1 Introduction
1.1 Contents and target group
This document serves for planning, preparing and performing the
installation of products which are based on SIDEXIS XG (X-ray and
video). It also helps the service engineer in troubleshooting.
It provides the necessary information for installation and initial
startup of a SIDEXIS-based solution to service personnel and
engineers.
However, the document can never be a substitute for other comple-
mentary documents describing on-site installation.
Due to the high scalability of the new networkable technology,
the complexity of the installation scenarios may vary considerably.
A complex network configuration requires another level of knowledge
than a simple standalone solution.
The simpler installation scenarios for standalone workstations are
therefore described in the following document:
„ German = "SIDEXIS XG Installationsanleitung"
Order No.: 5967349
„ English = "SIDEXIS XG Installation Instructions"
Order No.: 5967356
„ French = "SIDEXIS XG Intructions d’installation"
Order No.: 5967364
„ Spanish = "SIDEXIS XG Instrucciones de instalación"
Order No.: 5967372
„ Italian = "SIDEXIS XG Intruzioni di installazione"
Order No.: 5967380
All other cases are described here.
Since not all possible configurations can be described in these
instructions, you must have expert knowledge in the field of network
technology for carrying out the network installation.
Individual details on network technology can be looked up in the glos-
sary. For further information or introductions to the topic of network
technology please refer to the relevant literature available in book-
shops.

Make sure to observe the relevant safety regulations when installing

the components. The corresponding instructions provided in the sup-
plied documents, installation instructions and operating instructions
must be complied with.

1.3 Prerequisites for the installation of a

multistation SIDEXIS system

i
Since November 2004, many new networkable X-ray components de-
livered by SIRONA have been equipped with a network fiber optic con-
nection. A media converter converts the transfer signals of the glass fi-
bers and provides an RJ 45 network connection for operation in the
Sidexis network.

The following facts must be given before installation of the SIDEXIS

system:
„ Physical cabling to the connection points used for installation must
already be installed. Cabling must comply with basic standard
ISO/IEC 11801, which is applicable worldwide, or with European
standard EN 50173 or North American standard EIA/TIA 568 A,
which are derived from it.
„ The connections for the X-ray components are designed as RJ-45
or SC duplex connectors.
„ Between the computer and the networkable X-ray components to
be configured, there are no "intelligent" network components,
such as gateways or switches, which could interfere with the con-
figuration.
The networkable X-ray components should be configured if possi-
ble from a computer located in the immediate vicinity.

59 67 406 D 3407
D 3407.070.01.03.02 11.2008 9
„ The operating system is already installed on the computer.
„ The computer is set up for network operation including
TCP/IP protocol and addresses.
„ The IP addresses or address ranges, including subnet mask, that
must be used for the networkable X-ray components are known.
„ All computers access the same SIDEXIS database.

Notes on building installation/ The smooth and qualitative operation of a local area network requires
network cabling uncompromising conformity of the building electrical installation with
the internationally applicable basic standard ISO/IEC 11801 or with
the European standard EN 50173 or the North American standard
EIA/TIA 568 A which are derived from this basic standard. At the
same time, the network connections of the Sirona X-ray components
also must be observed.

i
Only the ORTHOPHOS XGPlus DS, ORTHOPHOS 5 DS,
ORTHOPHOS XG 3 DS and a version of the SIDEXIS intraoral wall
box (since November 2004) have an SC fiber optic connection.

1.3.1 RJ 45
„ Every networkable X-ray component provides an RJ 45 network
connection either directly or via a media converter.
Transmission takes place with 10BaseT or 100BaseTx using the
TCP/IP protocol.

i
Since November 2004, all new networkable X-ray components deliv-
ered by SIRONA have been equipped with a network fiber optic con-
nection. A media converter converts the transfer signals of the glass fi-
bers and provides an RJ 45 network connection for operation in the
Sidexis network.

„ Category 5 STP cables are used as network cables.

„ PCs operated with SIDEXIS are optimally prepared if the Ethernet
network cards and the local area network are equipped with the
standard specified above.
„ The plug-in card is installed as specified by the manufacturer.

1.3.2 Fiber optic connection
„ Since November 2004, many new networkable X-ray components
delivered by SIRONA have been equipped with a network fiber op-
tic connection.
„ Transmission takes place via 100BaseFx for multi-mode fiber us-
ing the TCP/IP protocol.
„ A media converter for RJ45 conversion and a matching patch ca-
ble are attached to all networkable X-ray components with a fiber
optic connection.
„ ORTHOPHOS XGPlus DS/Ceph
ORTHOPHOS XG 5 DS/Ceph
ORTHOPHOS XG 3 DS
The ORTHOPHOS XG line features a multimode duplex fiber optic
connection for SC duplex connectors.
„ SIDEXIS intraoral wall box (since November 2004):
Since November 2004, a version of the SIDEXIS intraoral wall box
features a multimode duplex fiber optic connection for MTRJ con-
nectors.
One MTRJ and one SC duplex connector are attached to the sup-
plied patch cable.
„ Multimode duplex 50/125 µm fiber optic cables are used as net-
work cables.

2 Installation and initial startup of the
X-ray components
i
The service password is required for the following installation scenar-
ios. This is described in the section "Service password" on page 39.

General information Via the network, the addressable X-ray component can be activated
for X-ray image acquisition by any of the PCs connected to the net-
work.

Management system The program SIXABCon - "Configuration of the X-ray components" is

used to manage networkable X-ray components.
It can be executed on any PC in the network, on which SIDEXIS XG
has been installed.

2.1 Installation

2.1.1 Factory setting

The following addresses are set as default addresses upon delivery
of the X-ray units.

Device type TCP/IP address

X-ray box 192.168.15.100

(Subnet-Mask: 255.255.255.0)

ORTHOPHOS (XAB) 192.168.15.200

(Subnet-Mask: 255.255.255.0)

ORTHOPHOS XGPlus DS/Ceph 192.168.15.240

ORTHOPHOS XG 5 DS/Ceph (Subnet-Mask: 255.255.255.0)
ORTHOPHOS XG 3 DS

GALILEOS 192.168.15.240
(Subnet-Mask: 255.255.255.0)

2.1.2 Guidelines for TCP/IP address assignment

An IP address may never occur more than once in the network!

In order to avoid IP address conflicts, you should never operate sever-

al networkable X-ray components in the network using the same
IP address!

59 67 406 D 3407
D 3407.070.01.03.02 11.2008 13
Each X-ray component needs to be assigned a unique IP address!

2.1.3 Checking the existing IP addresses

Explanation To find out whether a certain IP address already exists in the network,
you can enter the PING function at the input prompt (DOS window).

Check 1. Switch on all network devices (computers, printers, X-ray compo-

nents) which are being operated in the network.
2. Invoke the input prompt (DOS window) from a network computer.
3. At the input prompt, enter "ping" followed by the address to be
checked and then press the Enter key.
Example: "ping 192.168.15.13"
If a network device responds, then this address has already been
assigned.

Example (German language

operating system)

2.2 Configuration (boot service)

Explanation "Boot service" here refers to an initial IP address assignment. In the
case of the X-ray components, this process is triggered by the pro-
gram "Configuration of the X-ray components" when you press the
"New component" button.

Validity The X-ray component to be configured must be located in the same

physical network segment as the computer from which the boot ser-
vice is started. This means that no active components such as a gate-
way may be installed between the computer and the X-ray compo-
nent.

59 67 406 D 3407
14 D 3407.070.01.03.02 11.2008
The computer must be located in the same logical network segment
(subnet) of the desired target address of the X-ray component.

An X-ray component to which an address has been assigned already

can no longer be configured using the “boot service”,
“Add component” button. For information on how to change the ad-
dress, see section "Changing IP addresses" on page 18.

If you do not remember the IP address of a networkable X-ray compo-

nent, or if it is no longer available in the configuration database, you
can reset the component to its factory setting on delivery. The proce-
dure is described in the Appendix.

Activation 1. Switch all networkable X-ray components off.

2. Start the program "Configuration of the X-ray components" via
start - programs - SIDEXIS - SIDEXIS Manager.
3. Select the Attributes tab.

Selection There are two ways to select a new component:

„ Version 1
1. Select the required component from the "Name" pull-down
menu (example screen = ORTHOPHOS XG).
2. Click the "Add component" button.
A password dialog box may open:
Enter the SIDEXIS password here and click the "OK" button.

„ Version 2
Select "Add component" in the "Name" pull-down menu under the
desired component (example screen = ORTHOPHOS XG).
A password dialog box may open:
Enter the SIDEXIS password here and click the "OK" button.

Boot service The following dialog box appears:

59 67 406 D 3407
D 3407.070.01.03.02 11.2008 15
1. Switch the new X-ray component on.
The previously displayed dialog box is closed automatically.
The "Configuration" dialog box then opens.
The new component is displayed along with its Ethernet address
under the name "New X-ray component".
Example screen:

i
Depending on the device type, further configuration parameters may
be present!

Setting takeover 2. The IP address, subnet mask and standard gateway boxes should
be checked and edited if necessary.

59 67 406 D 3407
16 D 3407.070.01.03.02 11.2008
i
Any changes in the IP address, subnet mask or standard gateway
must be entered in decimal values and without leading zeros!

