Variable Wingspan Concepts for the Air ONE eVTOL Vehicle
©2021 Applied VTOL Concepts

Current Challenge: A large wingspan is needed to provide enough efficient

aerodynamic lift during cruise flight to offset most or all of the vehicle gross weight so
the fan power can be reduced – increasing range. Conversely, a short wingspan is
desirable to provide a smaller landing footprint so the vehicle can more easily maneuver
and land in potential, small landing areas such as residential garage driveways and
commercial parking lot spaces. Two variable wingspan concepts are presented:

Folding Wingspan: A method is presented for the automatic reduction of Air ONE’s
wingspan, from 30’ to approximately 20’, while velocity slows from best L/D cruise
speed to hover, and for the automatic extension to full wingspan while velocity
increases from hover to best L/D cruise speed. The method is simple and fool-proof,
requiring no mechanically nor electrically powered components, nor failure-prone
operating systems. Fan thrust is seamlessly managed by the autopilot to accommodate
changes in wing lift. FIGURES 1 - 4 show the Air ONE standard wing replaced with the
enhanced Moshier Folding Wing (MF-Wing™) having the same wing chord and
aerodynamic design, and crucially the ability to automatically fold and unfold during
flight. The MF-Wing’s incremental weight is miniscule.

Telescoping Wingspan: A method is presented for extending Air ONE’s root wingspan
from 20’ [up to]* 30’ while increasing velocity from hover to best L/D cruise speed, and
reducing wingspan back to 20’ for hover, landing and takeoff, utilizing the Moshier
Telescoping Wing (MT-Wing™) see FIGURES 5 - 7. Both root wings incorporate a simple
electro-mechanical, carbon-fiber rack & pinion drive and nested-spar mechanism. In the
unlikely event of a system malfunction (i.e., if the torque on the two motors differs by a
set amount) the wing movement automatically stops and is held in place. In this event, a
normal landing is carried out, albeit with the wingspan not fully retracted. Again, fan
thrust is seamlessly managed by the autopilot to accommodate changes in wing lift.
* For high-speed flight, the MT-Wing length can be shortened a scheduled amount,
reducing parasite drag while maintaining the same lift due to the faster airspeed.

License Opportunity: The MF-Wing and the MT-Wing may be applicable to current and
future AIR family of vehicles, while also being potentially attractive to other aircraft
manufacturers for use on their eVTOL vehicles which incorporate fixed-wings. At this
time, exclusive licensing of the technologies is available, and may be of interest to AIR.
