gal from Grand Meadow got to
be a part of history.
Gopher senior Grady Schott
entered the meet having fin-
ished state runner-up at 182
last season. Expectations were
high. Schott, ranked #2, lived
up to the hype, grandiosely.
He authored two second period
pins in his first two matches. In
the semifinals, Schott beat Bad-
ger/Greenbush-Middle River’s
#4 Caleb Vacura (42-4) by 4-1
decision. Schott had two first
period takedowns for his points.
He beat Vacura in the semis last
season, too (9-4). In the finals,
it was a match-up of #2 Schott
versus #1 Carter Holtz (47-4)
of Kimball Area. Holtz scored
a reversal and near-falls points
in the second period to lead
6-1. In the third, Schott got
a dramatic pin 21 seconds in

to grab a state title, his second
of the year (football). He fin-
ishes at 41-1. He was 31-1 last
year. It’s the second straight
year Chatfield has had a state
champion, as Seth Goetzinger
did so last season. Chatfield’s
three other entrants didn’t
place. Freshman Javier Berg (#2
at 106) went 2-2. Berg (30-10)
alternated wins and losses by
decision (won 6-3, lost 4-3,
won 5-4 by TB-1, lost 8-3).
He faced just one ranked wres-
tler, beating Tracy-Milroy et al’s
#9 Linkoln Carlson (36-16) in
wrestle-backs. Sophomore Kail
Schott (#7 at 170) also went
2-2. He alternated wins and
losses (won 9-6, lost 8-0 major,
won 7-5, lost 3-1). His defeats
were to #1 Ashton Hanan of
Kimball Area (33-6) and #4
Caden Johnson (43-4) of Tracy-
Milroy et al. Schott (37-6) beat
Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City’s
#9 Jake Mortensen (34-10) and
Jackson County Central’s #8
Matthew Haley (40-12), as all
four of his foes entered ranked.
Sophomore Gage Bartels (#6 at
113) went 1-2 (lost 4-1, won
9-3, lost 9-7). Bartels (31-10)
fell to Border West’s #4 Cole
Sykora (40-6) while beating
St. Clair/Mankato-Loyola’s #7
Simon Kruse (45-6).
Caledonia/Houston had the
most overall success of the area
squads. Four of five Warriors to
compete placed. Owen Dens-
tad (132) and Tucker Ginther Spring Grove’s Caden Grinde soars in for two points in the Lions 62-27 Round of 16 playoff win
(145) each took third to lead over Kingsland. Knight senior Kaden Rath is also pictured. It was SG’s third win over Kingsland

#10 Nikolas Petsinger (39-9) to
make the semifinals. There he
fell to Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa’s
#1 Walker Bents (46-1), the
eventual champ, by 4-0 deci-
sion. Said match was 0-0 head-
ing to the third. Denstad then
beat ACGC’s #8 Cole Holien
(42-11) by 5-1 decision and
JCC’s #3 Logan Butzon (46-9)
by 10-5 decision. The match
with Holien was 1-1 in the third
before Denstad got a takedown
and back points. Entering the
tourney unranked, the sopho-
more Denstad (46-5) beat three
ranked guys to claim third place.
Ginther also was impressive. The
junior fell in his first match by
5-1 decision to Kimball Area’s
#10 Gavin Winter (25-4). Gin-
ther then ran off four straight
close decision wins in wrestle-
backs to take third. He used a
5-0 first period to beat Crosby-
Ironton’s #6 John Paul Fitzpat-
rick (44-7) by 5-3 final. Ginther
then won 6-4 over ACGC’s #7
Brady Holien (47-5) and 5-4
over D-E’s #3 Brodie Kellen
(38-8), a 1A finals re-match.
The match versus Kellen was
tied 2-2 heading the third; Gin-
ther started with an escape, then
got a takedown for a 5-2 lead.
Finally, Minneota’s #9 Zack Fier
(21-7) fell by 4-2 decision in
SV-1. Ginther trailed Fier 1-0
in the third before getting a
takedown. Fier escaped for a
2-2 tie. Ginther recorded a take-
down in overtime. He finishes at
35-9, placing for the first time
in his fourth state appearance.
Braxton Lange (106) went 3-2
to take fourth. He opened with
two decision wins, 5-0 over

