A year before his arrival in Lima, the Ayacucho musician Moisés Vivanco had
formed the “Compañía Peruana de Arte”. As a student of folk music, Moisés
attended Yma's concert and suggested joining his musical ensemble. He then
formally began his career in early 1942, the same year he made his international
debut on radio Belgrano in Argentina. But his life was not easy. In January 1946,
the “Peruvian Art Company” had been dissolved and Yma, together with her now
husband, Moisés Vivanco, decided to try their luck in the United States, where they
suffered a series of ups and downs. There was even a period when they were
engaged in the tuna trade until Sumac became pregnant with her first child.
With time things would improve. Yma got a contract with the record company
Capitol Records, so they moved to Hollywood in 1950, having their first big concert
there in August of the same year. Then, in September, Yma recorded her first
album “Voice del Xtabay.” Until 1959, Yma recorded six albums for Capitol
Records and, according to her words, cultivated "the music of Peru, although a little
more modern." Despite the fact that in her native country she did not obtain the
fame she deserved, Yma Sumac is considered the most universal figure that Peru
has given and is the only Peruvian artist who has a star on the Hollywood Walk of
Fame.
