Experiment Name: Determination of aniline point of diesel.

Abstract:
Aniline point is the minimum temperature for a complete mixing of aniline and materials such as
gasoline; used in some specifications to indicate the aromatic content of oils and to calculate
approximate heat of combustion.

Introduction:
Aniline, an organic base belonging to the phenyl amines. It is colorless, oily liquid, originally obtained
from indigo by distillation, but now largely manufactured from coal tar or nitrobenzene as a base from
which many dyes are made.

The aniline point is a physical characteristic of hydrocarbons, such as oils and refer to the minimum
temperature at which the hydrocarbon and the same amount of aniline are perfectly miscible.

The greater the aniline point, the lower the aromatics in diesel oil. Higher aniline point also indicates a
higher proportion od paraffin. At temperature below this point, a mixture of the compound and an
equal volume of aniline will not dissolve together.

Cetane number (CN) is an indicator of the combustion speed of diesel. The Cn is an important factor in
determining fuel quality. CN is measurement of combustion quality of diesel during compression
ignition. Several other measurements (density, lubricity, cold flow properties, sulfur content) determine
overall diesel fuel quality.

The Diesel Index indicates the ignition quality of fuel. Diesel fuel rating based on ignition qualities. High
quality fuel has high diesel index number.

Apparatus:
 Diesel
 Aniline
 Paraffin
 Thermometer
 Test tube
 Beaker
Methodology:
 Apparatus was cleaned and dried. Then 5 ml of aniline and 5ml of the diesel was
measured to be tested into the test tube.
 Stopper was placed into the test tube and a thermometer was inserted, making sure the bulb
did not touch the sides or bottom of the tube.
 The tube was slowly heated while stirring the mixture (stirred by moving the thermometer up
and down) until complete miscibility (the mixture becomes clear) occurred.
 Removed from heat source and continued stirring until aniline-oil mixture became cloudy.
Thermometer temperature was observed and reported aniline point in °C.
Result & Discussion:
Observing and conducting the above experiment precisely, we concluded the aniline point of diesel is
97°C.
Thermometer was not giving perfect temperature. So, there may be different aniline point that other
groups have.
Precaution:
 As aniline is poisonous, the vapor of the mixture could cause severe health damage. That’s why
mask was worn during the experiment.
 Well ventilation at the lab was secured to pass the vapor without causing any damage.
 Apron and gloves were used to restrain from direct contact.
 Water was kept away from paraffin.
