Bongbong Marcos Presidential Run

Former Senator Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. filed his certificate of candidacy (COC)

for president on Oct 6, 2021, seeking to succeed his father, who ruled the country for

more than two decades. Social media went abuzz on Tuesday after Senator Bongbong

Marcos announced his intention to run for president in the 2022 elections. Many people

opposed including the Campaign Against the Return of the Marcoses and Martial Law

(CARMMA), Groups Bayan and Bayan Muna. Even Vice President Leni Robredo has

stated her strong opposition to the son of late dictator Ferdinand E. Marcos running for

president. Robredo urged Filipinos to band together and prevent the Philippines from

suffering the same fate as the Marcos regime.

Marcos introduced, co-sponsored, or co-authored 121 bills in the 15th and 16th

Congresses. Only 54 of the 121 bills were signed into law (45 percent ) Among the 54

laws enacted: BBM reports that 33, or 61 percent, of the laws passed, are for declaring

holidays, renaming roads, establishing legislative districts, and commemorating tree-

planting days. Seven of these are aligned with national development priorities, but Marcos

was not the primary author of any of these significant legislations.

Bongbong, as he is affectionately known, is one of Ferdinand's three children. Ferdinand

ruled the country from 1965 to 1986, including a nine-year period under martial law, which

he imposed in 1972, before being deposed in a popular uprising. During Ferdinand's

presidency, the Marcoses were accused of stealing billions of dollars from the Filipino

people. On the 30th anniversary of the revolution in February, Benigno Aquino III

said "There are stories of people who were tortured, killed, or disappeared who until now

have yet to be found," Aquino continued

The president also criticized Bongbong for not acknowledging his father's wrongdoings.

Pres. Aquino added that “Marcos regime was not a golden age in our history”

There are many reasons why Bongbong Marcos is not qualified as a president. First, he

lied about his Educational Attainment. Rappler emailed the Oxford University

spokesperson to ask what the criteria are for special diplomas. They have yet to receive

a reply. But A student from a UK university told them that “anyone who only has a diploma

did not complete the 3-year degree course, did not take the exams, and therefore has not

been conferred a BA.” On 2015, February 24. according to his resumé, he received a

Bachelor of Arts degree from Oxford and a Masters in Business from the University of

Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business, which he attended from 1979 to 1981. As it

turns out, he did not complete the course at Wharton and thus did not receive his MBA.

But was awarded a Special Diploma in Social Studies in 1978. For more than a decade,

he has been introducing himself as an alumnus of Oxford University, wherein. He did not

finish because he failed. Someone said that why would you even vote for someone who

lied for more than a decade about his educational attainment?

Second, Bongbong Marcos sued for plunder over pork barrel scam. Based on the news

and articles of The Philippine Star, on April 6, 2016, A group calling itself the iBalik ang

Bilyones ng Mamamayan (iBBM) filed a P205-million plunder complaint, asking the Office

of the Ombudsman to investigate Sen. Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. for alleged

involvement in the pork barrel scam. Among the evidence of the iBBM is an Aug. 22,

2014 statement from Marcos’ office which admitted that he requested a municipal mayor

of General Nakar, Quezon to tap the services of the Social Development Program for

Farmers Foundation Inc. (SDPFFI) in implementing the senator’s pork barrel projects.

“These SAROs constitute part of the (Benhur) Luy files, which saw that Marcos Jr. himself

was directly involved in stealing the people’s money,” David claimed. Luy is a former

employee of Napoles who turned state witness against his former boss and the erring

lawmakers.

There are also popping video clips on social media about Miriam Defensor Santiago

saying that “If I die before I finish my six-year term. Sen. Ferdinand Marcos Jr. will be able

to fit that bill, we need somebody young and idealistic to take over” People said that

Miriam Defensor Santiago doesn’t like people who are corrupt that’s why they are voting

for Bongbong Marcos, but there’s a story that Miriam Defensor Santiago was a former

ally of Marcos in 2016, both the year MDS ran for the presidency and Marcos as Vice.

Miriam did this because it had strategic benefits to her running. Unfortunately, Bong Bong

Marcos didn't give the same energy. Instead of supporting Miriam, BBM supported

Duterte (who was then MDS's opponent in the presidency). Imee and Sandro Marcos

didn't vote for MDS as well but they are using her for BBM's presidential candidacy today.

