Introduction-

An alloy is a homogenous mixture of two or more metals

or a metal and a non metal. They are generally harder
than their components with reduced malleability and
ductility.
Alloys are prepared to enhance certain characteristics of
the constituent’s metals as per requirements.
In this project, we shall quantatively analyze the chemical
composition of alloy brass.

Aim of the experiment-

To analyze sample of brass quantitavely.

General objective-
This project is being carried out with a view to increase
the appreciation of alloy analysis as an important branch
of the hands on laboratory in understanding the general
procedure of quantities analysis of an unknown.
Specific objective
In this project we shall analysis the constituents of brass.
Materials required-
1 Brass
2 China dish
3 Filtration apparatus
4 Nitric acid
5 Hydrogen sulphide gas
6 Ammonium chloride
7 Dil. Hydrochloric acid

Theory-
Brass contains cu and Zn both dissolves in nitride acid
where they converted into their corresponding nitrates.
Cu dissolved in H2S to give black P.P.T. of CuS. It is
filtered to get the solution zinc sulphide. It precipitates
out in the form of ZnCl2 in an ammonical solution of
Ammonium Chloride and then treated with potassium
ferrocyanide to get a bluish white P.P.T. of Zn [Fe(CN)6].
Details of the procedure-
A small piece of brass was placed in a china dish and
dissolves in a minimum quantity of 50% Conc. HNO3.
The solution was heated to obtain a dry residue. The
residue was dissolve in dil. HCl and then H2S gas is
passed and a black P.P.T. was observed.
The solution was filtered and the P.P.T. was dissolved in
NH4OH and Ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) solutions were
added and then H2Swas passed. A dull grey P.P.T. was
separated and dissolved in dil. HCl followed by addition
of potassium ferrocyanide.
A bluish white P.P.T confirms the presence of Zn.