3. Click the ""OK"" button.

The values entered are now transferred to the X-ray component,
which then automatically reconfigures itself.
After the new addresses of the X-ray component have been set and
verified, the following dialog box appears (this does not apply to
ORTHOPHOS XG and GALILEOS):

4. Switch the new X-ray component off.

After switching off a networkable, ORTHOPHOS, an ORTHOPHOS XG

or a GALILEOS you must wait approx. 60s before switching it on again.
After you have switched off other X-ray components, you must wait ap-
prox. 5s before switching them on again. The X-ray component must be
switched off and back on to ensure that it still functions properly with the
new addresses following a restart.

2.3 User-defined configuration

Explanation As an alternative to the “boot service” (see page 14), a user-defined
configuration for already configured X-ray components (IP address
already set) is available.
The same configuration prerequisites apply as for “boot service”.

Registering X-ray components 1. Press the "Add component" button in the "Attributes" tab.
2. Then press the “User-defined...” button in the dialog box.
3. Confirm that the X-ray components you want to configure are
ready for operation.
4. Answer the question whether you want the system to look for un-
registered X-ray components.

59 67 406 D 3407
D 3407.070.01.03.02 11.2008 17
„ If you choose “No”, the program will return to the "Attributes" tab
and you can directly enter the configuration data of a known X-ray
component, such as IP address, subnet mask and standard gate-
way.
„ If you choose “Yes”, the program will automatically look for unreg-
istered X-ray components in the network.
If several unregistered X-ray components are found, the IP addresses
of all X-ray components found are displayed.
Select the desired X-ray component and confirm by pressing the
“OK” button.
The "Attributes" tab is displayed with the configuration data of the
found X-ray component.
When you press the “Apply” button, the X-ray component is regis-
tered.

2.3.1 Changing the name of the X-ray component

Explanation After successful configuration of the “new component”, you should

give it a user-defined name.

Changing the name 1. Click the "Change Name..." button on the "Attributes" tab.

2. Enter the new name in the "Change name of the X-ray component"
dialog box (in this example "x-ray box1").
3. Close the dialog box by clicking the "OK"button.

2.3.2 Changing IP addresses

Explanation To change the IP addresses of an already configured networkable

X-ray component, perform the following steps.

Edit 1. Start the “Configuration of the X-ray components” program on a

workstation. (If possible, the computer should be near the X-ray
components to be configured. There should not be a gateway in
between.)
2. Select the "Attributes" tab.
3. Select the X-ray component whose address you want to change.

59 67 406 D 3407
18 D 3407.070.01.03.02 11.2008
4. Select the “IP address” box and change the value to the corre-
sponding target address.

i
If the target address is not in the same network segment, then the rout-
ing between both segments must work properly. If the computer and
the X-ray component are in the same physical segment (i.e., not de-
coupled by a bridge), you can achieve this by specifying the IP ad-
dress of the computer from which the configuration is performed as
gateway under TCP/IP network settings on the configuration computer
at the time of configuration.

5. Now press the “Apply” button.

The X-ray component is then reconfigured.
A message box informs you about successful completion.

2.4 Functional test (test image)

Explanation The configuration program features a functional test.
This test constitutes an exposure simulation. During the test, a test
image is requested from the currently selected X-ray component.

The functional test is a mere simulation. No radiation is released.

Proper functioning of the X-ray component is checked with the func-

tional test, which can be repeated at any time using the "Functional
test" button on the "Settings" tab.

Validity This does not apply to devices in the ORTHOPHOS XG line or

GALILEOS.

Activation 1. Switch on the networkable X-ray component to be tested.

2. Start the program "Configuration of the X-ray components" via
start - programs - SIDEXIS - SIDEXIS Manager.
3. Select the Attributes tab.
4. Click the "Functional test" button.
The exposure window opens.
If the X-ray component is properly configured, a test image is then
transferred.

59 67 406 D 3407
D 3407.070.01.03.02 11.2008 19
Display

If desired, you can display the test image using the standard TIF
viewer.
The figure on the left shows an enlarged detail of the test image.

2.5 Check
Checking the physical connection In order to check the physical connection, the PC must be connected
(link) to the networkable X-ray component via the network cables. This can
be done either via a network structure (e.g. a switch) or directly.
There are two ways to do this:
„ RJ45
If the RJ45 connectors of the PC and of the media converter of the
networkable X-ray component are used, the connection is made
with STP cables.
„ Fiber optic connection
If the SC duplex connector of the PC and the existing fiber optic
connection of the networkable X-ray component are used, then
the connection is made with suitable fiber-optic cables. The sup-
plied patch cable should be used for this purpose.

Nearly all switches have an LED, in most cases labeled "Link", which
signals that the physical connection to each device which is connected
and switched on is properly established. Many computer network
cards also have such an LED. If no "Link" exists, the cabling and the
network configuration (network card controller) of the computer should
be checked.

59 67 406 D 3407
20 D 3407.070.01.03.02 11.2008
Checking the logical connection Before starting the configuration of the X-ray components, check
(TCP/IP stack) whether the network is properly installed on the computer involved
and that the desired IP address and subnet mask are set for the com-
puter.
1. Switch on the computer.
2. Switch on the X-ray component in its factory settings.
You can check the network connection between the X-ray component
and the PC by running the ping function. This function can be exe-
cuted via the Windows input prompt.
Following successful configuration of the network, you should be able
to send a ping to the local computer as well as to another computer or
to a connected X-ray component.
Example:
„ "ping 192.168.15.10" (own IP address)
„ "ping 192.168.15.100" X-ray box with factory settings
„ "ping 192.168.15.200" ORTHOPHOS DS (XAB) with factory set-
tings
„ "ping 192.168.15.240" ORTHOPHOS XGPlus DS/Ceph and
ORTHOPHOS XG 5 DS/Ceph with factory settings

2.6 Release
General information Via the network, the now addressable X-ray component can be acti-
vated for X-ray image acquisition by any of the PCs connected to the
network. SIDEXIS XG must be installed on these computers.
Using the program "SIXABCon - Configuration of the X-ray
components", the X-ray box can be approved or disabled for individ-
ual workstations.
The program "SIXABCon - Configuration of the X-ray components"
can be executed from any computer located in the network.
After release, the components can be addressed by the workstations.

2.7 Settings for a connected external network
Prerequisites If there is an existing external network which also uses TCP/IP proto-
cols, you must observe some additional points.
„ The network segment and IP addresses to be used should be as-
signed by the network administrator/Admin.
„ If existing computers are to be used for SIDEXIS as well, you must
usually set up the new components for this network segment.
„ If an automatic IP address assignment such as DHCP exists, you
must explicitly exclude the IP addresses you want to use for the
X-ray components.
„ The load on the external network should not be at the capacity
limit, since errors may occur in this case.
„ The principles of TCP/IP addresses are explained here once
again to demonstrate which TCP/IP configurations can be used
with an external network.

Network classes Network classes have been introduced as a standard for assigning
TCP/IP addresses. A distinction is made between class A, B and C.
The following table shows the characteristics of these network
classes:

Network class 1st byte Subnet mask

A 1-126 255.0.0.0

B 128-191 255.255.0.0

C 192-223 255.255.255.0
(192 reserved for private net-
works)

The “subnet mask” is used for masking out bits. This means that zero
values cause the other values to become zero, too. As a conse-
quence, the number of addresses that can be assigned within one
segment is limited.
Since it is also possible to interconnect several networks, a related
part of the network is designated as network segment (e.g. all com-
puters with the TCP/IP address 124 as 1st byte in a class A network).
Usually a class C network is used for TCP/IP addresses in an in-
house network. If more than 254 devices have to be addressed, it is
necessary to use a class B or class A network.
A TCP/IP address consists of two parts: The address itself and a
mask which classifies the network. These parts in turn consist of four
numbers between 0 and 255.

59 67 406 D 3407
D 3407.070.01.03.02 11.2008 25
You must configure all networkable X-ray components and SIDEXIS
workstations that are located in the same network segment. This
means that all computers and networkable X-ray components must
receive the value “255.255.255.0” as subnet mask entry in a class C
network. Therefore, the number of devices in a class C network is lim-
ited to 254.
The network segment itself must also be known for a complete
assignment of TCP/IP addresses. In a class C network, these are the
first three numbers of the TCP/IP address (colored gray). The fourth
number (colored white) represents the device number within the net-
work segment.

192 168 15 10

Network segment Device No.

Example In the following example, we discuss how to start up an X-ray box in

a B class network, analogous to the example in the chapter on multi-
station installation/IP address assignment.
The configuration procedure corresponds to the “multistation installa-
tion” example. The differences will be mentioned explicitly.
The following environments are assumed as an example:
„ An external network with 2 computers on which SIDEXIS XG is in-
stalled already exists.
„ The TCP/IP addresses of the computers are in B segment
129.170.X.X, the subnet mask is 255.255.0.0.
„ The SIDEXIS computers are already configured to the addresses
129.170.15.10 and 129.170.15.11.
„ The addresses 129.170.15.100 to 129.170.15.120 may be used
for the X-ray components after consultation with the responsible
network administrator.

