Speech-recognition technology
Speech-recognition technology is a form of technology wherein devices have the ability to
respond to spoken commands. According to Zwass, this technology enables hand-free control of
various devices and equipment, provides input to automatic translation, and creates print-ready
dictation (Speech Recognition, n.d.)

Motion-sensing devices
Motion-sensing devices are electronic devices designed to detect and measure movement.
Unlike many other types of sensors, motion sensors are typically embedded systems with three
major components: a sensor unit, an embedded computer, and hardware (Jost, 2019).

Digital camera
Digital cameras are hardware devices that take photographs and store the image as data on a
memory card. Unlike an analog camera, which exposes film chemicals to light, a digital camera
uses digital optical components to register the intensity, color, and light and converts it into pixel
data (Computer Hope, 2021).

Scanning devices
According to the Collins English Dictionary, scanning devices are electronic devices that scan
artwork and illustrations and convert the images to digital form for manipulation and
incorporation into printed publications (Collins English Dictionary, n.d.).

Optical data readers

Optical data readers are devices found in scanners that capture information on paper and
translate that image into digital information the computer understands and can display
(Computer Hope, 2017).

Magnetic ink character recognition (MICR) devices

Magnetic ink character recognition (MICR) is a technology used primarily to identify and process
checks. The MICR on a check is the string of characters that appears at the bottom left of the
check. It consists of three groups of numbers, including the bank routing number, the customer's
account number, and the check number. The MICR includes, from the left, a nine-character
routing number, a 12-character account number, and a four-character check number (Khartit,
2022).

Magnetic stripe cards

A magnetic stripe card is a card embedded with magnetic technology that allows personal
information to be read when swept through a card reader. This personal information can include
the cardholder’s name, address, account number, and account balances. Instant access to this
information allows transactions to be processed quickly and accurately (Laney, 2022).
Smart cards
According to Lutkevich, a smart card is a physical card that has an embedded integrated chip that
acts as a security token (Lutkevich, n.d.). Moreover, smart cards are typically the same size as a
driver's license or credit card and can be made from metal or plastic. They connect to a reader
either by direct physical contact or through a short-range wireless connectivity standard such as
radio-frequency identification (RFID) or near-field communication.

Contactless payment cards

Contactless payment cards are debit or credit cards with contactless technology. Additionally,
contactless payment cards work a lot like mobile wallets, wherein the transaction is completed
by simply holding or tapping the card on a contactless-enabled card reader (Capital One, 2021).

Point-of-sale (POS) devices

POS system devices, or point-of-sale system devices, facilitate transactions in retail sales. An
example of a well-known POS system would be a cash register. Modern POS systems devices are
a combination of hardware and software that often includes a barcode scanner, card reader, cash
drawer, and receipt printer. The customer interface is often a touchscreen. The simplest modern
POS system devices are a credit card scanner connected to a tablet (Johnson, 2022).

Automated teller machine (ATM) devices

According to CFI, automated teller machine devices (ATM) are specialized computers that allow
bank account holders to check their account balances, withdraw or deposit money, transfer
money from one account to another, print a statement of account transactions, and even
purchase stamps (CFI Team, 2020).

Bar-code scanners
A barcode scanner works by directing a beam of light across the barcode and measuring the
amount of light that is reflected. The dark bars on the barcode reflect less light than the white
spaces between them. The scanner then converts the light energy into electrical energy, which
the decoder then converts into data and forwards to a computer (AB&R, n.d.).

Radio frequency identification (RFID)

According to Homeland Security, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology uses radio
waves to identify people or objects. There is a device that reads the information contained in a
wireless device or “tag” from a distance without making any physical contact or requiring a line
of sight (Homeland Security, n.d.).

Pen input devices

In computing, pen input devices are instruments shaped like a pen, designed to be used with
graphics tablets or devices that use touch screen input. Moreover, it is used to write or draw on
a screen, similar to how you would on a sheet of paper. Unlike writing pens, pen input devices
have plastic or felt tips depending on their purpose and functionality (Computer Hope, 2021).
Touch-sensitive screens
Touch-sensitive screens are display devices that allow users to interact with a computer using
their finger or stylus. They're a useful alternative to a mouse or keyboard for navigating a GUI
(graphical user interface). Touch screens are used on various devices, such as computer and
laptop displays, smartphones, tablets, cash registers, and information kiosks. Some touch screens
use a grid of infrared beams to sense the presence of a finger instead of utilizing touch-sensitive
input (Computer Hope, 2022).
