REST AND MOTION – KINDS OF
MOTION
There are three types of motion:-
1. Translatory Motion
2. Rectilinear Motion
3. Curvilinear Motion
4. Circular Motion
TRANSLATORY MOTION

The motion of all the particles of a body move through the same distance in the same time is called
translatory motion.

C
Rectilinear motion
when a body moves along a straight line , the motion described by
the body is rectilinear.
Curvilinear
motion

When a body moves

along a curved line, the
motion described by the
body is called curvilinear
motion.
ROTATORY MOTION
A MOTION IN WHICH A BODY MOVES AT A FIXED AXIS WITHOUT
CHANGING ITS POSITION IS CALLED THE ROTATORY MOTION.
Circular motion

A body is said to be in circular motion, if it moves in a circular

path around a fixed path.
OSCILLATORY MOTION

The ‘to and fro’ motion described by an object is called oscillatory motion.
VIBRATORY MOTION
The vibratory motion is a kind of oscillatory motion in which the moving object
undergoes rapid to and fro motion.
PERIODIC MOTION

A repetitive motion, which repeats itself after a fixed interval

of time is called the Periodic Motion.
NON-PERIODIC
MOTION

A repetitive motion, which repeats itself, but not at fixed intervals of time,
is called non-periodic motion.
Random motion

An object which changes suddenly changes its motion from 1 kind to the
other is said to have a random motion.
UNIFORM MOTION

When a body covers equal distances in equal period of time, it Is said to be

in uniform motion.
NON-UNIFORM MOTION

When the body covers unequal distances in equal intervals of

time, it is describing a non-uniform motion.