Actions:

1. Start the “Configuration of the X-ray components” program on one

of the SIDEXIS computers. (If possible, the computer should be
near the X-ray components to be configured. There must not be a
gateway in between.)
2. Select the "Attributes" tab and click the “Add component” button.
3. After the component has reported, enter the IP addresses
129.170.15.100 and the subnet mask 255.255.0.0. You can use
129.170.15.1 as gateway address or enter the known gateway ad-
dress of the segment.
4. Press the “Apply” button.

3.2 Software update of the networkable X-ray
components (XAB only!)

The software update for ORTHOPHOS XG devices is described in the

corresponding service manuals!

Explanation You can update the complete basic software of the networkable X-ray
components without opening their housings or replacing any parts.
The update is carried out with a computer and the “Configuration of
the X-ray components” program.

You should not perform a software update without a substantial rea-

son. The user is prompted by the system to perform a software update
in the case of new units or SIDEXIS versions which are no longer com-
patible.

Determining the software version See section "Querying information about the X-ray component
(“Details” function)" on page 29.

Example

59 67 406 D 3407
D 3407.070.01.03.02 11.2008 31
In our case, this is basic software version 1.10

Update files There are two types of update files. They can be distinguished by their
file extensions.

Watch out for the end of the file! A file mix-up can lead to inoperability
of the updated hardware component.

File Meaning
extension
".out" “Software files” for updating the software of the
XAB boards.
".hex" “EDC firmware files” for updating the software of the
ORTHOPHOS image receptors.

Selecting the update 1. Start the program "Configuration of the X-ray components".

networkable X-ray component over the network.
The software is transferred to the X-ray component.

59 67 406 D 3407
D 3407.070.01.03.02 11.2008 33
Never switch off the X-ray component or the computer while a software
update1 is running. In the worst case, the X-ray component may no
longer work and may have to be returned to us.

Example screen (English)

Completion Depending on the device type, the following system message (or a
similar message) is displayed after a successful software update:
„ X-ray box
„The software update of the X-ray component was performed suc-
cessfully.
When the green 'on' light of the X-ray component flashes, switch
the external X-ray component off or restart (mechanically) the
computer with the built-in internal X-ray component, respectively.
Afterwards the new software version is active.“
„ ORTHOPHOS (Not ORTHOPHOS XG)
„The software update of the X-ray component has been success-
fully completed.
If the LEDs above the patient symbols are flashing, switch the net-
work-compatible Orthophos off and on again to activate the new
software version.“
Once the green ready LED of the X-ray component starts flashing, the
software update has been completed successfully.
7. Now you must switch the component off and then back on.

1. During the software update of an X-ray box, all three signal LEDs light up during
data transfer. After programming is complete, the green signal LED flashes
Ö see “System states of the X-ray box” on the following pages.

3.3 System states of the X-ray box
Explanation Below you will find a description of the operating states of the external
X-ray box or of the internal X-ray box (computer slide-in module).
The three signal LEDs of the X-ray box are used for indicating the sig-
nal states.

3.3.1 Normal operating states

Boot service/original settings on

delivery

After the self-test, the X-ray component goes to the boot service if no
IP address has yet been assigned to it. This is indicated by the green
signal LED lighting up and alternate flashing of the yellow sensor
LEDs. If no communication to the configuration program of the X-ray
component is established in this phase, then the component goes into
the ready state after approx. 10s with its default IP address (plug-and-
play mode – see section "Configuration (boot service)" on page 14).

Operational readiness

The green signal LED lights up.

No sensor plugged in during

operational readiness

The green signal LED lights up, the two yellow sensor LEDs flash
simultaneously.
This state also occurs if the plugged-in sensor is not registered for the
selected resolution.

Sensor recognition/initialization

or

If a sensor is detected, then the corresponding yellow signal LED

flashes until sensor initialization is complete (this takes approx. 5 s).

59 67 406 D 3407
D 3407.070.01.03.02 11.2008 35
or

After initialization of the plugged-in sensor the corresponding signal

LED lights up.
The system is now ready for exposure.

Exposure processing

or

1. After exposure the image is read by the sensor and transferred to

the SIDEXIS database. During image transfer the green signal
LED and the yellow signal LED of the corresponding sensor flash
slowly alternately.
2. Once the image has been transferred, the X-ray box automatically
switches to a preselected state. This preselection is made in
SIDEXIS.

- Upon preselecting "Single exposure" the X-ray box switches to

the "Ready" state.

or

- If “Multiple exposure” or “Status exposure” has been preselect-

ed, then the X-ray box switches to readiness.

3.3.2 Software update

While the new software transferred to the X-ray component, all three
LEDs light up.

Never switch off the X-ray box while it is in this state.

59 67 406 D 3407
36 D 3407.070.01.03.02 11.2008
When the software update has been completed, only the green signal
LED flashes. Now the device must be switched off and on again.

3.3.3 System error messages

Irregular flashing of the green signal LED indicates a system error.

(The LED flashes with a pulse/pause ratio of approx. 200 ms in this
case; after N cycles a pause of approx. 1.5 s follows.)
In this case please contact the Sirona Customer Service Center (CSC).

4.2 Service password

Explanation Some actions within the SIDEXIS software (acceptance test, different
configuration dialog boxes) require a service password to prevent
manipulation by the user.

The password should always be treated confidentially. Before entering

the password, you should find out the date as inconspicuously as pos-
sible.

Structure The password consists of four numbers.

It changes daily and is generated from the system date of the com-
puter according to the following pattern:

59 67 406 D 3407
D 3407.070.01.03.02 11.2008 39
Date = D1 D2 . M1 M2 . YYYY

Password = M2 M1 D2 D1

Date Digits

D1 1. digit of the current day

D2 2. digit of the current day

M1 1. digit of the current month

M2 2. digit of the current month

Password = M2 M1 D2 D1

i
Since the password is always valid for one single day only, it can be
passed on to the user in exceptional cases, e.g. to provide instant tele-
phone support.

Example The password for the date 05/24/1999 is 5042

Problem entering password If the commands are not enabled despite correct entry of the pass-
word, you should check the system date of the computer.

4.3 System setup

The SIDEXIS software is basically configured using the command
System setup... in the Utilities menu. From there you can access
the different configuration areas.

4.5.2 General information on ODBC databases:

Access to the ODBC database from SIDEXIS accesses the ODBC database using a symbolic name
SIDEXIS (a synonym) for this database.
Its default name is:
„ "PDATA_SQLEXPRESS" for an ODBC SQL database
„ "PDATA" for an ODBC Access database
This ODBC database name can be displayed via the SIDEXIS Info
window (See section "SIDEXIS Info window" on page 39.).

Setup An example for a setup of an ODBC SQL database is described in

chapter "Appendix D: Manual connection of an SQL database" in sec-
tion "Master installation" on page 105.

Explanation The SIDEXIS Manager provides you with a selection of tools available
for the administration of your SIDEXIS installation. The number of
icons displayed in the SIDEXIS Manager varies according to the com-
ponents installed.

Activation „ Start the SIDEXIS Manager via "start - programs - SIDEXIS -

5.1 Configuration of the X-ray components

(SiXABCon.exe)
See the following chapter:
„ "Installation and initial startup of the X-ray components" (page 13)
„ "Configuration of the X-ray components" (page 29)

5.2 Rescue program (SiRescue.exe)

Explanation In case of unexpected network errors, there may be problems with
image transfer from the X-ray component to SIDEXIS.

59 67 406 D 3407
D 3407.070.01.03.02 11.2008 51
In this case the system closes the connection after a while (? Time-
out settings) and enters the so-called Rescue state. This means that
the image is not lost, but is kept in the RAM of the X-ray component
by a safety mechanism until it is retrieved by the SiRescue rescue pro-
gram. A further exposure with this X-ray box is blocked until this
moment.

The X-ray component must not be switched off dur-

ing the rescue state (fast alternate flashing of the
sensor and ready LED).
If the box is switched off, the image is lost and the
X-ray component will be ready for operation after
the next power on.

Not for GALILEOS Exposures!

The rescue program SiRescue does not work with
GALILEOS exposures.
In the event of difficulties transferring images with
GALILEOS Exposures, use SIRONA CONTROL
ADMIN (Plug-in) to resolve the problem.
Please refer to the GALILEOS documentation.

Recommendation „ Create a link to the "SiRescue.exe" program in the start menu or

on the desktop.
„ Instruct the personnel as to the procedure to be used for a possi-
ble rescue state.

Retrieving the image The SiRescue program has an “interactive wizard” and is intuitive to
use.
1. Start the SiRescue program on any networked SIDEXIS
computer.
To locate this program, go to start - programs - SIDEXIS -
SIDEXIS Manager.
The program opens with a welcome screen.
2. Press the “Next” button.
The program tries to establish a connection to the X-ray component
which is in Rescue state.
If no X-ray component responds, you should check the network.
If the connection has been established successfully, the name of the
X-ray component is displayed.
3. Press the “Next” button.
The image is retrieved and processed.
The name of the patient is displayed, and the program proposes a
storage location for the retrieved image.

59 67 406 D 3407

i
If necessary change the folder.