Murdock-Sunberg’s #1 Trey
Gunderson (48-1), the even-
tual champ, by 8-1 decision.
Lange then won by 7-2 decision
before losing by 6-2 to Holding-
ford’s #5 Wyatt Novitzki (37-4).
Lange (33-17) entered unranked
but beat two ranked foes. Bran-
don Ross entered the tourney
looking to defend his 2021 120-
pound state title. The senior (#1
at 126) opened with 9-4 and
5-0 decision wins. In the semis,
Ross fell to Royalton/Upsala’s
#4 Alex Diederich (45-4) by 5-2
decision. Ross (19-4), having
missed most of the year to knee
injury, then medically forfeited
his last two matches. He took
sixth. Finally, Ayden Goetzinger
(#8 at 195) went 1-2. The junior
(32-9) won his opening bout
by 7-2 decision before falling
to Benson’s #1 Thomas Dineen
(47-0) by fall and Holdingford’s
#6 Sam Herren (32-9) by 10-2
major. Dineen won the state
title.
GMLOS’ top finisher was a
part of the MSHSL’s first ever
girls state wrestling tournament.
Diann Smith (138) had taken
second at the Section 1-4 meet
to Eastview’s Riley Meyers.
There is only one section for
girls wrestling. Smith went on
to the state “Final Four,” where
she won her first match over
Bemidji’s Jaydyn Kelly by first
period fall. Smith then faced off
against Meyers again, falling by
2-0 decision. Meyers (17-11)
scored a takedown with 0:42
left in the third period to earn
victory. Smith (11-3), a soph-
omore, finishes as 138-pound
runner-up. She is the daugh-
ter of GMLOS wrestling coach

Smith was a state entrant last
season. Cohen Wiste took on his
fourth state meet. Like his previ-
ous experiences, this was shorter
than hoped. He went 1-2. Wiste
(#1 at 138) won his first match
by 6-4 decision over Canby’s #9
at 132 Lane Fink (40-8). The
junior then fell to Blackduck/
Cass Lake-Bena/Kelliher’s #10
Christian Pater (32-3) by 12-2
major, then to Howard Lake-
Waverly-Winstead’s unranked
Mitchell Malak by 6-2 decision.
Wiste finishes at 41-6. Chris-
tian Luthe (285) opened with a
win by fall but then lost by 8-3
decision to Royalton/Upsala’s #3
Jeremy Mugg (45-6) and then
by fall to United North Central’s
unranked Marcus Peterson (29-
18). Luthe, a senior, finishes at
26-11. Older brother Clayton
was also a state entrant.
1AA Girls Basketball;
GM Girls Move on
to Section Final
Five Journal 11 teams began
the week alive in the Section 1A
girls playoffs. By Saturday night,
only one was left standing.
Rushford-Peterson, Fillmore
Central, Lanesboro, Kingsland,
and Grand Meadow all battled
amidst 1A quarterfinal and/or
semifinal contests. The Super-
larks will play for their first 1A
title.
Burro Girls Fight Past K-W
It was physical. It was a battle.
Lanesboro’s girls (4-seed, 18-8)
only trailed early in their 1A
quarter with Kenyon-Wanamin-
go (5-seed, 12-13). Bret Klaehn’s
group held off a late Knight
charge to earn the school’s first
berth in the section final four
since 2007. The Burros trailed
just once, 3-2. But an athletic
Knight group, one that featured
kids that led their volleyball
team over Mabel-Canton in the
1A finals, never went away. They
constantly applied full-court
pressure. Lanesboro battled past
it. The Burros built a 16-8 edge
midway through the first half
only for a 7-0 K-W run and a
16-15 game. Lanesboro then
gained some breathing room by
halftime, up 26-18. And the
Burros began the second half
13-4 to go ahead 39-22. K-W
slowly chipped away at that lead.