Which is unfair because they didn't support her before. President Rodrigo Roa Duterte

himself admitted that the Marcoses supported him in his candidacy. In other words,

Marcos betrayed his ally Miriam and voted for Duterte. Marcos' son admits ballot error: “I

voted for (Davao City Mayor Rodrigo) Duterte as president, and saw the number 4 right

after, so (I) shaded that as it was my dad’s number,” he said.

In addition, his family uses public funds for excessive lifestyle. The Marcos family is

accused of using the Swiss banking system to conceal its activities by establishing bogus

foundations. Imelda Marcos, the former first lady, was convicted on corruption charges in

the mid-1990s and sentenced to a minimum of 12 years in prison, but the conviction was

overturned on appeal. But An invoice from the Bulgari boutique in New York, dated July

20, 1978, detailing jewelry purchases totaling 1.431 million US dollars made on behalf of

former Philippine First Lady Imelda Marcos by her confidential secretary Vilma Bautista.

The bill was discovered in the back of Malacanang Palace in Manila on the night the

Marcos family fled into exile in Hawaii on February 25, 1986.

In his father’s reign, based on the research study of “Human Rights Violations During The

Marcos Regime” Marcos (Father of Bongbong Marcos) launched a massive militarization

campaign to help him achieve his disciplined new society. Military membership increased

from 55,000 in 1972 to 250,000 in 1984, while the budget increased from P 608 million in

1972 to $ 8.8 billion in 1984. Military personnel, particularly his Ilocanos, were appointed

to various positions in government and civilian bureaucracy (Nepomuceno-Francisco and

Arriola 1987, 177). San Juanico Bridge connects the islands of Leyte and Samar in the

Philippines. It is also a form of torture in the Philippines: a political prisoner subjected to

the "San Juanico bridge" is forced to lie naked between two beds and is beaten and kicked

in the stomach and thighs whenever he sags or falls. Other standard procedures include

stripping, sexual abuse, electric shock, and the use of "truth serum" drugs. Hot irons are

sometimes pressed against a prisoner's bare soles; cigarettes and cigarette lighters are

frequently used to burn genitals, mouths, and eyelids. Faces are pushed into toilet bowls,

and victims' heads are submerged in water until they pass out. Perla Somonod, who was

pregnant at the time of her arrest, was forced to lie on her stomach with a block of ice on

her stomach until her baby died. A Protestant pastor who was arrested in March 1974

and is still imprisoned was forced to drink his own urine. The statistics on the scope of

human rights violations were startling. Danilo Vizmanos, a WestPoint-educated Navy

Captain turned activist, estimates the extent of suffering under martial law as follows:

7,000 torture victims, 2,000 salvaged or summarily executed, and 1,000 people

disappeared (Malanes 1999, 16). His estimate is similar to the number of legal claimants

in the Hawaii case alleging human rights violations against the Marcoses: 9,539. (Rosales

1999, 12). From 1965 to 1986, the numbers on their record were as follows: There were

2,668 arrests. There have been 306 arrests and 398 disappearances. 1,499 people were

killed or injured (Magsaysay 1999) The listings by Ninoy Aquino and Primitivo Mijares

(Aquino 1984, 2000, 89-105, 110-113; Mijares 1976, 276-324) gives the names and faces

to the different techniques of torture. Aside from deadly weapons, unassuming everyday

items like water, pliers, thumbtacks, ball pens, flatiron were used to create constant and

enduring pain that even time can hardly heal: The examples are Electric Shock, San

Juanico Bridge, Truth Serum, Russian Roulette, Beating, Pistol-Whipping, Water Cure,

Strangulation, Cigar Burns, Flat Iron burns, Pepper Torture, Animal Treatment, and

Sexual Torture.

Finally, BBM claims that his father "brought the Philippines into the modern world." That

is not correct. His father and his father's cronies pillaged the country, as the Supreme

Court has well documented. Only a few weeks ago, the Sandiganbayan ordered the

return of stolen funds. The order enforcing a 1991 agreement between Imelda Marcos

and the Philippine government to assign all properties in question to the latter. The

dictator's son has repeatedly refused to apologize, despite repeated calls for him to do

so. He has never done so and will never do so.

He cannot claim that he was too young to be involved in corruption. BBM became

chairman of the board of the Philippine Communications Satellite Corporation, a conduit

for his family's ill-gotten wealth, when he was 27 years old in 1985. Furthermore, private

foundations registered in Switzerland, for which Imelda Marcos was convicted,

specifically named Bongbong, Imee, and Irene as beneficiaries of stolen money,

according to the Sandiganbayan.