4. Remember the patient name, image name and location.

5. Press the “Next” button.
If necessary change the folder.
The message that the image was saved successfully follows.
Information on the patient concerned and the storage location is
also provided.
6. Press the “Finish” button.
The image has now been saved to the chosen folder.
The program terminates automatically.

To make the image visible in SIDEXIS, it must be im-

ported and assigned to the respective patient.

Importing the image 1. Start SIDEXIS XG.

2. Register the patient concerned.
3. Import the image.
Once it has been successfully imported, the image can be deleted
from the import folder, as it is now stored in the SIDEXIS database.

(NGStationMgr.exe)
Explanation The "SIDEXIS Station Manager (NGStationMgr) utility program can
be used to make the following settings of the individual SIDEXIS sta-
tions:
„ Data paths
- Image data path
- SIDEXIS master station only: Master data path
„ Change of SIDEXIS master station

Operation An example for operation is described in the section "Subsequent

relocation of the PDATA image data directory" on page 97.

5.5 Collecting log files (NGLogConnect)

Explanation The NGLogConnect utility program was developed for error analysis.
The utility program creates the "NGLogCollect.tar.gz" file, which col-
lects the most important log files of the SIDEXIS XG installation.
„ It helps the SIRONA Customer Service Center (to which it is e-
mailed) remedy any error which has occurred.
„ This file also can be used to back up the configuration.
- The file can be opened with suitable packing programs
(e.g. GZip; TUGZip).

i
In the default configuration, the files of a GALILEOS-RCU are also col-
lected (if one is installed).

Operation
i
Due to the access rights required, we recommend executing
NGLogConnect with administrator rights.

1. Complete the area entitled "For further response".

2. Check the destination directory of the "NGLogCollect.tar.gz" file in
the "Destination directory" text field.
Adapt this path if necessary.
3. Press the "Start" button.
The "NGLogCollect.tar.gz" file is created.

Configuration 5.6 Connecting SIDEXIS to an SQL Server

database (NGSQLConnect)
Explanation NGSQLConnect (NGSQLConnect.exe) can be used to enable
addressing of multiple databases on a single SIDEXIS station,
e.g. when using an X-ray unit in group practices.
NGSQLConnect is part of the SIDEXIS Manager.

i
Connection to another database does not enable the complete solu-
tion for group practices. Some bits of information, e.g. the SIDEXIS XG
e-mail configuration stored in the sidexis.ini file, are not changed.
Please note that networkable X-ray components must be set up and
administered separately if several different databases are used.

i
NGSQLConnect can be used e.g. to occasionally connect a laptop
(with its own database) to a practice network.

59 67 406 D 3407
D 3407.070.01.03.02 11.2008 55
Operation SIDEXIS must be restarted to activate the database change.
For automation, NGSQLConnect can be controlled via the following
command line parameters:

Command in the DOS window Meaning

> NGSQLConnect.exe /? Displays the About dialog (Info window) of
NGSQLConnect.
> NGSQLConnect.exe /DSN <data source name> Uses <data source name> as data source.
> NGSQLConnect.exe /s Execute NGSQLConnect without graphic user inter-
face.

Structure

(A) - Current database connection

(B) - Desired database connection

Tip Tip! Create batch files to start SIDEXIS with different databases, e.g.:
Start_SIDEXIS_with_Database_PDATA_SQLEXPRESS1.bat:
NGSQLConnect.exe /s /DSN PDATA_SQLEXPRESS1
start sidexis.exe
„ Adapt this batch file with the required DSN and save it to the
SIDEXIS directory.
„ SIDEXIS can then easily be started with a preselected database
by placing a short-cut icon linked to this batch file on the desktop.
„ Create a batch file for each database to be used.

6 Checking the USB X-ray box
6.1 Battery check with SiUSBMon
Explanation The Sidexis USB Monitor (“SiUSBMon.exe”) is a small tool which
allows you to read out the battery status of the USB X-ray box.

Activation When you click “Get battery status”, the current status of the battery
is retrieved and displayed.

i
The current battery status is not retrieved while the USB box is ready
for exposure.

6.2 Battery refresh with SiUSBMon
Explanation The Sidexis USB Monitor (“SiUSBMon.exe”) additionally offers the
possibility of performing a battery refresh cycle, i.e., the battery is
completely discharged and then recharged in a controlled way. During
normal practice operation, SIDEXIS suggests a refresh at regular
intervals (after a predefined amount of charge has been taken from
the battery, see entry “AccuRefreshLimitAs” in xab.ini). However,
if the user wants to perform an intentional refresh, this can be trig-
gered with SiUSBMon. A refresh makes sense whenever the battery
has been stored or seldom used for a certain period of time. A refresh
counter-acts the so-called memory effect, so that the battery retains
its full capacity.
A complete refresh cycle takes at least 6 hours.

Performing a refresh 1. Make sure that the USB X-ray box is connected to the PC,
and start SiUSBMon.
2. Click “Start refresh cycle” and answer the question “...Perform re-
fresh cycle now?” with “Yes”.
A new dialog box opens and informs you whether the battery is cur-
rently being discharged or charged and shows you the current cell
voltage.
3. Wait until the battery has been discharged completely and then re-
charged. Leave the computer switched on and SiUSBMon running
and do not take any exposures with SIDEXIS during this time.
Once the refresh cycle is complete, a corresponding message will
be displayed.
Although the refresh cycle can be stopped at any time, there are cer-
tain moments when this would not make much sense. When you inter-
rupt it at a cell voltage <= 1250 mV, the box cannot be brought into
the ready for exposure state immediately afterwards, or at least only
with restrictions. In any case the battery will be recharged as long as
you leave the PC switched on or use the external power supply unit,
even if you have interrupted the refresh cycle.

6.3 Use of the external power supply unit

Explanation If the USB X-ray box is in heavy use, it is recommended to use an
external power supply unit for operation.

i
It must be observed, however, that the power supply unit may not be
detected immediately after plugging in, so that the box continues to be
powered by the battery instead of the power supply unit.

Detection The power supply unit is detected at the following moments only:
„ When the box is initialized, i.e., when the computer is switched on
while the box is connected, or when the box is newly connected to
the USB port while the computer is switched on already.

59 67 406 D 3407
D 3407.070.01.03.02 11.2008 61
„ If the detected power supply unit is briefly unplugged (unintention-
ally) and is plugged in again within 20 seconds.
„ Every two hours.
Once you have connected the external power supply unit, unplug the
USB plug and plug it in again immediately afterwards. In this case the
USB X-ray box is re-initialized and the power supply unit is detected
at once.

7.1 Explanation
The system has a large number of error messages which give indica-
tions on the cause and correction of malfunctions. Usually you simply
need to follow the instructions provided by the system.
On the following pages you will find typical errors which can occur with
a new installation or during servicing. The errors have been classified
as follows:
„ General errors outside SIDEXIS or those causing no error mes-
sage in SIDEXIS.
- These errors are classified according to actions.
„ Errors which are handled by SIDEXIS with an error message.
- If the error is identified with a number, then you can refer directly
to the corresponding chapter for possible solutions.

Additional help If you cannot rectify the problem with these instructions, you should
keep the following information at hand when contacting the Hotline:
„ What malfunction has occurred?
„ What action led to the occurrence of the malfunction?
- Which device was being used when the malfunction occurred
and what serial number does it have?
„ Error messages from the SIDEXIS system.
- What is the error text and number?
„ Information on the system (See also section SIDEXIS Info win-
dow, on page 39).
- Which SIDEXIS version is installed?
- What expansion levels are installed? (intraoral, panoramic,
ceph, video, interfaces to practice management software/com-
munication partners)
„ Which computer hardware is used? (processor, RAM size, net-
work environment, if applicable, etc.)

Message Valid Causes and

versions Actions
1500 1.1 and This error may occur if the SIDEXIS program is already active and you try to start the soft-
higher ware a second time (i.e. twice). In this case no corrective actions are necessary. The user must
restrict himself/herself to working with one single active instance of the SIDEXIS program.
However, if SIDEXIS refuses to start already during the very first attempt and issues this mes-
sage, then you should consider reinstalling the software.
If SIDEXIS detects an already active program instance at the start, it will attempt to send it to
the foreground. If this is successful, then the error message discussed here is suppressed.
1501 1.1 and There were problems with generating the user interface of the software (windows, tools,
higher menus, etc.) during program start.
This is usually due to low RAM or Windows resources.
A wrong combination of the individual SIDEXIS program files can also lead to this error, since
older versions do not contain all interface elements required. (Ö SIDEXIS versions)
1502 1.1 and There were problems with loading the table of shortcut keys during program start. If the pro-
higher gram starts without difficulty afterwards, it is usually possible to work with the system without
restrictions (except for the shortcut keys).
This is usually due to low RAM or Windows resources.
A wrong combination of the individual SIDEXIS program files can also lead to this error, since
older versions do not contain all interface elements required. (Ö SIDEXIS versions)
1510 1.1 and In this case the software installation is corrupt.
higher This may be caused by simultaneously installed program files of different versions, or by invalid
entries in the Ö SIDEXIS INI files. If you cannot find any error when checking the INI files, then
you must reinstall the software to rectify the problem.
1511 1.1 and There were problems with reading the SIDEXIS INI files (Ö INI files). If you cannot find any
higher error when checking the INI files, then you must reinstall the software to rectify the problem.
1520 1.1 and During Ö parameterized start of SIDEXIS a wrong parameter line was handed over. This has
higher no influence on the further behavior of SIDEXIS. However, you should check the application
that starts the program.

