Poison: Lead
Antidote: Dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA), BAL

Dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) is an effective antidote for certain forms of heavy

metal poisoning, less toxic than dimercaprol, which has been used extensively in
Russia and more recently in the Western world. Both agents increase the urinary
excretion of copper and zinc, but in therapeutic doses, this is not considered to be of
clinical significance.

Dimercaprol, also called British anti-Lewisite (BAL), is a medication used to treat
acute poisoning by arsenic, mercury, gold, and lead.

used in the treatment of heavy metal toxicity (lead, arsenic, gold and mercury toxicity). It
is formulated in a peanut oil suspension and is not suitable for patients with a peanut
allergy.
3. Poison: Methanol
Antidote: Ethanol, Fomepizole

Ethanol is used in the management of toxicity due to ingestion of methanol, or

ethylene glycol.

Fomepizole

Antizol (fomepizole) is an antidote used to treat poisoning with ethylene glycol

(antifreeze) or methanol (contained in solvents, fuels, and other household or
automotive chemicals). Antizol is sometimes used together with hemodialysis to rid the
body of a poison. Antizol is available in generic form.
