THE AUTUMN LADY

A story about how autumn came brought in the wind’s pocket...

It happened on a hot September day when the wind coming from the East picked up a little lady and put her in
one of his pockets.

She was wearing a multicoloured jacket. The dwarfs and elves called her The Autumn Lady.
No one knew where she came from, but when she arrived a big adventure started and everyone got ready to
travel to the centre of the Earth.

It was fun to watch the Autumn Lady pass by. She had kindness and joy in the twinkle of her eyes.

When Wind flew over the clouds, the lady told them to rain softly. And so they rained.
That first, magical rain, showed the deers, stags and fallow deers who started rutting and bellowing.

The Autumn lady continued her journey and when she came by a forest, she jumped out of Wind’s pocket
onto a blackberry plant. There, she caressed its leaves with the tip of her fingers and they turned dark red.

She also asked the oak trees to drop their oaks and the chestnut trees to drop their chestnuts.
She even told the apple trees a poem that went like so:

“Way up high in the apple tree,

two little apples smile down at me.
I shook that tree just as hard as I could,
And down came the apples
And MMMM...they were good.”

Dancing and singing, the lady walked through the forest, touching the moss and the mushrooms who
stretched as they woke up happily.

Leaf by leaf and plant by plant, the lady changed the forest’s colours.

Animals got ready too! The Autumn lady smiled and welcomed cranes, robins, starlings and bustards to
Spain while she waved goodbye to swallows, bee-eaters, european rollers and swifts who were going to
other countries for the winter.

She gently sent the bears, lizards and european terrapins to sleep.

Finally, after all that work, she jumped back into Wind’s pocket. She then asked the sun to help her make
the days shorter and cooler, And sun helped her.
From time to time, Autumn himself would look at his helper, the funny little lady in the funny
little coloured clothes. Autumn would smile at her and she would smile back.

One day, the Autumn lady disappeared to let winter come but that kids, is another story.
