Locomotor Skills
Walking is a slow locomotor
skill that involves moving the
body from one place to
another.

Running is a locomotor movement that

involves moving the body quickly from
one place to another. It involves
transferring weight from one foot to the
other, briefly losing contact with the
ground.

Jumping going up and down, with

both feet in the air at once; can also
mean jumping off a height or jumping
forward.

Hopping is a locomotor movement

that involves taking off and landing on
the same foot. It is a continuous,
rhythmical skill that requires dynamic
balance.

Crawling is a slow creeping

mode of locomotion consisting
of forward motion while the
children's weight is supported by
their hands (or forearms) and
knees.

Marching is a locomotor
movement. Locomotor
movements involve moving the
body from one location to
another.

Climbing is a locomotor skill that

involves moving up and down
using the hands and feet. Climbing
is also used to move through, under,
and up vertically structured habitats
like forests.

Galloping is a combination of
two locomotor
movements, leaping and
walking. The galloping
movement moves forward or
backward, but not to the side.

Sliding is a sideways movement

where a lead foot takes a step to
the side, followed by the other
foot stepping next to it closely.

leap is a locomotor movement

characterized by a take-off on
one foot, a long flight phase and
a landing on the opposite foot.

Skipping is a locomotor skill

that involves combining two other
locomotor movements: walking and
hopping. It's characterized by a step-
hop on one side of the body, followed
by a step-hop on the other.

Non-Locomotor Skills

Bending is a non-locomotor
movement that involves moving the
body from a straight position to a
curved or angular position.

Flexing is a non-locomotor
movement. Non-locomotor
movements are fundamental body
movements that don't involve
traveling. They are also called axial
movements. Non-locomotor
movements do not involve moving
the body from one place to another.

Stretching is a non-locomotor skill

that involves moving body parts away
from the body's center. It involves
moving a joint through a range of
movement.

Swinging is a non-locomotor
movement that involves moving a body
part back and forth. It can also mean
moving a body part from side to side or
forward and back.

Twisting is moving a body part around

a long axis. It's a non-locomotor
movement because it doesn't involve
traveling from one place to
another. Instead, it involves staying in
one position and rotating in place.

Turning is a non-locomotor
movement that involves rotating the
body around its base. Non-
locomotor movements are
performed in one place without
changing location. They can be used
in exercise, dance, and
choreography.

Curling is a non-locomotor
movement that
involves moving a limb from
a straightened position to a
curled or coiled position.

Swaying is a non-locomotor skill

that involves shifting weight
from one side of the body to the
other. It's a rocking motion that
requires balance and body
awareness.

Manipulative Movements

Throwing is a manipulative skill that

involves propelling an object away
from the body. Manipulative skills are
gross body movements that involve
applying force to or receiving force
from objects.

Catching is a manipulative skill

that involves controlling the force
of an object with a body part. It's
also known as a "sending and
receiving skill".

Kicking is a manipulative skill

that involves using the foot to
apply force to an object and
propel it. It's a fundamental skill
for foot-eye coordination and is
used in all football codes.

Hitting is a manipulative
skill that involves using
an object with the limbs.

Striking is a manipulative skill that

involves using hands or feet to control
objects. Manipulative skills are basic
motor skills that involve receiving,
exerting force, or maintaining control
over an object while moving. They are a
key component of many sports and
physical activities.

Dribbling is a manipulative skill that

involves moving a ball with the hands
while maintaining control. It requires
hand-eye coordination, finger control,
and good timing.

Punting is a manipulative
movement where the foot
contacts a ball and is a part
of rugby, soccer, and
football. Kicking a soccer
ball is a type of manipulative
movement.

Volleying is a fundamental
manipulative
skill. Manipulative skills

that involve applying or
receiving force from objects.is
