BLOCK DIAGRAMS and

FLOWCHARTS
ENGR. MARICEL M. SUERTEFELIPE
INTRODUCTION
What is a Block Diagram?

A block diagram is an engineering tool that provides high-level

overview of major system components, key process participants,
and important relationships.

It is a diagram of a system in which the principal parts or

functions are represented by blocks connected by lines that show
the relationships of the blocks. They are heavily used in
engineering in hardware design, electronic design, software
design, and process flow diagrams.
EXAMPLE OF A BLOCK DIAGRAM
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
BLOCK DIAGRAM AND CIRCUIT DIAGRAM?

A block diagram is high-level such that it does not show the

detailed wires, switches and/or connections as opposed to the
circuit diagram.

A block diagram is focused on the input and output.

A circuit diagram is a graphical representation of an electrical

circuit. A circuit diagram, also called an electrical diagram,
elementary diagram, or electronic schematic, is a simplified
graphical representation of an electrical circuit.

WHAT IS A FLOWCHART?
A Flowchart is also a diagram which shows the sequence of movements
or actions of people or things involved in a complex system or activity.

In computer system, it is defined as a graphical representation of a

computer program in relation to its sequence of functions (as distinct
from the data it processes)