A mini 6-0 spurt under the four-
minute mark had the Knights
within four (49-45). Josie Flom
hit three second half trifectas
to help key the comeback. But
the Burros immediately got a
momentum halting three-point
play from leading scorer Kaci
Ruen, who K-W concentrated
their defense on. A three by Tessa
Erlandson again made it a four-
point game (52-48 > 2:00), but
Jessie Schreiber and then Jenysn
Storhoff hit two free throws in
the final minute. K-W missed
its last seven shots. Lanesboro
scored the last six points to earn
the 58-48 victory. All six Burros
to score tallied at least six points.
K-Ruen (13 pts, 18 rebs) was
somewhat contained by K-W’s
aggressive defense, but she still
led Lanesboro in scoring. Malia
Tessum (12 pts, 3-4 threes) and
Schreiber (10 pts, 8 rebs) also
made double figures. Tessum
had nine in the first half. Bri-
elle Ruen (9 pts, 6 rebs, 5 stls),
Ella Cambern (8 pts, 3-4 FGs),
and Storhoff (6 pts, 4-5 FTs, 7
rebs, 4 asts) helped. Flom (15
pts) hit four threes to pace the

Burros Repelled in Second
Half, Fall to Hayfield
Lanesboro’s girls (4-seed, 19-8)
gave undefeated #3 Hayfield
(1-seed, 29-0) a good shot. But
it wasn’t enough in the first 1A
semifinal at Mayo Civic Audito-
rium. It took almost about 24
minutes for the favored Vikings
to even lead on the scoreboard.
Lanesboro started the game 7-1.
At one point, they led 26-13.
They had turnovers versus the
Vikings full-court press, but the
Burros were able to put the
ball in the bucket. Kaci Ruen
had 12 points in that 26-13
start. Then, in the blink of an
eye, the lead evaporated. Hay-
field went 13-0 late in the first
stanza, scoring said points on
five straight possessions. They
tied the game at 26-26. It was
tied 30-30 at intermission. Hay-
field finally took its first lead

biggest shots were a couple threes in the second half, ones that helped GM post a

an 9-0 run that put Hayfield
up 45-37. All told, Hayfield
scored on six straight posses-
sions shortly preceding and dur-
ing the run, with uber-quick
sophomore guard Kristen Wat-
son tallying nine of 14 points.
The Burros hung around, but
the Vikings had weathered the
storm. Ahead, they played keep
away late from Lanesboro, which
had implemented a zone defense
effectively in gaining their lead.
Said zone was futile while trail-
ing. The Burros couldn’t apply
enough pressure late to trigger
steals. The Vikings hit 10 of 12
free throws down the stretch.
After building a 45-37 lead,
Hayfield then never led by less
than five. They held off a game
Burro team by a 60-49 final.
K-Ruen (13 pts, 5-7 FTs, 15
rebs, 5 stls) led the Lanesboro,
but she was held to just one sec-
ond half point. Jessie Schreiber
(12 pts, 9 rebs) also hit double
figures. Eighth grader Jensyn
Storhoff (8 pts), Brielle Ruen (7
pts, 9 rebs), and Malia Tessum
(7 pts) all helped. Hayfield got a
game-high 25 points (9-15 FTs),
8 rebounds, and 6 steals from
Watson. Fellow sophomore Nat-
alie Beaver added 18 (pts) and
7 (rebs). Stasko chipped in 10
(pts), 8 (rebs), and 4 (asts). That
trio scored 53 of the Vikings 60
points. Hayfield’s late charity
stripe work gave them an edge
at the line; 17 of 25 (68%) to
12 of 23 (52%). The Vikings’
full-court press also triggered 21
Burro turnovers. Hayfield had
13. The Vikings went 5 of 21
from deep (24%), Lanesboro 1
of 6 (17%). Bret Klaehn’s group
finishes an excellent season at
19-9. They both won their first
SEC-East title and went as far as
they’ve ever been in the playoffs
since 2007. Three key seniors
graduated; Tessum, B-Ruen,
and Ella Cambern.
Cotten’s Harvest Leads
GM Past Kingsland
In a 1A quarterfinal versus
Fillmore Central, Kingsland’s
bench was key to victory. Versus
Grand Meadow (3-seed, 22-6),
it was a key Lark bench player
that helped Ryan Queensland’s
group finally get a win over
the Knights (2-seed, 19-8). The

