Why a religion?

Ingon sila nga ang relihiyon di makaluwas sa tawo?...

The Catechism of the Catholic Church says: The desire for God is
inscribed in man's heart, since man is created by God and for God; and God
never ceases to draw man to Himself, and in God alone man will find the truth
and happiness he never ceases to seek.1

Man himself is already a proof of this truth, since he possesses the

instinct of the divine.

There is an indelible principle in the human soul called the sense of being. To
illustrate this briefly, let's imagine the following scene: a small child, lying in
its cradle, gazing wildly at its surroundings. Suddenly, her mother's loving
hand hangs in front of her a shiny and beautiful ball, blue, gold, or red, held in
place by a silk ribbon. She cannot even pronounce the word "ball" yet, but the
first assumption consists in the notion that she, the child, is she, and the ball is
the ball, and from this a relationship is established between the two.
It can be seen that in the first attitude taken by the child there is a first look of
intelligence, in which his spirit grasps, from the data provided by his senses,
the fact that something is: "the ball is, I am". What does the verb "to be" mean?
The boy doesn't even define it, the first notion is that he is, and the ball is.
Second: he and the ball are not the same thing. Third: since the two things are,
there has to be a relationship between the two. Normally the child cannot be
indifferent to the ball, and perhaps the ball is not, in some respect, indifferent
to him. The child sees the ball and thinks that the ball constitutes a good for
him, completes him at some point, reaches out his little hand and takes the
ball. Soon after, instinctively, he puts it to his lips. It is the incipient idea that
the good contained in the ball becomes part of him, if he licks and bites it.
Now, this problem of self-completion will extend throughout man's entire life.
And, although without saying it, everything he seeks in his existence is
something he finds it necessary to have. This instinct is a pale reflection of
something much deeper in human nature, which is the instinct of the divine,
which we carry within us and which urges us toward something higher. The
desire for happiness and eternity that we carry is but the instinct that seeks
God, just as a vegetable lives in search of the sun. This is a gift implanted in the
human heart.
Therefore, we can say that we are naturally religious: in their history, and
until today, men have expressed in multiple ways their search for God through
their beliefs and their religious behavior (prayers, sacrifices, worship,
meditations, etc.). Despite the ambiguities they may carry, these forms of
expression are so universal that man can be called a religious being.
Thus, the supernatural virtue of religion orients man towards God alone,
because through it, worship and ceremony is offered to the superior, divine
nature. It is, therefore, a special virtue, since it consists in giving to God the
honor of life and offering to God what is rightfully His. It prevails over all the
other virtues.
The virtue of Religion can also be understood as closely related to the
theological virtue of charity and the cardinal virtue of justice. For, as St.
Thomas Aquinas teaches, divine worship, whose formal object is the honor of
God, is a strict duty of every rational creature: The existence of only one God
leads us to believe in the existence of only one true religion, because it would
be contradictory for the same God to affirm two different doctrines. What
must happen is that the Catholic faith needs to get in touch with the other
cultures of the world in order to evangelize and bring them, through this Way,
to the light of Truth and Life.
