Periodic Motion
❑ Periodic motion is a motion that
regularly repeats - the object returns to
a given position after a fixed time
interval.
❑ The motion of a pendulum is a good
example. (The pendulum repeats its
motion in a fixed interval of time. )
Types of Periodic Motion

Wave Motion Oscillatory Motion

What is Oscillatory Motion?

The oscillation body

moves on both sides
around its original
position.
This motion is repeated in
equal period of time
What is Oscillatory Motion?
The displacement of the oscillating body
around its original position are equal
The velocity of the oscillating body
reaches its maximum value when it
passes its original position and decreases
gradually when it goes far from it.
What is Oscillatory motion?

Oscillatory motion is defined as the to and fro

motion of an object from its rest point, where the
motion is repeated in equal period of time. The
ideal condition is that the object can be in
oscillatory motion forever in the absence of friction
but in the real world, this is not possible and the
object has to settle into equilibrium.
Simple Harmonic Motion (SHM)

A Special type of oscillatory

motion in which:
1.Acceleration is directly
proportional to displacement.
2.Acceleration is always directed
towards the mean position.
Simple Harmonic Motion (SHM)
For any simple mechanical harmonic system that is displaced from
its equilibrium position, a restoring force which obeys the
Hooke’s law (for relatively small deformations of an object, the
displacement is directly proportional to the deforming force.) is
required to restore the system back to equilibrium. Following is
the mathematical representation of restoring force:
F=−kx
• F is the restoring elastic force exerted by the spring (N)
• k is the spring constant (Nm-1)
• x is the displacement from equilibrium position (m)
Amplitude
It is the maximum displacement done by the oscillating
body Wy from its original position.
The measuring unit of the amplitude is meter “m” or
centimeter “cm”
Periodic Time (T)
It is the time taken by an oscillating body to make one
complete oscillation.
The measuring unit of periodic time is second “sec”
The periodic time = time in seconds/number of
complete oscillations
Frequency (F)
It is the number of complete oscillation made by an
oscillating body in one second.
The measuring unit of frequency is Hertz “Hz”
The frequency= number of complete oscillations/time
in seconds

• Kilohertz= 10^3 Hz
• Megahertz= 10^6 Hz
• Gigahertz= 10^9 Hz
The Relation Between Frequency
and Periodic Time

Frequency (F) * Periodic Time (T)= 1

Frequency (F) = 1/T
Periodic Time (T) = 1/F
Examples of Oscillatory Motion
Following are the examples of oscillatory motion:
• Oscillation of simple pendulum
• Vibrating strings of musical instruments is a
mechanical example of oscillatory motion
• Movement of spring
• Alternating current is an electrical example of
oscillatory motion
• Series of oscillations are seen in cosmological model