1530 2.0 and The serial computer interface for the foot switch of the SIROCAM could not be configured
higher by the software. However, it is possible to continue working without the foot control.
The error may be caused either by the hardware or by the configuration of the software.
As for the hardware, you should check whether the connection between the camera and the
serial connection socket of the computer is correct. (Are all devices involved supplied with
power? Was the correct socket used? Does it help to completely switch the system off and
back on?)
As for the software, you should configure the interface (‘VICom’) properly. This can be carried
out using the respective configuration dialog within SIDEXIS. (Ö SIDEXIS configuration and
SIDEXIS INI files)
1590 1.0 to 1.1 This message is caused by an unexpected internal error. We cannot recommend any general
way to proceed. Possible solutions depend on the circumstances. You should report the error
to Sirona Dental Systems with a description of the action that caused the error.
1599 2.0 and An error occurred while accessing internal data structures. In this case exit and restart
higher SIDEXIS. If the error occurs repeatedly, then you must report it to Sirona Dental Systems with
a description of the action that caused it.
1600 1.1 and There is not enough free RAM for a certain action. If a large number of images or programs
higher are open simultaneously, then no further action is necessary. Simply restrict yourself to work-
ing with a few essential images or programs. If this does not lead to success, you must
increase the RAM size.
1601 1.1 and Due to insufficient RAM resources, image display is not possible or is incomplete. If a large
higher number of images or programs are open simultaneously, then no further action is necessary.
Simply restrict yourself to working with a few essential images or programs. If this does not
lead to success, you must increase the RAM size.
In version 1.1 this error occasionally caused the software to 'hang', whereby, after you have
acknowledged the error, SIDEXIS attempts to display the images again, which again leads to
this message, etc. In this case, the problem initially must be eliminated by aborting the pro-
gram or shutting down the computer before initiating a more exact examination of the problem.
1602 1.1 and This is an internal error in which unexpected data (so-called parameters) have emerged
higher within the software. We cannot recommend any general way to proceed. Possible solutions
depend on the circumstances. You should report the error to Sirona Dental Systems with a
description of the action that caused the error. Provided that it is possible to reproduce the
occurrence of the error, the action that caused the error should be avoided in the future in
order to prevent possible damage to the database.
1603 1.1 and Required program resources (e.g. menus, dialog boxes, buttons) could not be found.
higher The program interface can not be displayed fully subsequent to this type of message, or cer-
tain dialogs are not displayed. However, it is often possible to work with some restrictions.
This is usually due to a wrong combination of the individual SIDEXIS program files, since older
versions do not contain all resources required. In this case a new installation is usually recom-
mended. Low RAM resources can also lead to this error.
1604 1.1 and A dialog box cannot be opened. This is usually due to low RAM or Windows resources.
higher A wrong combination of the individual SIDEXIS program files can also lead to this error, since
older versions do not contain all interface elements required. In this case a new installation is
usually recommended.
1605 1.1 and There is not enough free disk space. In this case the user should relocate older images.
higher This message is issued if less than 10 MByte of free disk space are available on the database
drive. The SIDEXIS About dialog box shows how much free disk space is available for images.

1606 1.1 and Problems have occurred upon invoking an operating system function (usually hardware-
higher related). If there are sufficient RAM, disk space and system resources available, then there is
usually a wrong configuration of the operating system (DOS, Windows or Windows 95).
1607 5.5 and The selected ROI is too small. Please select a larger region.
higher
1610 1.1 and The maximum number of images that can be saved for the currently registered patient is
higher reached. To be able to save new images of this patient, you must delete some of the existing
images. Alternatively you can create a new data record for this patient. The name of the patient
must differ slightly from the existing entry (e.g. by appending a number). Since the number of
images that can be saved is very large, you should check whether there are any other causes
of this error.
1611 1.1 and No further images can be displayed since the number of images which can be displayed
higher simultaneously is limited (32 images max. for version 2.2 and higher, previously 20 images
max.). Simply close the images that you do not need at the moment. A list of all open images
can be displayed in the Window menu. This message cannot be suppressed by increasing the
RAM size.
1620 up to 1.1 Before certain actions (e.g. X-ray image acquisition), the software checks to make sure there
are sufficient resources (e.g. free disk space) available for this action. If it is not possible to
determine the free resources, then the action is rejected. The problem can usually be solved
by reducing the system load (e.g. by closing images and programs).
1630 1.1 and The magnifier or the viewport cannot be displayed. Except for that, working with the system
1631 higher should be possible without restrictions.
2.0 and
higher
1640 1.1 and A printout on one of the connected printers could not be started.
higher Check the involved hardware first. Is the corresponding printer switched on? Is it connected
through the correct cable to the correct connection of the computer? Has paper been inserted?
Clarify for the software: Is the printer registered in SIDEXIS? If the printer is addressed through
a Windows driver, is it properly installed and configured (printer installation)?
1650 1.1 and The requested view cannot be restored completely. The displayed view may therefore differ
higher from the saved view. The desired condition can be restored by means of the image processing
functions. If it is not possible to continue working with the view, then you have to use the origi-
nal view.
1660 2.2 and A new image cannot be saved to the database at the moment (e.g. because of a network
higher error). To avoid data loss, you should back up the displayed new image to another storage
medium with the Export function (e.g. floppy disk or local hard disk). Once the cause of the
problem has been eliminated (see further error messages of the system), you can re-assign
the exported images to the patient with the Import function. If this is not done, image data may
be lost.
1661 There were problems accessing a file.
The system may have been unable to access the configuration database of the X-ray compo-
nents.
Check the installation and the access rights.

1700 1.1 and A file of the database could not be opened, closed, read, written, generated, deleted or it was
1701 higher not possible to position in it.
1702 1.1 and First check whether access to other files (other patients and images) is possible. If this is not
1703 higher the case, then check whether basic access to the database is possible: Is the database stored
1704 1.1 and at the location specified in the system settings? Do the required reading and writing rights exist
1705 higher there? If the database is on a server, is the server switched on? Is the network connection in
1706 1.1 and order (check cables)? Do the necessary network rights exist (e.g. drive sharing and mapping in
higher the File Manager under Windows for Workgroups or Windows 95)?
1.1 and If, however, the problem occurs only with specific patients or images, then the related files
higher have probably been destroyed or deleted (by previous malfunctions or system interventions).
1.1 and It may be possible to retrieve these files from existing backup copies (backup).
higher
1.1 and
higher
1707 1.1 and The database does not accept any further patients. The maximum number of patients has
higher been reached. Up to version 2.2, you can solve the problem by creating a new database.
To create a new database, specify a new database folder with the command Ö Utilities,
System setup, Service. Installing a larger hard disk or increasing the RAM size has no effect.
1708 1.1 and The maximum number of images that can be saved for the currently registered patient is
higher reached. To be able to save new images of this patient, you must delete some of the existing
images. Alternatively you can create a new data record for this patient (Patient New).
The name of the patient must slightly differ from the existing entry (e.g. by appending a num-
ber). Installing a larger hard disk or increasing the RAM size has no effect.
1709 1.1 and No further views of the active image can be saved to the database. The maximum number of
higher views for this image has been reached. To be able to save new views of this image, you must
delete some of the existing views. Installing a larger hard disk or increasing the RAM size has
no effect.
1715 1.1 and There is not enough free disk space. In this case the user should relocate images. This mes-
higher sage is issued if less than 10 MByte of free disk space are available on the database drive.
The SIDEXIS About dialog box shows you how much free disk space is available for images.
1716 1.1 and The desired patient is already registered in the system. This can have three causes.
higher In most cases the patient is registered at another station in the network. Since a patient can
only be processed at one place at a time with the old database, you must wait with the registra-
tion until the patient has been logged off at the other station. This is a normal system state.
The patient may also have been registered at the requesting station. In this case a double
registration at the same station is avoided. This is also a normal system state.
If the patient is not registered at anystation in the network (check all stations thoroughly), then
he/she can be ‘released’ for processing in SIDEXIS with the command Utilities, Multistation
functions, Manage network registrations (Ö User Manual). This situation can result from past
network error, power failure or switching off the computer when a patient is still registered in
the system.
1717 1.1 and This message occurs if you attempt to log off a patient who is already logged off in the
higher system or not registered. This state may be caused e.g. by incorrect use of the command
Utilities, Multistation functions, Manage network registrations. In this case you should exit
SIDEXIS. Messages pertaining to possible data losses are to be ignored. You can continue
working as usual after restarting SIDEXIS.
1718 1.1 and No further patients can be registered in the system. The maximum number of patients who
higher. can be registered in the system has been reached (20 patients for the old database).
You should log off any patients who are no longer needed. Possibly existing ‘wrong’ registra-
tions can be removed with the command Utilities, Multistation functions, Manage network
registrations (after thoroughly checking all stations). (Ö User Manual)
1719 1.1 and The requested patient has been deleted from the system. It may be possible to retrieve the
higher data from backup copies.
1720 1.1 and The requested patient is not known in the system. He/She may have been deleted during an
higher earlier session.

