ME 301: Mechanics of Materials - II 2nd Sessional Exam – Spring 2021

Time: 1 hr Total Marks: 15
Open Book Exam
Understanding each question is part of the exam, you can assume any missing value, and search
standard values from any book or internet (if missing in this paper). Give reference(s) to the searched
values. No queries will be entertained during the exam.

• Draw all the shear force, bending moment and free body diagrams neatly with proper
geometry tools on plain paper. Free hand sketches will not be accepted.
• Submit the solution of the whole paper as a single PDF file. Write page number, name and
registration number on each page. Keep the pages in sequence.
• Separate submission of each page will not be accepted.
• Submit your solution as an assignment in the google classroom until 12:10 PM on 06 May 2021.
• No submission on WhatsApp or email will be accepted, submit only in google classroom.
Q1. [CLO2/C3/PLO3] Linearly distributed lift load on each wing of an aircraft, along with weights of two
turbine engines (P1 and P2) is shown in Figure 1. The height h of the wing cross-section is constant; while, the
width b of the wing cross-section changes linearly as b = b1(x+3) along the length of the wing, where b1 is the
width of the wing cross-section at its free end. Assume a uniform elastic modulus E = 90 GPa for the wing
material.
L = 5 m , h = 300 mm , b1 = 150 mm, 0 < x < L .
w0 = A+B+C (in kN/m), P1 = P2 = A+B+C (in kN) where A, B and C are the last three digits of your
registration number; e.g. 19-ME-ABC
a) Determine numerical values of the reactions of fuselage on the wing. [01]
b) Draw neat shear force and bending moment diagrams of the wing with numerical values. [02]
c) Determine expressions for shear force and bending moment of the whole wing. [02]
d) Evaluate maximum deflection in the wing under given loading. [03]

Q2. [CLO2/C3/PLO3] For the given cantilever beam,
w = Sum of the last three digits of your registration (in kN/m)
P = Sum of the last two digit of your registration number (in kN)
(For example, your registration number is 19-ME-ABC. w = (A+B+C) kN/m , and P = (B+C) kN
a) Evaluate the unknown reactions at point A. [1]
b) Draw shear force and bending moment diagrams for the beam and loading. [2]
c) Determine slope and deflection at point D using moment area theorems. [4]
