CAPACITORS

capacitor, device for storing

electrical energy, consisting of
two conductors in
close proximity and insulated
from each other. A simple
example of such a storage device
is the parallel-plate capacitor. If
positive charges with
total charge +Q are deposited on
one of the conductors and an
equal amount of negative charge
−Q is deposited on the second
conductor, the capacitor is said
to have a charge Q.

CAPACITANCE

capacitance, property of an
electric conductor, or set of
conductors, that is measured
by the amount of separated
electric charge that can be
stored on it per unit change in
electrical potential. Capacitance
also implies an associated
storage of electrical energy
.
PARALLEL PLATE
CAPACITOR

When two parallel plates are

connected across a battery, the
plates are charged and an
electric field is established
between them, and this setup
is known as the parallel plate
capacitor.

Let the two plates are kept parallel to

each other separated be a
distance ‘d’ and
cross-sectional area of each plate
is ‘A’.

Electric field by a single thin plate

E′=2ϵoσ

Total electric field between the plates

E=2ϵoσ+2ϵoσ

Or E=ϵoσ

Or E=AϵoQ
Potential difference between the
plates
V=Ed

⟹ V=AϵoQd

Capacitance
C=VQ

Thus we get capacitance of parallel

plate capacitor

C=dAϵo
Effect of dielectric on
capacitance of
parallel plate
capacitor
1. When dielectric is completely
filled between the plates

Let the space between the plates of

capacitor is filled with a dielectric of
relative permittivity Er. The presence
of dielectric reduces the electric
intensity by Er times and thus the
capacitance increases by Er times.

2. When dielectric is partially

filled between the plates

Let the space between the plates of

capacitor is filled with a dielectric
of relative permittivity Er. The
presence of dielectric reduces the
electric intensity by Er times and
thus the capacitance increases by
Er times.

3. When different dielectric

slabs are filled between the
plates
When the slabs of dielectric
constants - K1, K2, K3, K4..... and
respective thickness t1,t2,t3,t4,….. is
placed in the entire space between
the parallel-plates, then the
capacitance between the plates

C=ϵ∘Ad−(t1+t2+t3+....)+(t1K1+t2K2+t3K3+.
......)C=ϵ∘Ad−(t1+t2+t3+....)+(t1K1+t2K2+t3
K3+.......)

But d=t1+t2+t3+....d=t1+t2+t3+
....

C=ϵ∘A(t1K1+t2K2+t3K3+.....)C=ϵ∘A(t1K1+t2
K2+t3K3+.....)

EXPERIMENT
OBJECTIVE : To determine the
dielectric constant permittivity of
air, εo using a parallel plate
capacitor.

APPARATUS : A parallel-plate
capacitor, Digital Multimeter
(DMM), Connecting wires, Two
Capacitors (C1and C2), Circuit
board, Graph paper.
RESULTS : Air has a dielectric
constant of ‘1’ , i.e. equal to the
permittivity of vacuum.
