2 Description
2.1 General
(See Fig. 8-6, page 8-7 and Fig. 8-7, page 8-8)
The contaminated medium flows by the flange marked as entrance into the filter.
It moves through the filter insert from the inside to outward and steps cleaned out
from the flange marked as exit. The flushing phase of the filter is activated either
by reaching at the differential pressure switch the differential pressure or after a
pre-set interval of time. The flushing valve opens and a greater amounts of soil-
ing flushes out. Afterwards the flushing disc makes two strokes in the filter insert,
thus producing an increase in speed between the flushing disc and the filter wall.
The local loss of pressure produced a ”suction effect” in the filter element. By
means of this pressure drop the coarser and easily cleanable particles are
flushed out of the insert liner through the opened flushing valve out of the filter.

The automatic filter will be controlled via an electronic control box. The parame-
ters will be entered via the keyboard or via the integrated serial interface respec-
tively. Thus the filter can be monitored and remote controlled by a control station.
The programmable control unit supervises at defined measuring points the pres-
sure within the entry region of the filter. It triggers the flushing process caused by
monitored differential pressure or time-based control algorithm. The flushing pro-
cedure can be released additionally at any time manually.

• And the supply and drain pipe must be layed without any mechanically stress
to the filter. This applies also under thermal load conditions of the pipes.
• The different operating parameters such as filter nominal size, flow rate,
pressure and/or the pertinent pump characteristic must be considered in the
configuration and correctly implemented.
• Particularly the drilling diameter of the aperture and the diameter of the flush-

5. If the cover is delivered separate of the filter, connect the air lines for the
pneumatic cylinder in accordance with the attached connection diagram
(see Fig. 8-8, page 8-9). Connect the compressed air feed to the com-
pressed air station with an air hose of at least 10/1 mm. The air pressure
has to be about 87 psi (6 bars) and a maximum of 116 psi (8 bars) /
Special 50.7 psi (3.5 bars).
6. If the pneumatic controlling is not mounted at the filter, connect the water
hose for the differential pressure switch to the connections A and B in ac-
cordance with the connection diagram. In this process, it is important to
know that the filter’s automatic mechanism does not function if the con-
nections are changed.
8. If the filter has mounted a termonal box, the connection to voltage supply
as well as the external components such as flushing valve etc. is made by
screw-type terminals in the separately accessible terminal box. The fuses
are also placed here.

1. Before setting into operation check the proper condition of the electric ca-
bles and connections of the control.
2. Check the compressed air adapter. The distribution of compressed air must
be supplied with 87 psi (6 bars) / Special 50.7 – 116 psi (3.5 – 8 bars),
check with pressure gauge. Check before setting into operation whether the
distribution of compressed air, the magnetic valve and the pneumatic cylin-
der (drive of the flushing disc) are properly supplied with compressed air.
• In order to avoid damage to the filter and the plant, never operate the filter
without the control. The operation without liquid is not damaging the filter.
At emptying from pipes therefore it is not necessary to set the filter out of
operation for its own protection.

Start up the electronic control by switching on the mains switch (Fig. 8-7 / 12,
page 8-8) at the control unit. After switching on the control unit a filtration cycle is
introduced automatically (The filtration can be started also at any time by press-
ing the key "FLUSH").
Check whether the flushing valve opens and the piston carries out thereafter two
strokes (pre and decreasing/going back movement). The test of the piston func-
tion should be accomplished under operating conditions, because a high system
pressure and flow impair the time which is used for a full piston stroke.
It is to be considered, that the pressure difference of 145 psi (10 bars) does not
arise. Otherwise the membrane of the differential pressure switch can be dam-
aged.
4-6
Stand: 09/2007 Georg Schünemann GmbH, Bremen
Automatically Operating Filter F450
Implement the following steps, in order to check the proper function of the filter.
4.6.1 Switch on Control with the Power Switch, first Flushing Phase/Pre-Flushing
Check.
By pressing the power switch the first flushing phase starts automatically. The dirt
drain valve opens against "atmosphere-pressure" and/or around at least 8.7 psi
(0.6 bars) for lower system pressure (consider pressure losses of the piping).
During the first flushing phase the flushing disc is located in the initial position in
the upper region of the filter housing.
1. Adjust the pre-flushing time T2 at the electronic control according to the fil-
ter size if necessary (see Tab. 4-1, page 4-9).
2. Adjust opening velocity of the dirt drain valve by means of throttles. Turn
throttles in clockwise direction slows down the opening.
Attention! Opening to fast causes impacts in the pipes!
The running time must be adjusted absolutely at initial start-up locally, under re-
alistic operating conditions. This cannot be done in the factory!
In the second flushing phase the pneumatic drive starts to move down and the
flushing disc drives through the filter. At the reed contacts are light emitting di-
odes, which indicate a reaching of the end point.
1. Adjust the time for piston stroke of the pneumatic drive by means of com-
pressed air throttles present on the drive to the running time in accordance
with table 4-1, page 4-9.
Too fast accomplishing of the strokes of the pneumatic cylinder affects the filtra-
tion negatively, because the sieve is moved through from the flushing disc to
fast.
4-7
Stand: 09/2007 Georg Schünemann GmbH, Bremen
Automatically Operating Filter F450
The control time specifies only the max. time (seconds) between start and end
of a piston stroke. If this time is exceeded a warning is given! The piston stroke
itself is set at the compressed air throttles (see item 1).
The valve of the flushing line closes some seconds after the flushing disc is
moved back into the initial position. The LCD display at the control indicates
“F 450“.
Change the adjustment only if it should be optimized. Wait for operational ex-
perience!
In the case of cleaning of the sieve with a high pressure cleaner is to be paid
attention to an appropriate distance!
Otherwise the sieve can be damaged by a too high pressure!

