Statement of the Problem

The study aims to Specifically, it seeks to answer the following problems:

1. What are the most essential learning competencies in Grade 8 World History subject

as perceived by the teacher-respondents?

2. What is the level of awareness of grade 8 students relative to the identified MELC?

3. What are the least mastered skills among the most essential learning competencies

per content topic?

4. What can be proposed from the results of the study?

Scope and Delimitation

This study focuses on the Challenges Encountered by Teachers in

Teaching MTB-MLE. The respondents in this study are the twenty (20) teachers

from Barcelona North Central School, Luneta Elementary School, Tagdon

Elementary School, Mapapac Elementary School, and Paghaluban Elementary

School in Barcelona, Sorsogon. The determined schools were assumed to have

direct involvement in the implementation of MTB-MLE wherein the participants

are composed of Kindergarten to Grade three-level school teachers.

The administrators and grade 4, 5 and 6 teachers from Barcelona

North Central, Luneta, Tagdon, Mapapac and Panghaluban Elementary

School as well as those coming from private institutions formed part of the

delimitation of the study.

Significance of the Study

This study will be beneficial to the following:

Students. This research primarily focuses on the historical awareness of grade 8

students in Gubat, Sorsogon. The results of this study will identify the least

mastered skills among the most essential learning competencies per content
topic of grade 8 world history. Thus, this study will serve as an aid for pupils in

cultivating their historical awareness.

Teachers. The output of this study will serve as an effective instruction tool of the

teachers in teaching Grade 8 World History subject. This study will establish a

smart and attainable solution that promotes quality education in the improvement

of historical awareness of the grade 8 learners.

School Administrators. This study will provide information to the school

administrators about challenges being encountered by the teachers in teaching

MTB-MLE that will serve as a basis for them to specifically identify the needs of

the MTB-MLE teacher in the teaching field. In addition, the result of this study will

be relevant in formulating guidelines to further develop the learning and teaching

process specifically in the course of Mother Tongue.

Department of Education. The findings of this study will enable the department

to identify the challenges encountered by the MTB-MLE teachers under their

supervision. Moreover, they will be able to provide additional support and

learning resources to MTB-MLE teachers. Thus, the study can serve as a

basis for policy-making.

Curriculum Makers. The result of this study may encourage

curriculum makers to plan out curriculum which are responsive to the

teachers’ needs. Likewise, for them to even conceptualize other non-

traditional instructional delivery mode of learning that teachers may use in

delivering instructional lesson.

Parents. This study will provide parents the information on how they would be

able to provide additional support and help for the improvement of their children's

literacy in Mother Tongue, Filipino and English.

Researchers. This work may be useful, relevant and beneficial to future

researchers. This would give some baseline data about Challenges

Encountered by Teachers in Teaching MTB MLE.

A study by Gultekin et al. (2011), states that most of the students have described

history lessons as difficult to understand to learn and use such expressions as

“boring, uninteresting an monotonous”.

According to Kelley (2021), student attitude is especially relevant with social

studies classes where students often have preconceived notion that social studies

is not important to study for their future. The reason for this is the lack of

instructional time in the classroom devoted to social studies and it is not on

standardized tests. The study shows that students with a higher attitude towards
school, social studies curriculum, and instructional strategies are on trend to have

higher achievement in social studies classes.

Research by Kelley (2021) supports that four of the thirty students said that social

studies were their favorite class in school. This is evidently low compared to

33.33% of students stating that science or math was their favorite subject.

Furthermore, when it comes to social studies instruction, students often do not

like to engage in social studies instructional strategies because they find them

boring.

The results of this study will be beneficial both to the researcher/s and

stakeholders. This will be communicated to the following beneficiaries:

Students. The expected Grade 8 Junior High School learners in the future, as

well as the current students. The findings of this study would benefit, inspire, and

help them to be and historically aware of the lesson from the MELC. Wherein, the

result will generate improved and innovative MELC rendering to a wider and

extensive awareness of the significant role of history in students' lives.

AP Teachers of World History. This study would help them to cater to a better

learning experience for students as they are the ones who have a huge part in

the teaching-learning process. Using the findings of this study, history teachers
will be able to create and improve a new and improved strategy for teaching

World History at Araling Panlipunan 8.

School. This study would enable the school to realize better ways and means to

improve the students’ abilities and skills that would empower them to be

competent and become the nation's hope and pride. This study’s output shall

render new knowledge to what a school shall offer in the subject of World History

8 to achieve its VMGO to hone a civic-conscious individual.

Community. The more engaged and open the community, the more the historical

linkage can be attained. As a result, the students will not just be historically

aware inside the school premises but also beyond scholastic scope. Hence, this

study will generate the civic-conscious individuals that the community needs the

most, as the youth are the future of today’s generation.

DepEd. It was brought out on Wednesday, June 23, that DepEd aims to nurture

the historical awareness of Filipino learners, teachers, parents, and the general

public through the creation of a DepEd TV History Channel that will air films and

documentaries featuring Philippine and World History. Therefore, the result of

this study will be beneficial in terms of the content that must be highlighted in the

creation of the channel.

According to Santos (2021), the K-12 curriculum brought a significant change in

Social Studies/ Araling Panlipunan curriculum at the Basic Education level, but

much still must be done to introduce relevant topics in history and culture

following local contexts. As such, local historians and educators pursued its

relevance to studying local history to embark to the mind of todays' learners the

local history of their pace. The implications underlined the need for teachers to

introduce more novel ways to integrate topics in local history in the AP classroom

and strengthen local studies centers to promote the study of local history for the

future.

their Appreciation of Local Cultural Heritage. International Journal of

Multidisciplinary: Applied Business and Education Research, 2(6), 520-527.

The Department of Education specifies that the goals of the Araling Panlipunan

curriculum can be met when students develop the following related skills:

investigation; examination and interpretation of information; research;

communication, particularly written essays; and compliance with ethical

standards. However, Muyot (2022) emphasizes in a statement that “Students are

typically assessed based on their ability to retain information on key dates,

names, and places. More attention must be given to the teaching of Araling

Panlipunan so that students can develop the critical thinking skills essential in a

world where there is a deluge of information.” It was suggested that the

Department of Education change the way students are assessed when learning

about history. Teachers can also facilitate discussions where opinions can be

shared, giving students a broader understanding of topics instead of emphasizing

the rote of memorization in teaching Araling Panlipunan.
