I. Background Information

Hello there! Welcome to Introduction to Philosophy of a Human Person Subject! This subject is a
philosophical investigation concerned with questions such as the status of human beings in the universe and the
purpose or meaning of human life. By studying Philosophy of Human Person, people can clarify what they
believe, and they can be stimulated to think about ultimate questions. A person can study philosophers of the past
to discover why they thought as they did and what value their thoughts may have in one's own life. Philosophy
has had enormous influence on our everyday lives. The very language we speak uses classifications derived from
philosophy. For example, the classifications of noun and verb involve the philosophic idea that there is a
difference between things and actions. If we ask what the difference is, we are starting a philosophic inquiry.

II. Learning Targets

In this lesson, you will learn the importance of Doing Philosophy and utilize different perspectives by
looking at all aspects of a situation before making a conclusion. Specifically, with the different tasks and activities
in this sheet you are expected to:

1. distinguish a holistic perspective from a partial point of view;


2. realize the value of doing philosophy in obtaining a broad perspective on life and
3. do philosophical reflection on a concrete situation from holistic perspective.

III. Essential Knowledge, Concepts and Activities

Warm-Up Activity

In a few years, you will gain new experiences in life that you may have never dreamed of. Such
experiences may excite or challenge you, while some can make you rethink your life and decisions. At your age,
you may have already asked yourself important questions about your life that cannot be directly answered through
research or education, such as “What do I want?” or “What will make me happy?” If you have already asked
yourself those big questions, then you have already engaged in philosophy.
What is Philosophy? – Is it a way of life? Why or why not? – How do you apply it in everyday life? Find out
the answers in this lesson!

Key Concepts

Philosophy (literally, love of wisdom) applied to human experience is important as this teaches us on how we ought to
live our life. It is generally defined as love of wisdom or the knowledge of things in general by their ultimate causes, so for
as reason attain to such knowledge. It is a comprehensive and critical study and analysis of experience. It is the study of
general and fundamental questions about existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind and language. In simple words, it is
a way of thinking about the world, the universe, and society. It works by asking basic questions about the nature of human
thought, the nature of the universe and the connections between them. The ideas in philosophy are often general and
abstract. Moreover, philosophy is the study of humans and the world by thinking and asking questions. It is a science and
an art. It tries to answer important questions by coming up with the answers about real things and asking “why”?

Doing Philosophy can be applied in day-to-day activities and life perspectives, because it involves evaluative process.
Doing philosophy allows a person to make better decisions and act accordingly to situations with the help of various
philosophical skills.

Philosophy as a body of knowledge provides methodologies and insights on how societal questions, such as moral
dilemmas of euthanasia or same-sex marriage, can be answered. The process of doing philosophy should NOT be
mistaken for the Filipino activity of PAMIMILOSOPO or pedantry where a person displays useless knowledge or minute
observance of small details.

In philosophy, point of view describes the perception of an event or phenomenon how exactly it is viewed.
Point of view often is shaped by an individual’s beliefs or experiences.
There are two (2) perspectives in the study of philosophy, and these two perspectives set a limit in
arriving at conclusions about a given experience and situation.
1. Partial Point of View. According to Dr. Mariano Arriola, the focus is the human person in relation to self – intellect and
will – as a unique individual but limited in his/her capacity to do good, to know and his place in society. Therefore, a
phenomenon, an event or a situation is seen from a single component or factor or causal agency. Conclusions are made
based on some considerations, factors, or situations.
Example: During the SSG Election, John voted for Camille because she was John’s childhood friend.
2. Holistic Perspective. The holistic perspective sees a broader approach at understanding a reality, event, or
phenomenon. A human person must relate oneself to others, to the society he/she lives in, and interacts with his/her
environment. Conclusions are made by looking at all aspects of the given problem and situation.
Example: On the day of the SSG Election, Eric decided to cast his vote for Amy because she possessed leadership skills,
active in her community and easy to get along with others despite her not his classmate nor friend.

Looking at the characteristics of holistic and partial points of view, it can be concluded that using a holistic
perspective is more desirable in doing philosophy than using a partial perspective. Partial points of view only
promote limited knowledge on the situation. This leads to wrong conclusions.
Learning philosophy requires learning to look into all available perspectives and work on their relationship
to come up with sound, logical, and valid conclusions. In the process, doing philosophy helps one to develop the
skill of broadly looking at the situation first before concluding anything.
Furthermore, on life perspectives, philosophy enables reflective thinking which greatly influences a
person’s view of life, challenges, and relationships. Doing philosophy directs how a person will perceive these
factors in life and how they will be faced. •In any setting, wisdom is always gained when philosophy is applied to
formulate a conclusion about a certain concern.

Key points:
 The Meaning of Philosophy and Philosophy of the Human Person Philosophy applied to human experience or
everyday life denotes the use of philosophy as an intellectual activity. Also known as philosophy in life, this
concept is important because it serves as the guiding principle on how one ought to live life.
 Importance of Philosophical Reflection Philosophical reflection is the process by which a person undergoes a
reflective state or evaluates his or her experiences first before making any related action. The use of
philosophical reflection is important as it enables thought to be looked into using a deeper, holistic perspective.
In effect, actions are directed towards greater sources of wisdom and truth.
 Human Activities Emanated from Deliberate Reflection - In the process, one can learn more about himself or
herself, including personal beliefs, ideals, or values. Previous experiences may be seen as important aspects of
making reflections because they facilitate deeper thinking and understanding of the self. Aside from knowing
the self, many other activities also emanate from reflection.
 Partial point of view focuses on specific aspects of a situation. The partial view is an important component of
analytical thinking, as an individual, focuses on certain areas or aspects of a problem in order to understand it.
 Holistic perspective considers large-scale patterns in systems. It requires an individual to have an open mindset
and ability to get the general sense or impression regarding a situation.
People tend to apply an apply an analytical perspective when looking at problems or situations. Though partial point
of view is useful, philosophy utilizes holistic perspectives in making sense of problems and issues related to the
human experience. Holistic views give rise to a more appreciative perspective about life, as we are able to look
at life in its totality.

on the environment and will not cause disaster.

8. Lorenzo condemns an artist that went viral for giving his/her opinion about the shutting down of a TV network.
9. Kent spread a gossip about a person being infected of Covid-19 without assessing the reliability of the source of
information.
10. Instead of judging every single person went viral on line, Stephanie chooses to reserve her judgment until she gets all
the facts regarding what made those people act in that matter.
