INTRODUCTION .
The earliest records dealt with in this volume are the Court Minutes of the
East India Company , which , with a few gaps, cover the whole period from the
establishment of the Company in 1600 to the transfer of its authority to the
Crown in 1858. The Home Letters received and sent, and the References to and
Reports of the Committee of Correspondence, date from the early years of the
eighteenth century. The correspondence with India is practically continuous
from about the middle of that century ; for earlier dates , reference should
be made to the “ List of Factory Records” ( India Office, 1897) , though it
may be mentioned here that for a period of about 40 years from 1703 very
few letters from India have survived . Abstracts of them, however, are in
existence (see pages 19 and 32 ).
The “ Parchment Records " (page 78 ), consisting mainly of Charters,
Warrants, Letters Patent, &c. , date from the foundation of the Company,
and are of considerable interest.
A number of miscellaneous volumes have been grouped together under
the headings “ Home Miscellaneous " (page 92) and Miscellaneous
Military Records (page 216), indexes to which will be found respectively
on pages xvii. and xxvi.
The classification of a large body of Records, such as those catalogued in
this volume , must necessarily follow, to a great extent, the system of
registration in use at the time when the documents came into existence.
The main principle adopted by the East India Company, and , in a certain
degree, by the India Office from 1859 to 1879, was that ea ch file of corre
spondence should be resolved into its component parts ( Letter, Despatch,
Home Letter out &c.) , and that each such part should be bound in a series
with otlier similar documents. Thus we find separate series of Letters,
Despatches, Home Letters sent, Home Letters received , &c. The Board of
Control adopted the same principle, but divided their copies of Letters and
Despatches into series according to the department from which they
emanated, such as Public , Financial, & c. These series, known as “ Board's
Copies, are included in the India Office Records, and consist of duplicate
copies of documents in the Court's set of Letters and Despatches. In 1880
the Registry system of the India Office was revolutionised, the principle
being adopted that each letter should be retained in a file with a draft of its
answer, and any other documents to which it may have given rise. For this
reason the year 1879 was considered a suitable date at which to end the
present catalogue, though in one or two cases it will be seen that a series
has been prolonged beyond that period .
For the sake of convenience, it has long been the custom in the India
Office to describe a Government communication from India as a “ Letter. "
and one to India as a “ Despatch.” This practice has been adhered to in the
following pages.

in the following works published by the India Office, viz . , “ List of Factory
Records,” “ List of Marine Records," various Lists of Proceedings of the
Governments in India, and the “ Classified List of Reports and other
Publications.” Parliamentary and Geographical Records also are excluded .