5 Operation
5.1 Controls
The control will be switched on and off via the power switch (at the right side of
the housing). Afterwards the control can be activated by pressing the < ON/OFF
> - key (Fig. 8-7 / 15). The operation is done menu guided on the liquid crystal
display (LCD) (Fig. 8-7 / 20) and with the keys at the front panel. Alternatively
operation is also possible via the interface. The following keys and displays are
installed at the control unit.
5-1
Stand: 09/2007 Georg Schünemann GmbH, Bremen

After switching on, the control system starts a flushing procedure immediately. By
pressing the < ON/OF > key the control system can be deactivated. A renewed
pressing of this key will activate the control system.
Switch on parameter mode: For setting the parameter, the control system must
be set into "OFF"-condition. In order to switch on the parameter mode, both arrow
keys must be pressed simultaneously, and the <ON/OFF> key must be actuated
too. The arrow keys must be kept in the pressed-down position for 2 s, and the
program will start in the parameter mode.
ALTERNATIVELY and/or at new control systems the < Enter > key is pressed for
approx. 2 seconds, and the program will start in the parameter mode.
During this mode of operation, the flushing function is switched off. It will neither
be possible to interchange the data via the serial interface.
Data input: Using the arrow keys, the individual menu items could then be se-
lected and activated by means of the <ENTER> key. The entries should be made
by means of the arrow keys and terminated by means of the <ENTER> key. In
case of multi-place entries, this has to be done for each place. Upon termination
of the menu by using the <ENTER> key, the parameters altered in such a man-
ner will be stared and safeguarded against a voltage breakdown.
Operating hours Here the hour meter of the control system is indicated. A
maximum period of 999.999 hours can be added up.
This value cannot be modified.
Lifting time T3 (control This period can be set within a range of 1sec up to
time for piston stroke) 23h59min59sec. It represents the running time that the
pneumatic piston may need for reaching a terminal posi-
tion (LS1, LS2).

Contrast At this menu item the contrast of the LCD can be modi-
fied in order to ensure a better readability depending on
the viewing angle.
DPS – Log The flushing times as well as the time intervals between
these various flushing procedures will be recorded and
stored as a minute value. This is how a maximum num-
ber of 76 values (38 flushing cycles and cycles without
flushing) can be stored and called up again. If the mem-
ory is full, the older values will automatically be overwrit-
ten. The memory position indicated at first will get the
oldest value.

There are three types of flushing when the control mechanism is switched on and
ready for operation:
• manual flushing:
The flushing process is started by pressing the <FLUSH> button. The
pneumatic piston runs through two strokes after the set flushing time ex-
pires.
• If the pneumatic piston does not reach its end position (LS1, LS2) within the
prescribed time T3, there is an error signal “stroke error” and the stroke is
triggered. The further sequence is identical to constant flushing.

8.3 Communication
After transmitting the instructions, any control system data can only be received
upon a changeover time of approx. 20 ms.
The data record structure for the autonomous signal for error conditions differs
from the structure of the control and the inquiry during normal operation. The fol-
lowing error conditions will be signaled via the interface:

Declaration of conformity
TÜV 05 ATEX 2804 X
Equipment category II 2 G c T4
• The filter is approved for a explosive risked region with gases, vapours,
fog, which need equipments of the category 2.
• Outside of the filter Zone 1 is approved. Inside with none zone. The operator
has to pay attention that the inside remains without zone.
• The filter is not signed with the ambient temperature of the region. This has
to be taken out of the declaration of conformity.
The manpower planning and the operation of the filter in explosive risked region
have to be effected by the generally rules of technic. The employment has to be
resolved by attention of the equipment nameplate, the operation manual and the
declaration of conformity.
The filter has to be grounded before setting-up operation and should not be iso-
lated electrical.
The employments are only permitted to be done by an electrical qualified person
with accordant qualification. The electrical connection takes place in the EX-
certificated terminal box outside of the explosive risked region, if it is included in
delivery. The operation is only permitted with completely closed and undamaged
boxes. The operation with a damaged box is forbidden.
ATTENTION : Before functioning at the electric circuit and before opening the
terminal box inside of the explosive risked region, the electric circuits have to be
switched into the dead-voltage / currentless status.
Only therefor permitted tools and measuring equipments are allowed to be em-
ployed in the explosive risked region. In case of a disturbance the circuit connec-
tions and the electricity supply outside of the explosive risked operation region
have to be checked on there correct function.
Modifications and repairings at the electric components are not allowed.
If only the proximity switch and the differential pressure switch are delivered, they
have to be connected at intrinsically safe electric circuit, for example:

Automatically Operating Filter F450
If the filter is delivered without any electrical equipments, all provided electrical
components, supplied by the customer, have to be up to the mark of the guide-
line 94/9/EG (ATEX 100a).
The pneumatic cylinder and all continuing electrical attachments of the filter have
to perform the guideline 94/9/EG accordant its appliance. By installation and op-
eration of this devices their operation manuals and the EN 60079-14 have to be
respected.
The device is only permitted for the operation with compressed air, which is pro-
duced and prepared outside of the EX-region. Requirements should be taken
from the provided operation manual for the pneumatic valves of the Company
Festo.
If the filter will be set in operation outside of atmospheric conditions but in explo-
sive atmosphere, the approval only provides a basis as guideline.
Additional inspections for the special provided operating conditions are sug-
gested. This inspections are laying in the area of authority at the operator.
10.4 Maintenance
The electrical attached parts have to be maintained and cleaned regular accord-
ing to the delivered documents. The intervals are forced by the operator.
The exchange of components only has to take place with original spare parts,
which are approved for the employment in the EX-region.
