Rudder Angle Indicator Equipment
with Amplifier

The rudder angle indicator equipment provides continuous and analog indication of the
steering gear's actual or desired rudder position (according to application). The kind of
the indicated rudder angle depends on the installation of the feedback unit (pump with
constant delivery: mounting on the rudder stock; pump with variable delivery: mounting
on the positioning element of the steering gear).

The individual rudder angle indicators can be installed in any place of the ship you want.
The equipment is suitable for sea-going ships of any type and size.

Due to the modular design of the equipment, several system configurations can be per-
formed dependent on the application concerned.

Special features of the rudder angle indicator equipment:

- Rudder angle indicators for inside and outside application
- High accuracy of indication and reproducibility
- Easy installation

The central part of the equipment is the amplifier. It permits a maximum of 12 rudder
angle indicators to be connected, optionally to be assigned to the 5 outputs. With more
than one indicator per output, an additional junction box is required.

The sensor of the rudder angle is the Feedback Unit, Type 101-528, that is coupled with
the rudder blade (actual course) or with the positioning element (desired course) and
connected to the amplifier.

The power supply of the equipment is ensured by 24V DC from the ship's mains (emer-
gency supply).

1.2 Construction and Principle of Operation

Amplifier, Type 139-147

Fia. 1-2: Amplifier

All electronic elements as well as the terminals of the amplifier are arranged on a PCB.
This PCB is located in a casing that can be mounted on rails. A transparent plastic hood
protects the elements from mechanical damage. The amplifier is short-circuit-proof.

The amplifier comprises two trimming potentiometers. One of them (R7 "SCALE") en-
sures adjustment of the slope of the feedback unit for the indication scaling, the other
(R6 "OFFSET") permits slight midships inaccuracies to be compensated that might oc-
cur on mounting the feedback unit.

The supply voltage of 24V DC is passed on in the amplifier via the fuse E l (2A, slow) for
illuminating the rudder angle indicators. By means of two Zener diodes, a reference
ground is formed between the poles of +24V and OV. To this reference ground, -8.2V or
+8.2V are internally generated and fed each to a voltage regulator that stabilizes the
voltage for -5V or +5V, resp.

With these stabilized voltages, the feedback potentiometer is supplied. The rudder angle
signal of the feedback potentiometer is processed by means of a two-stage operational
amplifier (amplification and inversion) and passed on to the connected rudder angle indi-
cators. Readiness for operation of the amplifier is signalized by a LED.

mers ensure an individual adjustment by approx. 250% of the luminosity.

A ATTENTION:
Dimming and functional check by means of the Cen-
tral Dimmer, Type 118-061, are not provided for the
Rudder Angel Indicator, Type 136-058 !

Each central dimmer can deliver a current of 1A as a maximum for the scale illumination
of the rudder angle indicators.

For detailed information on the central dimmer refer to Description No. 2307E.

1.2.16 Feedback Unit, Type 101-528

Fia. 1-15: Feedback Unit

The feedback unit is located in a casing. The transmitter shaft is mechanically connected
with the rudder stock or with the positioning element of the steering gear. The actual or
desired position of the rudder blade is picked off by an additional precision potentiometer
which is connected via cable with the amplifier.

The rudder movement imported to the drive shaft of the feedback unit by coupling, lever
or sprocket wheel is passed on by the drive spur gear in the feedback unit to the preci-
sion potentiometer for the rudder angle indicator equipment. This potentiometer receives
a approx. k10V DC power supply from the amplifier and produces a voltage dependent
on the rudder angle and that is fed to the amplifier.

For detailed information on the feedback unit see Description No. 2167E.

2 Operating Instructions

2.1 Safety Notes

2.1.1 General Information

Instructed service personnel only is permitted to open the devices or desks. The service
personnel must observe all safety measures in order to ensure that no damage might
occur to personnel or devices.

Safety regulation:
As a matter of principle, the system is to be made dead when installation work is
performed on the equipment as well as during disassembly/assembly of compo-
nents or during alteration of the circuitry.

Checks to be made before Putting into Operation

For correct functioning of the Rudder Angle lndicator Equipment, the following power
supply is required: 24V DC *20%.

Checks to be made before Departure

By means of the ship's steering control system, the rudder is successively to be brought
into the positions of
- midship
- hard to port and
- hard to starboard
and the corresponding indication is to be checked on the rudder angle indicators. Sys-
tem test to be performed according to Section 2.2.2.

Edition: 04. June 1998 2- 1 2343El139-147.DOC012

Operating the Rudder Angle lndicator Equipment

Operation of the Rudder Angle lndicator Equipment is restricted to
- adjusting the brightness of the indicator illumination
- system test (only when a central dimmer is included in the equipment).

A ATTENTION:
Dimming and functional check by means of the Cen-
tral Dimmer, Type 118-061, are not provided for the
Rudder Angel Indicator, Type 136-058!

Brightness Control
The brightness of the indicator illumination is adjusted by means of the dimmer poten-
tiometer. If use is made of the Central Dimmer, Type 118-061 (desk mounting), bright-
ness control is performed via the keys:

m "Dim.-" the brightness is being reduced,

Rm "Dim.+" the brightness is being increased.

System Test
On using the Central Dimmer, Type 118-061, the function of the rudder angle indicator
equipment can be checked.

7 Putting into Operation

Power Supply and Voltage Adaptation

The 24V DC supply from the main fuse board (>4A), with ONIOFF switch must be con-
nected to the terminals L2.1 ( 2 4 4 and L2.2 ( 0 4 of the amplifier.

Adjusting the Feedback Potentiometer

The feedback potentiometer (5kOhm -.I
0%) is located in the feedback unit (101-528).

1) The feedback potentiometer is to be connected to the terminals

L1.9 (port & negative signal),
L1.ll (starboard & positive signal), and
L1.10 (wiper).

2) Adjust the potentiometer with exact midship position of the rudder: turn its casing in
such a way that the resistance measured between the potentiometer connections 1
and 2 is just the same as between the potentiometer connections 2 and 3.

Edition: 04. June 1998 7-1 2343Ei139-147.DOC012

Rudder Angle Indicator Equipment

Adjustment

- Put the rudder exactly to midship position.

- In case of small deviations of the feedback

potentiometer in the rudder position transmit-
ter unit, adjust the indication of the measuring
instruments for zero by means of the trimming
potentiometer R6 (1) "OFFSET'.

- Put the rudder hard to port. Adjust the actual

position of the rudder blade by means of the
trimming potentiometer R7 (2) "SCALE on
the indication of the measuring instrument.

- Compare the indication also for hard-to-star-

board rudder position.

Note:
In case of deviations, it is recommended to enter into a
compromise for scale adjustment (maybe non-linearity
in the drive of the rudder position transmitter unit!).

Connecting the Central Dimmer

The central dimmer is to be connected as follows:

Amplifier Central dimmer

Terminal L1.l (OUT 24V) L1.3 (+24V)
Terminal L1.2 (OUT OV) L1.4 (OV)

As the central dimmer offers connecting possibilities for two indicating units only, a fur-
ther terminal strip must be provided, if more devices are used.

Output terminals on the central dimmer:

L1.9andL1.10: 8...24V
L1.ll and L1.12: OV
Bring internal jumper to position A).
