory. After within another one year I was promoted as Lab in charge in Kandy
Laboratory, finally 04 outer labs were controlled by me. Currently I am working as Main lab in
charge in the main hospital. 61 employees directly reported to two deputies in charges and they
reported me. I want to say our management was identified my managerial skills and pave the
way to achieve my career goals.
49

5.2 My leadership traits

I've realized that assessing my own leadership abilities and attributes can help me be more
successful in my personal career progress. As a result, I need to know both my strengths and
weaknesses in terms of leadership.

To Identify my leadership traits, I have gone through questionnaire which developed by

Northouse 2013. The questionnaire was distributed among my peers and subordinates in order to
gain a better understanding of my leadership qualities, and I completed a self-assessment
questionnaire to compare myself to others.

Figure 21: My leadership traits (Northouse LTQ)

According to the LTQ, I have achieved more than 4.5 average for Conscientious, Persistent
Perceptive, Articulate. I believe these are my strongest leadership traits. Also, I have given marks
more than 4 for these traits. Hence, I can confirm that these my traits are strong than other traits.
However, I have marked full marks for Friendly, Self-assured and Self-confident but my team
was not given highest marks for those traits. Hence, I have to think about that separately and
seriously.
50

According to the score, I should instantly improve my empathy, sensitivity, and self-confidence.
Because they have had a direct impact on my professional success.

5.3 My leadership skills.

To assess my leadership skills, I have selected the leadership skills questionnaire developed by
Northouse in 2013. Figure 20 showcases results of the Leadership Skills Questionnaire that
designed to measure three broad types of leadership skills: administrative, interpersonal, and
conceptual.

Mesuring Three Broad Type of Leadership Skills

Conceptual skill

Interpersonal skill

Administrative skill

0 5 10 15 20 25 30 35

Figure 22:: My leadership Skills Self-Assessment (Northouse questionnaire)

According to Northouse, I am good for conceptual skill than other skills. Conceptual talents are
the abilities that enable a person to better understand difficult situations and come up with
innovative solutions. These talents are valuable from a management standpoint because persons
who possess them can tackle difficult working problems in a variety of ways. (Indeed Career
Guide, 2020) Hence I have developed my decision making skills, Interpersonal skills and
technical skills under the conceptual skills. I want to develop administrative skills furthermore.
Because I have less score compared to the other marks.
51

5.4 My leadership Behavior

To determine my leadership behavior, I used Northouse's (2013) task and relationship

questionnaire. The purpose of the questionnaire is to assess task-oriented and relationship-
oriented leadership behavior.

When I look at the statistics, I notice that I am more task oriented than relationship oriented. This
shows that I am more concerned with tasks than people, but the distinction between task and
relationship is little. As a result, I assumed I am performing both actions equally.

5.5 My leadership style

To examine my own leadership style relates to other styles of leadership have gone through the
questionnaire published by Northouse 2013. I have given below my overall summary of my
leadership style Also I have attached detail sheet annexure

Figure 24: My leadership style Self-Assessment (Northouse questionnaire)

According to the results of the self-questionnaire I am strong in Democratic leadership qualities
where I achieved marks 36% for Democratic leadership, however somewhat I am an
Authoritarian leader it mark is 34%. However, I accept I am a democratic leader because I have
experience regarding the type of leadership.

According to Cherry,2020 Democratic leadership, also known as participative leadership or

shared leadership, is a leadership style in which group members participate in decision-making.
Any institution, from private firms to schools to the government, may benefit from this sort of
leadership. (Cherry, 2020)

For instance, as part of my democratic leadership, we are implementing several lean initiatives in
our laboratory, thus there is a lean suggestion board where all staff can post their lean ideas.
Every month, we evaluate what are strong lean ideas and which ones we want to continue as lean
ideas, prioritizing and setting dates. In these types of tasks, our team is involved in all decision-
making points. As a result, the team is very excited to engage in the projects because they can
see what is going on. As a result, I can easily lead projects. My democratic leadership helps to
solving complex problems, it enhances team knowledge.
53

5.6 Critical incident analysis

Throughout my professional career as a leader, I have faced a variety of circumstances. As

shown in table 5-1, I chose one critical incident that I have faced and conducted a critical
incident analysis using leadership theories and practices that I have learned during this MBA
program.

