Objectives The objective of this lesson is to help students master solving multi-step
equations.
The students will utilize technology in order to learn together as well as from the
teacher.

Differentiation Students will engage visually through the Viewsonic Whiteboard. Students will
Strategies engage orally by helping the student at the board. Students will have a chance
to work the problems out on the whiteboard. Students will be able to take notes
and fill out their worksheet as they follow along in class.

E Description

Engagement Equations will be worked out for the students on the whiteboard so they may see
the proper steps needed to solve the equations. Students will also be allowed to
paerticiapet by providinging input and solving problems on the board as well.
Problems are taken from their classroom curriculum worksheet, which is
proprietary to their Algebra teacher.

Engagement I will call on students from the class to answer questions about the next step to
Assessment solving the equation. I will choose randomly, based on body language cues to
offer engagement to all students.

Exploration Students will work out problems on the ViewSonic Whiteboard, engaging this
technology to produce a visual map of the problem and solution. Students will
collaborate with classmates who provide direction for next steps and offer help to
achieve the solution.

Exploration Students remembered seeing the problems worked out visually. They were able
Assessment to recall the steps when called upon in class up to three days later and offered
helped to classmates in the general ed classroom based off their experience in
my resource room.

Explanation The students in my classroom are all special needs who are struggling with
multi-step equations. They fail to write down the steps and can’t remember the
proper order needed to approach the solution. I will use the whiteboard to model
the proper order of operations and the steps needed to solve the equation.
Terms include: multiplication, division, addition, subtraction, variables

Explanation Students showed steps toward mastery as they began to use the terms in the
Assessment lesson to explain the input they offered.

Elaboration Your turn to teach! Select one problem from the worksheet or create your own.
Work out the solution yourself and check with Coach Smyth for accuracy. Then,
place your problem on the board and call on your classmates to help solve each
step of the equation. Candy will be provided for you to reward correct answers
and good effort. Be sure to call on every student and give all a chance to learn.

Evaluation Accuracy of solving an equation you choose: 1 pt.

Legible handwriting on the white board: 1 pt.
Courteous interaction with peers: 1 pt.
