SDO LAGUNA STEM – P WORKSHEET

RESEARCH I QUARTER 4
Hi there my dear student! Today, you and your classmates will begin a new week of distance learning. We are all physically away from
each other do not think that you are alone in this learning journey. There are other students learning with you too. And also I will closely guide
and assist you in your lessons. Please be guided of the following:
 This study guide will help you with the flow of the activity and the lesson.
 Answer the activities on a separate sheet of paper. (Please take care and do not write anything on your module
and other activity sheets.)
 If you see this icon you are free to reach me if you need my assistance. You can find my contact no. on your
class schedule. (You can also reach me out through social media platforms.)
 Expect to receive a phone call or a text message from me for the follow up.
 Compile all your answer sheets at the end of the week and wait for the announcement when to submit them.

Time allotment: 2 hours Let us make learning science fun and exciting!

What you need to learn?

At the end of the lesson you should be able to: 1. List steps in scientific method;
2. Define each step of scientific method;
3. Apply the scientific method in an experiment.

Lesson: THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD

Lesson Steps

Have you ever wondered?

 Does music have an effect on the plant growth?
 Can mice learn?

Science is an integral part of our life. The purpose of science is to create scientific knowledge. It is
characterized in an essential way by what is commonly called as the scientific method. The main content of
this method is a set of general rules, criteria as how to set a scientific research.

Let’s Try to Figure out!

Learning Task 1: Can you find the 5 hidden words in the puzzle? Encircle the word that
you will find.

 OBSERVATION
 QUESTION
 CONCLUSION
 HYPOTHESIS
 EXPERIMENT

Reminder: Answer the activity on a separate sheet of paper.

Please do not write anything on the Research Worksheet

What is a SCIENTIFIC METHOD?

Scientific method, mathematical and experimental technique employed in the sciences. More specifically, it is
the technique used in the construction and testing of a scientific hypothesis.

STEPS OF THE SIENTIFIC METHOD

1. Observing- the action or process of observing something or

someone carefully or in order to gain information.
Example: The toast won’t toast!

2. Identifying and formulating a problem. It is the first and most

important step of a research process. The research problem serves
as a foundation of a research study; like a building and its
foundation
Example: Why won’t my toaster toast?

3. Collecting relevant information about the

topic/problem. Data collection is a systematic process of
gathering observations or measurements.  Before you
begin collecting data, you need to consider:
 The aim of the research
 The type of data that you will collect
 The methods and procedures you will use to collect, store,
and process the data

4. Formulate hypothesis. A hypothesis is a statement that

introduces a research question and proposes an expected result.

Example: Maybe the outlet is broken

5. Designing an experiment. The design of experiments is the

design of any task that aims to describe and explain the
variation of information under conditions that are
hypothesized to reflect the variation.

6. Experimenting. An experiment is a procedure carried out

to support, refute, or validate a hypothesis. Experiments
provide insight into cause-and-effect by demonstrating
what outcome occurs when a particular factor is
manipulated.

7. Gathering data from the experiment. Experiments are
carried out for researchers to collect data. These data then
can be analyzed or processed to produce meaningful
conclusions.

8. Organizing experimental data. Data organization refers to

keeping your information organized. There are different ways
of organizing data. It may be: Data Scrubbing, charts and
graphs and organization by category and attributes.

9. Analyzing and interpreting data. Data analysis and

interpretation is the process of assigning meaning to the
collected information and determining the conclusions,
significance, and implications of the findings. Data may be
in NUMERICAL (Quantitative) or NARRATIVE (Qualitative)
form.

10. Making a conclusion. A conclusion is not

simply a summary of the findings and the
research conducted. Importantly, the
conclusion provides a significant and vital
opportunity to explain to the reader exactly
what the research means to the various
audiences who have an interest in the research.

wrong. Write SCIENTIFIC if it is correct, METHOD if it is wrong.

1. Hypothesis proposes an expected result.

2. All data in an experiment comes in numerical form.
3. Making a conclusion is the first step in scientific method
4. Bar graphs can be used in organizing data.
5. Conclusion is the summary of findings in an experiment.
