Activity 1. Connection
Processing Questions:
1. Why do you think they are interconnected?
 Community participation, Empowerment, and Advocacy are

inseparably linked, they are different but they depend on each other to

give meaning and purpose. Participation represents action, or being

part of an action such as a decision-making process. Empowerment

represents sharing control, the entitlement and the ability to participate,

to influence decisions, as on the allocation of resources’. Furthermore,

advocacy seeks to better represent the interests of clients with limited

power to powerful individuals and social structures.

2. Why are they called community action?


 Community participation, empowerment, and advocacy is called

community action because it is about putting communities at the heart

of their own local services. Involving communities in the design and

delivery of services can help to achieve a number of objectives.

 Advocacy – helping the community to share knowledge,

skills and ideas.

 Community participation – helping the community to

support itself.

 Empowerment – is about working in ways which empower

people Are they important in community development?

3. Are they important in community development? Explain.


They are important because:
 Community Participation – Community participation paves the way

for self-development and contribution. The sense of contributing, for

instance, participation in a project which contributes to the society can

give you a sense of pleasure and meaningfulness

 Empowerment - Community empowerment works through increasing

the community's influence over the structures and policies that affect

the lived experiences of the community and its members. Increases in

influence often occur through partnerships between those in power and

other community members.

 Advocacy – Community advocacy helps people feel more enabled to

take control of their own lives and provides practical support to

overcome health and social care issues. This approach equips people

with the knowledge and skills to be their own best Advocate.
