Final Project
For your final project, you are required to study any department of LUMS and identify a
communication issue within the department. Here is a guide.

Step 1: Find a resource person/contact at the department at LUMS.

Choose someone who will share information with you, tell you about the issues and
communication lapses.

Step 2: Conduct interview(s) to find communication issues/strategy

Develop questions and conduct interviews to find specific issues and instances. Remember, the
better the questions, the better the answers.

Step 3: Develop a case, identify issues and give recommendations.

- Choose flow/headings from the documents* shared with you in class, depending on
what kind of data you are able to get
- Identify the stakeholders.
- You may include any of the frameworks/matrices that you have studied or that have
been shared with you in class
* i) Writing a communication strategy _ GCSGCS, and ii) UNEP Communication

Step 4: Write your report

The purpose of the report is to convince the reader that you have been able to adequately
highlight the communication problem/issues, and that the communication strategy or
communication plan that you have put together addresses the communication issues of the
concerned department at LUMS. Following are some of the aspects/sections that you can
include.
- Begin with a specific story (lay out the context briefly) – a sort of an engaging case
(see case studies studied during the course for a feel, such as Apple/Toyota)
- Discuss the communication issues, do not leave out the specifics
- Develop a communication strategy and/or plan based on solutions undertaken by the
department with respect to the issues. Include any framework that the department
may be using to guide its communications
- Propose a communication strategy and/or plan for any communication issue(s) that
the organization has not addressed
- Remember to balance the content, in terms of quality. In depth and insightful is better
than shallow and superficial.
- The case study part of the report should be of 2500 words.

Step 5: Write a Teaching Note

Write a teaching note for the case study. This will be a separate document. Following are the
instructions for teaching note.

Teaching notes should convey what the student is to accomplish at the end of the case. They are
designed to provide the instructor with a general understanding of the case content, objectives,
key issues or questions, and suggested teaching approaches of the case.

Teaching notes should be written concurrently with the case. Unlike the case, which is written in
past tense, teaching notes should be written in the present tense because they are the writer’s
current analysis of issues raised in the case. They may include:

• Potential uses of the case

• Potential audience of the case
• Teaching objectives
• Suggested teaching approach/plan
• Case description/synopsis of the case
• Immediate use(s) of the Case
• Basic issue(s)
• Possible discussion questions
• Suggested student assignments
• Suggested additional readings or references
• Computer and multi-media support, if any.
• Teaching themes and lessons from the case .