1723 1.1 and The requested image view has been deleted from the system. It may be possible to retrieve
higher the data from backup copies. However, since this requires considerable effort, it is recom-
mended to recreate the desired view from the original instead, if possible.
1724 1.1 and The requested image view is not known in the system. It may have been deleted during an
higher earlier session. It is recommended to recreate the desired view on the basis of the original.
1725 2.0 and Access to one or several files of the database was refused or was not at all possible. In this
1726 higher case you should check the database access: Is the database stored at the location specified in
2.0 and the system settings? Does the specified path exist completely? Do the required reading and
higher writing rights exist there? If the database is on a server, is the server switched on? Is the net-
work connection in order (check cables)? Do the necessary network rights exist (e.g. drive
sharing and mapping in the File Manager under Windows for Workgroups or Windows 95)?
1727 A program switch was not possible.
This error can occur when the program interacts with a practice management system or
another external interface.
Check the partner settings in the Service dialog box, especially the name and path of the
software.
1728 The image has been relocated.
The desired image is no longer available in the database but was relocated to another storage
medium (MO).
The required data can be returned to the database again when you have inserted the storage
medium after having been prompted to do so.
1799 1.1 and An unexpected database error has occurred. Possible solutions depend on the circum-
higher stances. You should report the error to Sirona Dental Systems with a description of the action
that caused the error.
1800 1.1 and There were problems accessing the X-ray acquisition cards. The card could not be
1801 higher addressed or is not or not properly configured (Ö installation of the cards). It is possible that
1802 1.1 and the option for the respective X-ray exposures was activated in the Ö control panel, without the

higher
1803 1.1 and The image acquisition card cannot be initialized or configured. There were problems during
higher download of the card software. (See also errors 1800, 1801, 1802)
1804 1.1 and There were problems while reading the sensor configuration. Reinstall the connected sen-
higher sor.
1805 1.1 and The image acquisition card software cannot be initialized. Please check that the software
higher has been installed properly.
1806 1.1 and No sensor is connected. You may have to tighten the screws of the sensor plug (does not apply
higher for connection on the front).
1807 1.1 and The sensor has been successfully replaced or newly installed. No further action is necessary.
higher
1810 1.1 and The image acquisition card is already used by another software. Make sure that only a sin-
higher gle software is active for X-ray acquisition (SIDEXIS must be started only once, too). If this
message occurs although this is the case, restarting the system usually helps.
1811 1.1 and Please check whether a sensor is connected and whether its connection to the image
higher acquisition card is correct. You may have to tighten the screws of the sensor plug (does not
apply for connection on the front).

1812 1.1 and The sensor had to be initialized with default values. This can lead to a loss of image quality.
higher Perform an installation for this sensor with the related floppy disk (check the sensor number).
If this does not lead to success, check whether the installation disk contains a file with the
name of the sensor number of the respective sensor and the extension SGF
(e.g. 14_01005.SGF). If you cannot get rid of this message, you should replace the sensor as
soon as possible.
It is possible to take exposures even if the sensor file is missing (not with IOII), but a lower
quality must be reckoned with. To do this, all messages must be acknowledged correspond-
ingly in SIDEXIS. For exposures with the ORTHOPHOS DS, the message E 412 also appears
on the multitimer. You can nevertheless take the exposure after pressing the R key and the
X-ray button.
1813 1.1 and The connected sensor is outside the permissible specification (low quality). Replace the
higher sensor.
1814 1.1 and The sensor file for this sensor cannot be read. Reinstall this sensor.
higher
1899 1.1 and An undefined error in the X-ray acquisition card software occurred. This can be due both
higher to defective hardware and to wrong software configurations.
Software: Check the settings in the function Utilities, System setup, Service.
Hardware: The cause can be a short circuit in the cable of the video printer, a defective image
acquisition card or a defective sensor. The components are to be checked individually and
replaced if necessary.
1908 1.1 and An image processing error has occurred.
higher „ The RAM resources may be low. If there is sufficient RAM, you should not repeat the action
performed on this image. Except for that, working with the system should be possible with-
out restrictions.
„ It was attempted to open an image view in an old SIDEXIS version which had been saved
with SIDEXIS XG and cannot be reproduced by the older SIDEXIS version. Original views
can be opened at any time with older SIDEXIS versions.
1920 1.1 and There was an unexpected error in the system setup. If the error occurs repeatedly, then you
higher must report it to Sirona Dental Systems with a description of the action that caused it.
1941 2.0 and It was attempted to start a dialog box related to the video system (frame grabber), which does
higher not exist. Since different cards can be used for the video functionality in principle, the installed
video card possibly does not support this dialog box.
1942 2.0 and The attempt to retrieve the still image from the video card has failed. If this problem persists

higher SIDEXIS remembers the last device used for acquiring an image and displays this device as
default.
The unit was probably removed from the configuration database in the meantime, or the
approval for this computer was withdrawn.
If this error occurs only once, or if it does no longer occur after an exposure with another unit,
then you can ignore it.
3058 5.2 and General error in the SiXABCtl module.
higher The error could not be specified in more detail.
Possible solutions depend on the circumstances. You should report the error to Sirona Dental
Systems with a description of the action that caused the error.
3059 5.2 and Currently no X-ray components are registered on this computer.
higher There are no X-ray units connected directly to the computer, nor have any X-ray components
been approved for this computer.
If you want to address X-ray components with this computer, then an exposure source must
exist.
Check the approvals in the configuration program for X-ray components.
3060 5.2 and The X-ray component requires a software update.
higher It is attempted to make a connection with an X-ray component which has an incompatible, old
software level. You must perform a Ö software update for the X-ray component.
3061 5.2 and An (internal) timeout occurred during network communication.
3062 higher A timeout occurred during communication with the X-ray component. If an image has been
acquired already, the component directly enters the rescue state afterwards. (alternate flashing
of the LED, see states). Then you must retrieve the image with the help of the SiRescue pro-
gram.
If no image has been acquired, you can ignore the error message if it occurs only once.
If the error occurs frequently, then check the cabling and the network load. The error may also
be caused by other sources, such as badly configured computers in the network.
3063 5.2 and The acquired data are unusable.
higher This error occurs when the data (images) transferred by the X-ray component cannot be pro-
cessed correctly together with the settings or sensor correction data.
Check the configuration and the sensor correction data.
Does the error occur with every exposure?
Does the error also occur with other X-ray components and sensors?
After this error, the X-ray component is usually in the rescue state, and the image stored on it
can be retrieved with the help of the SiRescue program. If the error occurs also with SiRescue,
then the image can possibly be retrieved by another computer or after fixing the installation.
3065 5.2 and The configuration database of the X-ray component is missing or corrupt.
higher This error occurs if the system cannot access the configuration database (xab.ini).
Check the configuration, is the xab.ini file stored in the database path?

7.5 The internal error message file (log file)

Activation Keeping an error message file can be enabled with the command
Utilities, System setup in the “Service” area. Any errors as well as the
program start and end of SIDEXIS are logged in this file.
The storage location of this log file can also be set there. If the length
of the file exceeds a maximum value, then the oldest messages are
deleted from the beginning of the file. (On average the size of the log
file is sufficient for approx. 2 months.) The more recent messages are
thus always retained.
The file can be viewed with a standard text editor.

7.6 Deletion log of new database

Explanation Due to the referential integrity created by the database driver,
all images related to a patient are deleted when this patient is deleted.
When objects are deleted from a database, they are removed com-
pletely, i.e. apart from the gaps in the counter variables, there are no
traces of deleted objects left.
To simplify the work for the Hotline staff who could recur to deletion
notes in the patients.paf (patients) and *.pdf (images) files in the old
database, a separate deletion log is recorded by the SiFileDB.dll data-
base module of SIDEXIS. It can be replaced only by an extended
database server functionality, as provided e.g. by the SQL server. It is
disabled by the entry “LogDel=0” in sifiledb.ini, section [Location].

Structure The file “sidbdel.log” is written in the central PDATA folder in the fol-
lowing format:
1 line per entry.
Entry = date + time of the action – “Del” for deletion – patient name,
first name, date of birth, database ID – (only for image deletion: cre-
ation date + time, type, database ID, otherwise 0) – station name of
the executing SIDEXIS station.

8.1 Backup and restoration of the

SQL database (NGSQLBackup)
Explanation NGSQLBackup is a utility program which is used to back up or restore
a SIDEXIS SQL database running on an SQL server 2005.

Installation Copy the NGSQLBackup.exe file to a computer which has full access
to the SQL server.
„ The folder to which the file is copied must have write access.

Backup Manual

1. Start the "NGSQLBackup.exe" program.

2. Check and, if necessary, adapt the required settings, e.g.:
– SQL server name
– Data backup (target) directory
– Desired names of backup files

59 67 406 D 3407
D 3407.070.01.03.02 11.2008 89
3. Click the "Backup" button.
The backup dialog box opens.
The database server backs up the SQL database to the desired direc-
tory during operation.
4. When the backup has been completed, click the "OK" button.
The backup dialog box closes.