Table 3:Background to the incident

6. Personal Marketing

Professional branding is the practice of creating a "mark" around your name or your job. This is
accomplished by having distinct strengths and messages that people recall. In person and online,
it's how you express and communicate your abilities, personality, and ideals. Your brand should
reflect your true personality in order to be genuinely memorable and meaningful. It is the climax
of your individuality. (careers.asha.org, 2020)

Personal branding is important not only in a world of layoffs, but also in a world where
employees may start jobs that they subsequently regret. It is also suggested that the self-
awareness that starts the personal branding process can be a helpful guide to professional
development, rethinking, and success (Rangarajan, Gelb and Vandaveer, 2017). Personal
branding, according to Rangarajan, Gelb, and Vandaveer (2017), allows individuals to build
emotional relationships with others, much like branded things can differentiate themselves from
commodities by eliciting an emotional response in buyers.

While developing my personal branding, I used website creation to highlight several of my key
characteristics. My unique features and abilities can be represented on the website. My
expectations for personal branding on the web. The purpose of this website is to inform readers
about my professional background, experience, talents, and qualifications. Achievement, and
how I might help them attain their goals or advance their careers. I utilized a free software
package called wix.com to create the website, which gives clever, easy navigation. Without
coding advice long and complicated web design programming In conclusion.

7. Conclusion

The overall module content, including various assessments and self-assessment results,
demonstrates my personal and professional capacity, including both strengths and weaknesses. It
also guided me to improve and sharpen those capabilities in terms of leadership and
management. I was able to apply my theoretical knowledge of leadership to practical scenarios
and critical analysis of various leadership situations.

The first segment focuses on identifying personal and professional abilities. In addition, the
section informs me of the talents I need to improve in order to succeed in leadership.

The second portion evaluated my team potential, and according to the Belbin questionnaire, I am
a competent coordinator and team worker. For future advances, I've prepared a SMART action
plan to help me stay focused on improving my weak areas. It's a specific activity plan to develop
my skills, which I've recognized as areas in which I need to improve.

In the third task, I realized the significance of networking with professionals. Accessing
important information, studying various topics, connecting with large profiles, and analyzing
their behavior patterns all helped me a lot in this section. Also, I've learned that LinkedIn is a
professional networking site where I may connect with people from various sectors.

It's also a live bio of myself, with my educational credentials, work experience, and other
recommendations. It will assist me in furthering my career, and as a healthcare professional I
will be able to demonstrate my potential and originality to businesses who seek to recruit me in
the future via my LinkedIn profile.

The fourth portion is dedicated to assessing my leadership ability. For this, I used Northouse
questionaries and analyzed the findings. The outcomes demonstrate my leadership style,
characteristics, talents, and behaviors. In that section, I mentioned that I have strong leadership
qualities, excellent interpersonal abilities, and a preference for relationship behaviors. Employers
interested in hiring me in the future can view my LinkedIn profile. In addition, I've realized that
one of my leadership traits is transformational leadership. In addition, I conducted a critical
incident analysis to assess my leadership potential based on key incidents I have encountered.
That approach enabled me to look at things from several perspectives. Personal branding is
discussed in the final section of the portfolio. As a healthcare professional, I need to project a
68

clear, strong, and persuasive public image, and I've learned how important personal branding is
for my professional success in this segment. For this reason, I developed a personal website
through which anyone can contact me via the internet.

To summarize the portfolio, the report can be defined as a very effective practical approach to
learning about oneself, reflecting one's strengths and weaknesses, providing opportunities to see
things from different perspectives, and developing one's career as a successful professional
brand. The “Developing effectiveness in management and leadership” is an attractive and
recommended subject topic for young leaders, and it is better to have it in this LMU MBA
program.
