Grasping one or two words is the natural first step in babies learning to speak and it was the same with
machines. DARPA put in the time—and the money—to grow their ability. Its Speech Understanding
Research project taught a thousand words to machines and brought them up to understand 90 percent
of continuously spoken speech.
