the questions that follow.

In Barangay Kalimudan, in the town of Dimatun, all the residents were very
excited and united to welcome their most awaited Ramadhan al Karim. After waqtu
Asr, Barangay Captain Aalim Abdulqahhar led the elders in looking at the moon. He
requested Councilors Alinor, Abdulmohaymin, and Alhudhari to go up the tower of
the masjid to see the moon. The other elders went to the sea to view the new moon,
and Aalim Abdulqahhar instructed them to tell him the result by the fastest means, so
that the people will be informed.
“Giving good information in the name of Allah SW is a righteous deed for
every person,” he said. The women, specially should be informed immediately since
they are in charge of the kitchen. The women of each household prepare for the
news of the moon sighting. They need to prepare complete and nutritious food for
their early pre-dawn meal (sahur).
The youth grouped themselves for the great month-long affair. One group will
be responsible for the daily cleaning of the masjid, and for the daily evening prayers
(tarawih). Another group will prepare the festive lights outside the masjid and outside
the houses. The lights will illuminate the surroundings and the paths leading to the
masjid. Others will help in the preparation and distribution of food for the evening
meal (iftar) in the masjid. Some of the teenage girls will arrange the participation of
the children in the Quran reading during the Friday congregation prayers and before
iftar.
Barangay Captain Aalim Abdulqahhar was informed that the moon was
sighted at around 5:42 pm.
Immediately, he requested the asatidz and aalim in the masjid to takbir. The
residents need to be informed of the sighting of the new moon through the takbir.
With the advent of high technology, all the barangay people were informed. The
elders went to the mosque to join the takbir, the warm welcoming of the month of
discipline, sharing food, equality, and contemplation. Everyone-old men and women,
young boys and girls, and even children-rejoice while singing: “Ahlan wa Sahlan,
Ramadhan al Karim, Ahlan wa Sahlan, Ramadhan al Karim.”
Guide questions:
1. Why were the people in Barangay Kalimudan very excited and happy?
2. What preparations were being done by 3 the people? Enumerate at least three.
3. What would signal the start of the Ramadhan?
4. Why is there a need that correct information is relayed immediately to the
people?

4
What is It

In the story above, people in Barangay Kalimudan welcome Ramadhan al

Karim very happy and excited. They clean and put festive lights outside the masjid
and houses. The women of each household prepare a complete and nutritious food
for their early pre-dawn meal (sahur). On the other hand, men and elders led by
Aalim Abdulqahhar went up to the tower of masjid and some to the sea to see the
moon. Seeing the moon is very important as it signal the start of Ramadhan. Thus,
disseminating the correct information of the moon sighting is also important in the
preparation of the coming of Ramadhan al-Karim.

This is a scenario of every muslims around the world in welcoming Ramadhan al

Karim. Cleanliness becomes norms not just in their houses and masjid but also in
their body. Eating nutritious foods is also important in Ramadhan as preparation for
Sawm. Performing Sawm during Ramadhan provides physical cleansing.

SAWM is an Arabic word for fasting. It is about keeping yourself away from all or
some kinds of food or drink, especially as a religious observance.

RAMADHAN is the 9th month in hijrah calendar. It is the month of fasting and
blessing. The month of self-regulation and self-training.
Fasting in Ramadhan could be used for medical reasons, such as weight
management. It also rests the digestive tract and lowers lipids. Abstinence from
water in Ramadhan allows concentration of all fluids within the body producing slight
dehydration. It provides a break in the cycle of rigid habit or overindulgence. By that,
fasting gives physical cleansing of our body. This is one of the virtues in performing
sawm.

They agreed to have a ten-minute Muhadharah every Monday to Thursday after the

Each class advisers were selected to do the 10-minute Muhadharah and
Quran reading. Parents were invited every morning to see their children in their

was excited for the coming big event. This was the month-long clebration of
Ramadhan al Karim.

the school and their respective children. They attended the Monday-Thursday

vision of building a good future for their children. The parents felt their responsibilities
