1744 - the buckling of a beam under axial compression was first derived by Euler in 1744 Leonhard Euler first worked out in 1757 the theory of why such members buckle. of the shear tab plate occurred for the two pure shear tests before either the bolts or the plate failed in shear; consequently, lateral support for the load beam was included for subsequent tests. The 230 mm depth of connection did not provide sufficient resistance to lateral buckling at the relatively high test levels of shear

1847 - Beams can fail through lateral-torsional buckling, as well as by bending. An early failure of this type was the cast iron Dee Bridge in 1847, designed by Robert Stephenson, one of the most famous early British engineers Ludwig Prandtl wrote a paper on Lateral Buckling of beams of narrow rectangular cross section bent in the plane of minimum flexural rigidity(kipperscheinung)

Plus: Correspondence. 'The lateral buckling of Concrete Beams Lifted by Cables' by Dr. RA Swann and Dr. WG Godden, published in The Structural Engineer, January 1966. Mr. AR Kjar (Research Student, University of Tasmania) writes: ' In part 2 the authors have presented results of tests on I-beams and concrete columns lifted by cables