Automatic

After the first backup, a batch file named "SilentBackup.bat" is written

to the program folder.
If this batch file is started, a silent backup with the latest settings is
performed.
If you want, you can integrate this batch file into the Windows
Taskplanner for overnight backups.

i
We recommend performing a periodic backup of the PDATA\NGSQL-
Backup folder before running a backup of the PDATA folder.

Restoration
i
During a restoration, all existing data of the SQL server is overwritten
with the selected backup file!

i
No user may access the database during the restoration process!
Any existing connections to the database must be disconnected prior
to the restoration process. Following the restoration process,
SIDEXIS XG must be restarted on all affected PCs.

1. Start the "NGSQLBackup.exe" program.

59 67 406 D 3407
90 D 3407.070.01.03.02 11.2008
2. Select the desired settings.
3. Click the "Restore" button.
A password dialog box opens.
4. Enter the password in the text box.
5. Click the "OK" button.
The password dialog box closes and a progress dialog box opens.
The database restore process begins.
6. When the restoration process has been completed, click the "OK"
button.
The progress dialog box closes.

8.2 Renaming the host of the database server

(NGSQLRename)
Explanation NGSQLRename helps you to correctly rename a database server.
NGSQLRename can be downloaded from the VIP area of the website
http://www.sidexis.com.

i
Sirona recommends not renaming the database server in general
practice, since doing so would have far-reaching implications and
therefore requires exact planning.

Installation „ Copy the file NGSQLRename.exe to the database server.

Renaming 1. Log in to the database server.

2. Change the host name.
3. Reboot the database server.
4. Log in to the database server again.
5. Start the auxiliary program NGSQLRename.
The required settings are made.

8.3 Restore the database users and access

rights for the SIDEXIS SQL database
(NGSQLConfig)
Explanation The NGSQLConfig tool (NGSQLConfig.vbs) restores deleted or
altered database users (SXAdmin and SXUser) as well as the
required access rights to the SIDEXIS SQL database.

59 67 406 D 3407
D 3407.070.01.03.02 11.2008 91
i
NGSQLConfig is a tool for restoring damaged systems, and should
therefore be used only in emergency cases and with appropriate ad-
vance planning and safeguarding.

Download source NGSQLConfig is available for downloading in the VIP area of website
http://www.sidexis.com.

9 Appendix B: Resetting the X-ray
component to the factory setting
Explanation In its original state upon delivery, the X-ray component does not have
any IP address or default address assigned to it.
As long as the X-ray component has not received any address via the
boot service or by manually “changing the IP address”, it will go to the
boot service after power-on (see states of the X-ray components).
If no configuration partner responds, the X-ray component will boot
with its default address.
After the component has been configured, it has its own IP address.
It can no longer be addressed via the boot service. If the component
is no longer be available or its addresses are no longer known
because of a corrupt installation, you can restore its factory settings.
It can then once again be addressed through the boot service or plug-
and-play (see chapter "Installation and initial startup of the X-ray com-
ponents" on page 13).

10 Appendix C: Moving an
SQL database
10.1 General
Explanation The SIDEXIS data collection consists of image data and an SQL data-
base.
„ The image data and the SQL database can be relocated (image
data) or moved (SQL database) separately.

i
If the complete data collection, i.e. the SQL database and the image
data, is to be moved, the image data must be relocated first, and then
the SQL database must be moved.

10.2 Subsequent relocation of the PDATA

image data directory
Step 1: Relocation The following steps are required for relocation:
1. Close SIDEXIS on all stations.
2. Copy the PDATA image data directory to the new location.
3. Enable the new location of the PDATA image data directory.
4. Start the SIDEXIS Manager via "start - programs - SIDEXIS -
SIDEXIS Manager" on any SIDEXIS station.
5. Start the utility program "SIDEXIS Station Manager
(NGStationMgr)“.

Step 2: Change the image data path

i
The following steps must be performed for each SIDEXIS station in the
network.

1. Select the desired SIDEXIS station.

2. Click the "Change..." button.
3. Adapt the path in the "Image data path" text field.
4. For the SIDEXIS master station only: Adapt the master path in

Enter the password (C) = sirona

Adapting setup.ini 7. In order to ensure that future client installations run correctly, an
adaption of the setup.ini file in the central PDATA\Setup\SIDEXIS
directory is also required. In the PDATA image directory under
PDATA\Setup\Sidexis\setup.ini, modify the server name in the pa-
rameter COMBOSQL.

[CLIENT] activation=msiexec.exe /i Sidexis.msi … COMBOSQL=Server\PDATA_SQLEXPRESS …

Checking the function 8. Stop the "old" MS SQL Server 2005 Express and check the
access to the SQL database via Sidexis XG.
9. Test installation of a client in order to test correct access to the
setup.ini.

This document describes the proper procedure for manually connect-
ing a SIDEXIS XG system of version 1.6 or higher to an existing
SQL database server.
The existing SQL database server concerned must be an
SQL Server 2005 or an SQL Server 2000.

11.1.2 Prerequisites
„ The following steps must be performed as the administrator on the
computer with the local database.
„ The current user also must have administrative rights for the
SQL server to be configured.
„ Certain tools and files are required for manual connection of the
SQL database server.

11.1.3 Required tools and files

SSMSE tool The "SQL Server Management Studio Express" (SSMSE) tool must
be installed on the executing PC.
The procedure is performed using the free "SQL Server Management
Studio Express" (SSMSE) tool.
Both SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server 2000 can be accessed with
this tool.

13 Glossary This section contains explanations on the most common terms in net-
work technology. The glossary also specifies the limit values
(e.g. maximum cable lengths or speeds) of certain systems and com-
ponents.

10BaseT Ethernet with 10 Mbit/s transmission rate and the following character-
istics:
The workstations are connected in star to so-called HUBs by means
of UTP or STP cables with RJ-45 plugs. Each workstation is con-
nected individually with the HUB. The jointly-used line (bus), known
for example from 10Base2, is practically concentrated in such a HUB.
By cascading several HUBs, tree-like cabling structures can be cre-
ated. The maximum length of the individual connecting cables is
100 m.
10BaseT is supported directly by the SIDEXIS X-ray components.

HUB

10BaseT/100BaseTx/100BaseT4

100BaseTx Ethernet with 100 Mbit/s transmission rate and the following charac-
teristics:
The workstations are connected in star to so-called HUBs by means
of four-core UTP or STP cables (category 5) with RJ-45 connectors.
Each workstation is connected individually with the HUB. The jointly-
used line (bus), known for example from 10Base2, is practically con-
centrated in such a HUB. By cascading several HUBs, tree-like
cabling structures can be created. The maximum length of the individ-
ual connecting cables is 100 m.
100BaseTx is currently the most widely used 100 Mbit Ethernet and
is supported directly by the SIDEXIS X-ray components.

59 67 406 D 3407
D 3407.070.01.03.02 11.2008 115
100BaseT4 Ethernet with 100 Mbit/s transmission rate and the following charac-
teristics:
The workstations are connected in star to so-called HUBs by means
of eight-core UTP cables (category 3) with RJ-45 connectors. Each
workstation is connected individually with the HUB. The jointly-used
line (bus), known for example from 10Base2, is practically concen-
trated in such a HUB. By cascading several HUBs, tree-like cabling
structures can be created. The maximum length of the individual con-
necting cables is 100 m.
100BaseT4 is relatively rare and is not supported directly by the
SIDEXIS X-ray components.

Address In data processing, an address describes the place where data are
located in a memory, on a hard disk or on a floppy disk.

ANSI American National Standard Institute. A US organization dedicated to

the development and publication of industry standards. Among other
things it has standardized a character set (the ANSI code used under
Windows).

Backup Backup copies of software.

Boot disk Floppy disk which contains at least parts of the operating system,
so that after inserting the disk and switching on the system the system
can be started up with files of the floppy disk.

Booting Startup procedure of the computer and loading of the operating sys-
tem.

Bridge Device for the physical interconnection of two different network seg-
ments. Bridges are used to interconnect different network types such
as 10Base2 and 100BaseTx. Due to a certain “inherent intelligence”,
the switch is able to compensate for the different speeds. The data
packets hence undergo certain modifications.

Byte A byte is a sequence of 8 bits considered as a unit. The result is a

value range from 0 to 255 decimal (0 to FF hexadecimal).

Cat3 cable A UTP cable according to category 3 for use with 10BaseT or
100BaseT4 and transmission rates up to 10 or 16 Mbit/s.

Cat5 cable STP or UTP cable according to category 5 for use with 100BaseTx
and transmission rates of up to 100 Mbit/s. Cables according to Cat5
are recommended for use with SIDEXIS X-ray hardware (preferably
STP).

CD-ROM Compact Disk Read Only Memory. These sound storage media,
which have been used in the music world for a long time, can also be
used as data storage media for large data volumes. The data are read
by an optical laser system.

Cinch A connector which is used frequently for video or audio connections.

Client A computer which accesses shared resources on a network which are

provided by another computer, a so-called server.

59 67 406 D 3407
116 D 3407.070.01.03.02 11.2008
Cold start Loading of the operating system after switching on the computer.

COM A file extension which identifies executable programs.

COM Serial communication interface, e.g. for connecting a mouse or a

modem. Computers have up to four of these interfaces (COM1 ...
COM4).

