1. Mona Lisa:
 Mona Lisa was painted in the early 16th century.
 It has the highest insurance valuation for a painting ($3 billion).
 It was stolen in 1911.The theft of the Mona Lisa was a worldwide news sensation
and made the painting well known.

2. The Last Supper:


 Leonardo da Vinci started work in 1945 and it took about three years to complete
the painting.
 The last supper is painted on the wall, but it is not a fresco.
 Leonardo da Vinci used his own new technique on his future masterpiece.

3. The Creation of Adam:


 Michelangelo started painting in 1508 and it took about 4 years to complete the
entire ceiling in 1512.
 The Creation of Adam is a small part of a huge painting that covers over 500
square meters of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.
 This amazing work of art also consists of 300 figures, portraying the stories told in
the Bible.

4. The Starry Night:


 Starry Night was painted by Vincent van Gogh in an asylum.
 This painting is the “official Starry Night,” but Van Gogh already painted a similar
painting earlier.
 A study has shown that the sky in the Starry Night is a perfect representation of
how it looked like the moment he created the painting.

5. The Scream:
 The initial title of the painting was “The Scream of Nature”.
 Munch painted four different versions of The Scream.
 The Scream has been stolen twice. In 1994 and 2004.

6. The Persistence of Memory:


 The masterpiece is also known as Soft Watches, Droopy Watches, The
Persistence of Time and Melting Clocks.
 The painting made the 28-years-old artist famous.
 The actual oil-on-canvas painting measures only 9.5 inches by 13 inches.

7. Girl with a Pearl Earring:


 Johannes Vermeer didn’t date the painting, so the exact year it was created
remains unknown.
 It’s a rather small painting. The dimensions of it are only 44.5 × 39 centimeters.
 No one knows for sure who this girl in the painting is.

8. The Night Watch:


 The Night Watch has been attacked three times. In 1911, 1975 and 1990.
 The painting’s title doesn’t reflect what is depicted.
 Rembrandt was paid 1,600 guilders to complete this amazing painting, a huge
sum at the time.

9. Self-portrait without beard:


 Self-portrait without beard was painted in September 1889 in Saint-Remy-de-
Provence.
 The self-portrait was a reflection of his state.
 It is one of the most expensive paintings of all time, selling for $71.5 million in
1998 in New York City. At the time, it was the third most expensive painting ever
sold.

10. Guernica:
 Guernica wasn’t always lauded as a masterpiece.
 The painting was not always in greyscale.
 Women are the main characters in Guernica.
