Welcome to
Significant Small Craft of 1998.

his new annual R IN A publication follow s in the w ell-established footsteps of

T Significant Ships and revives, with the words ‘Small C raft', the nam e o f the
m uch-respected RINA m agazine which was incorporated into Ship & Boat
International upon this latter title’s acquisition. Although som e m ay claim that
100m long fast ferries hardly qualify as ‘small craft’, it was felt that a clear
distinction needed to be drawn between the content o f this volum e and that o f its
sister publication.

Others may question w hether the selected vessels are truly significant. M any of
the craft described characterise the current state o f their respective arts but the
adjective ‘significant’ does not necessarily relate to perform ance and high
technology. A fa i 08 , for exam ple, deserves its place prim arily as being a
m ilestone in Chinese vessel building progress and, by virtue o f its size, P acificat
has surely been an am bitious first time effort for its C anadian builder. M ost
observers would certainly include A rcticaborg , Kayo M a r u , N eu w erk and N ew
R iver in their list - for different, but obvious, reasons. However, whilst the
rationale behind other selections may be less clear, I do not intend to justify them
all; readers should come to their ow n conclusions. Suffice to say that, as pilot
boats, tugs, fast ferries, salvage craft and offshore vessels form the bulk o f the
under 100m com m ercial vessel market, so they com m and equivalent
representation in these pages. It is, unashamedly, a personal choice for w hich I
take full responsibility.
In some fields, o f course, things change little from year to year. In others,
progress is rapid. As 1999 begins, several vessels appearing in the y e a r’s early
editions o f Ship & Boat International have been earm arked for inclusion in the
next issue o f Significant Sm all Craft. In one field at least, innovation described
on the following pages already seems to have been superseded. Long m ay this
tendency continue.

SR 2100 Fiber-Optic Gyrocompass The new standard in gyrocompasses

The Sperry Marine SR 2100 Fiber-Optic Gyro has set a new standard in
gyrocompass technology. With no moving parts it requires no maintenance
and provides superb reliability.

The combination of very short settling times, high dynamic accuracy, zero
north speed error, light weight and compact size makes it an ideal gyro for
high speed applications. Indeed it has already been fully approved to all
IMO recommendations for high speed use as well as for all conventional
vessels.

As well as being a highly accurate heading reference, the SR 2100 is able

to measure roll, pitch and rate.
