This year we are finally in the band room instead of being in
the gym! It feels so good to start the year off in the band
room and it’s even better this year because the band got a
facelift with new carpet. If you get a chance, stop on in and
see the new patriot colored carpet! A few regional music
events have been changed to a different part of the year,
read more about it on the back page. After already having
two band rehearsals, I can say that I’m really excited about
both the JH and SH band this year.

A copy of the handbook was
sent home with students on
the first week of class. Please
read through the handbook
and contact me with any
questions. Return the back
page signed on both sides by
the end of September.
Instrument Success
Every instrument needs certain
items for proper maintenance.
Listed below are the items
needed for each instrument
and things to have done for a
great school year.
FLUTE: Cleaning rod and cloth.
Good pads and keys that close.
CLARINET: Cleaning swab, cork
grease and 3 good reeds with
cases. Good pads and keys that

SAXOPHONE: Cleaning swab,
cork grease and 3 good reeds
with cases. Good pads and keys
that close.
TRUMPET: Valve oil, slide
grease, and snake/spit balls. All
valves and slides should move.
FRENCH HORN: Rotary oil,
grease, and snake. All valves and
slides should move.
TROMBONE: Slide oil/cream,
grease and snake/spitballs. All
valves and slides should move.
TUBA: Valve oil and grease. All
valves and slides should move.
PERCUSSION: Stick, practice

Chaperones / Volunteers
If you are interested in being a chaperone for tournament
games, please send me your contact info. Once we get into
playoff season, I will send out dates and times to find out who
is available for each tournament date.
Tour
This year’s 10th, 11th and 12th graders are eligible to go on tour
with the music department to Chicago. We are finalizing costs
and dates with the tour company and will be sending home a
letter gauging tour interest soon. Start planning for the first
payment of $100 to happen around the beginning of October.
A payment schedule along with your child’s fundraising
balance will be sent out as soon as we have confirmation of
cost from the tour company.
Solo Contest
Our sub-section last year voted to change the time of year we
compete in solo contest. Solo contest will now take place in
January instead of November. I am excited about this change
as I feel it will give students more time to work-up a solo. All
9-12th grade band students are eligible to compete in solo
contest. I will send out an inquiry to the HS students in
October about interest in both solo and ensemble contest.
Junior High Honor Band
The Mahnomen High School will again be hosting their annual
JH honor band event. In the past this event has typically taken
place in March but this year it is planned for November 7th.
Band members in grades 7-9 are eligible to participate and
nominations will be sent in the beginning of October. This
event takes place at the same time as the JH honor choir as so
students in both band and choir who would like to participate
will need to choose between band or choir.