Larks used a methodical offense
and a couple different defens-
es to suppress Kingsland. The
Knights got off to a good start,
8-3, getting back-to-back threes
from Shelby Beck to start the
game. But GM then scored on
four straight possessions, tally-
ing a 9-0 run to take a 12-8 lead.
Junior reserve guard Sydney
Cotten had five of those points.
Just minutes later, she had five
more points in a 9-3 Lark run.
GM built a 21-13 lead. The
Larks netted just one more
field goal the rest of the half.
Knight Audrey Webster scored
nine straight Knight points. By
halftime, GM’s lead was 25-22.
The start of the second half was
defensive. GM got the stanza’s
first field goal with 13:10 on
the clock. The teams each had
one field goal the first eight-
plus minutes, a war of attri-
tion between SEC-West rivals
who know each other very well
(GMLOKS track and field and
GMLOK softball teammates).
Kingsland’s second make of the
second half, a Beck bucket, tied
the game at 27-27. But Kendyl

two games in 2021). The Larks
picked a good time to end a six-
game skid versus their eastern
neighbor. By a final of 46-37,
they moved on to their first
1A final! Cotten, who moved
to the bench when Lexy Foster
returned from injury, paced GM
with 15 points (3-5 FGs, 7-7
FTs). She was the only Lark in

LARP (Lewiston-Altura/Rushford-Peterson) former wrestler Parker Brand was inducted into
the SE Minnesota Region 1 Hall of Fame on March 7, 2022. Brand had an outstanding 145-39

high school career, which included 80 career pins. In his last three years as a prep wrestler he
climbed the ladder; he placed 2nd at 171 as a sophomore, 3rd place at 189 as a junior. The dream
season came in 2008 as Brand had the perfect season, by going 44-0, winning the 215-pound
state championship. Brand followed it up with a 3rd place finish at the NHSCA Nationals at
215. He earned the Most Pins in the Least Amount of Time award for all of the senior class at
Nationals in Virginia Beach, Va. Brand took the NJCAA by surprise his freshman year at RCTC,
and was the National Runner Up at 197 pounds. He also qualified for NJCAA Nationals his
senior year.
Brand found several familiar faces at the induction; as a 7th grader he had wrestled another
athlete inductee, Shane Masching of Hayfield. Wayne Lexvold, assistant coach inductee from
Kenyon-Wanamingo, had coached Brand at Nationals at Virginia Beach; the inductee official
Tom Kuisle from Wabasha who had coached and refereed in the area for almost 50 years crossed
paths with Brand often. Last year’s coach inductee Mike Buringa from PEM and Kasson-Man-
torville was a JV coach for LARP while Brand was wrestling. Brand attended Nationals after
Buringa encouraged him to do so. At Nationals, Buringa was Brand’s coach!

passenger safety, the Minnesota
Department of Public Safety
Office of Traffic Safety has a
map that you can click on for
your area, and it will bring you
to a “car seat check.” dps.mn.gov/
divisions/ots/child-passenger-
safety/Pages/car-seat-checks.aspx.
If this doesn’t work out, a
person can always check with
their local police department/
sheriff’s office, local public health
department or any hospital and
clinic. If they are unable to help,
they should be able to point you
in the right direction.

must be in a child restraint until
they are 4’9” tall, or at least age
eight, whichever comes first.
• Rear-facing child seats
– Keep your child rear-facing

ages 0–7 who were properly
restrained in the past five
years, 88% were not injured,
and another 9% sustained only
minor or possible injuries.
