time, Israel would give up a
triangle of claims to waters off
the coast. Lebanon could then
develop the Kana gas field.
The “resistance,” as Hezbol-
lah claims to be, is now hop-
ing that this deal could see
Lebanon become rich off gas
development. This is a change
of tune for Hezbollah, which
had been threatening up until
recently to strike at Israel’s Kar-
ish gas field. As recently as July,
Hezbollah launched drones
targeting the Karish field and a
platform located there.
Nabil Qaouk did not mention
Israel in his recent speech, but
he says the current situation
means Lebanon will become
an oil and gas producer and
can exit from its economic cri-
sis. “This is good news and can
be the beginning of progress
that we want all Lebanese to
benefit from at the national
level,” he said, according to
Tasnim News in Iran and Al
Jadeed TV in Lebanon.
Meanwhile, Hezbollah is
seeking to influence the for-
mation of a new government
in Lebanon. It has vowed to
take action to “solve” the
issues related to government
formation and choosing a new
president, set to be voted in on
October 31.
However, Lebanon has gone
through this before; Hezbollah
prevented a new leader from
being chosen from 2014 to
2016.
Hezbollah poses as Leba-
non’s helping hand, a respon-
sible component of the polit-
ical system. But at the same
time it wages conflicts around
the region and backs Iran. It
backs pro-Iranian militias in
Syria and Iraq. It continues to
threaten Israel with more than
100,000 missiles and drones.
Nowadays, Hezbollah
appears pleased by the pros-
pect of a maritime deal. This
is new rhetoric. In the past,
Hezbollah rejected US-led
mediation about the waters
off the coast, but now Hez-
bollah appears to be flexible.
This could be due to the fact
it thinks Lebanon has fulfilled
most of its demands and Israel
hasn’t gotten much.
In addition, under the deal,
Lebanon wouldn’t have to rec-
ognize Israel, so Hezbollah can
continue its “resistance” activ-
ities, stockpiling and moving
missiles under the watchful
eyes of the UN in southern
Lebanon; changing nothing.
At the same time, Hezbollah
is spreading rumors that for-
eign embassies “are planning
to elect the president accord-
ing to their desired specifica-
tions so that foreigners will
dominate the country and as a
result Lebanon will be in chaos
and sedition will drag on.”
Hezbollah has argued that
it has another plan that will
see Lebanon achieve econom-
ic success. The group claims it
doesn’t want a political vacu-
um to emerge in the country,
as in the past.
However, pro-Iranian groups
often benefit from vacuums
because they act as parallel
governments and they can
therefore increase their power
when the state is weak. They
have done this in Baghdad,
where pro-Iran parties have
prevented the country from
forming a government.
Meanwhile, in Iran, the
regime that backs Hezbollah
is facing chaos due to protests.
Hezbollah may be concerned
by this development and fear-
ful of heating up a maritime

researchers from Bar-Ilan Uni-
versity (BIU) in Ramat Gan has
linked reproductive success in
male rock hyraxes to their abil-
ity to maintain rhythm during
songs.
“Male hyraxes that sing more
frequently tend to have more
surviving offspring,” said Prof.
Lee Koren of BIU’s Goodman
Faculty of Life Sciences, who
initiated the study with Dr. Eli
Geffen.
It has just been published in
the British Ecological Society’s
Journal of Animal Ecology under
the title “Male rock hyraxes

One only needs to look at the
adoring fans of famous musi-
cians, such as The Beatles and
the Red Hot Chili Peppers, to
realize that being rhythmical-
ly skilled is a desirable trait.
In male rock hyraxes, singing
frequency and rhythm (non-
random temporal structure)
could be seen as indicators of
individual quality by potential
mates, signaling information
about their health and suitabil-
ity as a partner.
To investigate the role of
rhythm in mammalian court-
ship songs, the scientists
observed the daily morning
activity of hyrax communities
between 2002 and 2013 at the
Ein Gedi Nature Reserve near
the Dead Sea. The researchers
captured information about
their location, behavior and
vocalizations while recording
the identities of their nearest
neighbors. Genetic informa-
tion for each hyrax was then
analyzed in the lab alongside
audio recordings.
“Male hyraxes that sing more
frequently tend to have more
surviving offspring,” Koren
said. “Song rhythms and sta-
bility are related to reproduc-
tive success and thus poten-
tially hold information about
individual quality.”
Unlike many other ani-
mals known to communicate
through song, hyraxes usual-
ly sing alone, according to Dr.
Vlad Demartsev, who collected
the data for this study while
at Tel Aviv University and is
now a postdoctoral researcher
in the biology department at
the University of Konstanz in
Germany and the Max Planck
Institute of Animal Behavior.
“Their songs have regional
dialects, so individuals living
in proximity sing more sim-
ilarly to each other,” he said.
“They tend to sing in crescen-
do [getting louder as the song
progresses] and reach peak
complexity towards the end of
their songs, maybe to keep the
audience engaged and listen-
ing to the signals.”
“We have been studying
hyraxes for the past 20 years
and have previously found
several patterns in their songs
that are common features of
human language and music,”
he said.
Rhythm plays a crucial role
in the communication of some
animals. Acoustic courtship
displays have been described
in fish, insects, frogs and mam-
mals. Nevertheless, bird songs
