You are the head nurse of the medical ward. Your supervisor is sending two nurses
from each hospital ward to an upcoming critical care conference. The supervisor
requested each head nurse under her jurisdiction to submit the identified nurses to
join in the conference. All of the 16 full-time nurses of the medical ward would like to
go. All are active in the local critical care organization. Financial resources, however,
limit your choice to two.

1. What manager’s role are you going to apply to the situation? Give 1-2 sentence/s
to rationalize your answer? (5 points)

In my opinion the best manager role for this situation is Decisional Role. I believed
that as a head nurse you will be the one who will identify conflicts and make
decisions to solve the issue. This role will help to manage such issues to bring the
group together to choose only two people and help them to negotiate with this kind of
situation.

2. What management theory is most appropriate to apply in solving the problem?

Explain your answer in 1-2 sentence/s. (5 points)

The most appropriate theory for this situation is Frederick’s Scientific Management. I
believed that this theory is important for the cooperation and management of the
group. Also, this theory will help those who have weak points by giving them
opportunity to develop and improve it.

3. Identify 3 Fayol’s management principles applied in the situation and give 1-2
explanations of each why you identified that principle. ( 3 points each x 3= 6 points)

Equity- Head nurse should give fair chances to 16 nurses. And give equal privileged
to other 14 nurses who were not chosen and have them attend to the next
conference.

Authority- In one group there must be a one leader to create unity and help the
group. I believed that giving an authority to one person like a head nurse would be
helpful to choose a deserving people to go to the ward.

Unity or command- Unity in one group is very important to create cooperation to

comply with the rules. Without it, there will be no effective management.