Crossover cable Special network cable (with its wires connected crossed) which can
be used to directly connect exactly two network stations with one
another (i.e. without using a hub, switch or any similar device). The
crossover cable is frequently marked green in SIDEXIS installations.

Desktop The user interface on the screen.

DHCP The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol enables dynamic assign-

ment of the network configuration, particularly IP addresses, to net-
work devices. Separate IP address assignment for the individual net-
work devices can be omitted with a DHCP-compatible network.

DIP Dual Inline Package. IC design where the connection pins are
arranged opposite one another in two rows.

DIP switch Row of on/off switches in IC size for the basic setting of circuits and
boards.

Domain A group of computers for which common safety directives apply which
are stored on a domain controller. Each domain has a unique name.

Domain controller A server which checks the applications in the domain, applies the
safety directives and hosts the master database of the domain.

dpi Dots per inch (e.g. for monitors, graphics cards and printers).

Ethernet Network system in which all connected network stations use the same
medium (bus, usually the same cable, HUB, etc.). To ensure that not
all connected stations attempt to transmit data simultaneously, colli-
sion detection is used. Each station monitors constantly whether it
can transmit data over the jointly-used medium. If several devices
attempt to send their data simultaneously, then there are collisions,
which are detected. Data transmission is then reinitiated after a short
time. Since only one single data connection can be simultaneously
active on the medium, this method quickly leads to frequent collisions
in systems with many devices connected, which in turn leads to longer
transmission times.

EXE A file extension which identifies executable programs.

59 67 406 D 3407
D 3407.070.01.03.02 11.2008 117
File system Designates the complete structure within an operating system used
for naming, saving and managing files.
Data compression
Reduction of data volumes by means of algorithms. Data compres-
sion saves disk space and is necessary especially for images, which
usually account for huge data volumes. A distinction is made between
‘lossless compression’, in which no information at all is lost, and ‘lossy
compression’, in which a less relevant amount of the data is removed.
Removing this irrelevant data results in a higher compression, but
very high compression rates are accompanied by a more or less
marked loss of image quality.

Frame grabber Hardware for acquiring and digitizing a video image.

Gateway A gateway is a protocol converter. It allows networks based on com-

pletely different protocols to communicate with each other.

Gbyte, GB Gigabyte = 1,000,000,000 Bytes = 1,000 MBytes (alternative calcula-

tion because of the binary system = 1,024 MBytes)

Hard disk Hard disk

HDC Hard disk controller

Hub Device which forms the central transfer point in a network with cabling
in star, such as 10BaseT or 100BaseTx. On the one hand, the hub
assumes the role of a repeater which amplifies the signals. On the
other hand, the jointly-used line (bus), known for example from
10Base2, is "concentrated" in the hub.
A classical hub cannot interpret the signals to be amplified and is thus
(due to a lack of “inherent intelligence”) unable to perform a selection
or special processing of different data packets. The tasks of the hub
are therefore restricted to mere distribution and amplification of the
data streams. The term “hub” is also frequently used for related
devices such as switches, bridges, etc. These devices basically differ
from the hub due to the extent of their “inherent intelligence”.

I/O Input/Output. Input/output of data.

I/O port Interface handling the I/O functions, e.g. LPT or COM.

Plug-and-Play B1: Method supported by the BIOS of the motherboard for automati-
cally configuring plug-and-play boards and devices of the mother-
board during startup or operation of the system.
B2: For the X-ray components, plug-and-play means the possibility of
directly putting into service a PC with an internal/external X-ray box
and/or a networked ORTHOPHOS with the factory-set IP addresses.
Configuration of the X-ray components, as is necessary with several
components and external networks, is not required.

This mode is not recommended due to the risk of IP address conflicts.

Port Interface handling the I/O functions, e.g. LPT or COM.

POST Power-On Self-Test. Self-test of the system by a ROM BIOS routine

before loading the operating system.

Power supply Power pack for the power supply of the hardware.

Prompt Also called system prompt or DOS prompt, input prompt of the oper-
ating system. (e.g. ‘ C:\> ‘)

PS/2 Computer product generation from IBM with MCA. Among other
things, this has brought about an alternative interface type, e.g. for the
mouse and keyboard.

Refresh rate Measures the number of frame refreshes per second on the screen.
To obtain a flicker-free image for viewing, the information must be
transferred to the screen at least 50 times per second. For ergonomic
reasons, however, rates of at least 72 frames per second are recom-
mended.

Repeater A repeater receives signals and amplifies them before passing them
on. In a network it is used to increase the maximum range of the sig-
nals. The distance between two devices can thus be increased
beyond the maximum cable length by interconnecting a repeater.
Repeaters always work bidirectionally, so that the greatest extension
can be achieved if the repeater is installed in the center of the connec-
tion line. Since a repeater only amplifies the signals, but otherwise
leaves them completely unchanged, exactly the same network types
always must be installed on both sides of the connection. It is not pos-
sible to couple different networks. A repeater is completely transpar-
ent, i.e. invisible, for the connected devices.

RGB Color signals red, green and blue, e.g. as basic colors of the color pic-
ture tube of a monitor. In contrast to FBAS, the color channels can be
controlled individually in RGB. RGB monitors therefore have a higher
resolution than FBAS devices.

RJ-45 connector Eight-pin miniature connector (Registered Jack, occasionally also

referred to as Western plug) for connecting components on a network
(e.g. 10BaseT and 100BaseT), but also in the telecommunication sec-
tor for ISDN.

Router Device for the logical connection of two different network segments.
The router is responsible for forwarding data which are not intended
for the own segment to the second segment. A router has a certain
“inherent intelligence” for this purpose, since it must analyse the data
packets logically to decide this question.

Server A computer in a LAN which performs special tasks there.

(e.g. data server, print server, FAX server)

Service A service is a program that is started during boot-up and remains

active in the background. A variety of server components, e.g. the
SQL database, have services which provide the function on a sus-
tained basis.

Shielding Cable shields serve for protection against external influences which
may falsify data transmission. The (metallic) computer housing is also
a shield.

SIROCAM Intraoral video camera.

SIROCAM PC Computer with installed SIDEXIS software and video camera.

The patient and image database is stored on the local hard disk of this
computer.

SIROCAM workstation Computer with installed SIDEXIS software and video camera.
The patient and image database is stored on the hard disk of an X-ray
PC or SIROCAM PC which can be accessed through a network.

STP cable Shielded twisted pair (STP) cable means a shielded multi-core cable
in which two cores are twisted with one another. The maximum cable
length between a workstation and a HUB, switch, etc. is 100 meters.
In installations with wall sockets the lengths of exposed cables and
cables running in the wall must be added. Cat5 STP cables are rec-
ommended for use with the SIDEXIS X-ray hardware.

Switch Device which similarly to a HUB forms the central transfer point for a
network with cabling in star such as 10BaseT or 100BaseTx. Like the
HUB, a switch on the one hand assumes the role of a repeater which
amplifies the signals. On the other hand, the jointly-used line (bus),
known for example from 10Base2, is practically concentrated in the
switch.
However, in contrast to the classical HUB, a switch has a certain
“inherent intelligence”. It is used for example to interconnect different
network types such as 10Base2 and 100BaseTx. The switch is able
to compensate for the different speeds. The data packets hence
undergo certain modifications.

System DSN The system Data Source Name is used to access the SIDEXIS data-
base via ODBC. The DSN of the SIDEXIS software makes it possible
to find and utilize the database.

TCP/IP Transmission Control Protocol/Internet protocol. This protocol family

enables communication between different computer worlds and in
wide area networks (WAN).

TIFF Stands for Tagged Image File Format. This is a very flexible and
widely-used graphics format.

USB Universal Serial BUS

The USB is an I/O interface for a very wide variety of peripheral
devices. In addition to the keyboard, mouse, modem, printer, micro-
phone, loudspeakers, camera, scanner, etc., each new peripheral
device usually requires a different interface.
The USB knows only one type of connector for all devices, thus pre-
venting connection mix-ups. The devices are identified by the
USB host adapter in the computer, which also performs the basic con-
figuration.
The USB is particularly user-friendly since it does not require any spe-
cial settings such as proper termination, jumper assignments or pro-
tocol settings.
The USB connecting cable from the PC to a peripheral device must
not be longer than 5m.

UTP cable An unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cable, as opposed to an STP cable,
is an unshielded, multi-core cable, in which two cores are twisted with
one another. The maximum cable length between a workstation and
a HUB, switch, etc. is 100 meters. In installations with wall sockets the
lengths of exposed cables and cables running in the wall must be
added. A distinction is made in UTP between five categories (Cat1 to
Cat5 or UTP1 to UTP5). UTP3 is used for example for 10BaseT and
100BaseT4 networks. UTP5 is used in 100BaseTx and can thus be
used in SIDEXIS as an alternative to the recommended Cat5 STP
cable.

WAN Wide Area Network. Network that spans wide geographical distances
by means of remote data transmission (modem, ISDN, etc.).

Warm start Jump to the so-called warm start address. In a computer, the
[Ctrl]+[Alt]+[Del] key combination causes the processor system to
empty the memory and to reload the operating system. See cold start.
