List of commonly used irregular verbs in French

Exercice: look up the present tense of the following irregular verbs

The big four


1. Être (to be)
2. Avoir (to have)
3. Faire (to make/do)
4. Aller (to go)

Modal verbs
5. Vouloir (to want)
6. Pouvoir (can, to be able to)
7. Devoir (must, to have to)
8. Savoir (to know)

Irregular -ER verbs


9. Appeler (to call)  same for rappeler (to call back) and jeter (to throw)
10. Manger (to eat)  same for bouger (to move), corriger (to correct) and voyager (to
travel)

Irregular -IR verbs


11. Tenir (to keep/to hold)
12. Venir (to come)
 Same for devenir (to become), obtenir (to obtain) and appartenir (to belong to)

13. Ouvrir (to open)  Same for découvrir (to discover) and couvrir (to cover). These
verbs are conjugated like an -er verb!

14. Voir (to see)
15. Recevoir (to receive)
 Same endings, other stems!

Irregular -RE verbs


16. Prendre (to take)
17. Apprendre (to learn)
 Same for comprendre (to understand) and surprendre (to surprise)

18. Rire (to laugh)


19. Dire (to say)
20. Écrire (to write)
21. Lire (to read)
22. Croire (to believe)
23. Boire (to drink)
24. Battre (to hit)
25. Mettre (to put)  Same for admettre (to admit), permettre (to permit) and promettre
(to promise)
