Research 8

Research
• is defined as a systematic inquiry that involves
collection of related data, recording of critical
information, analyzing and interpreting these data
to create either new knowledge or validate an
existing theory in accordance to the recognized
standards. Generally, defining research may be
based on how it will be used or how it is
conducted. It is derived from the French word
“recercher” which means to search.
• In high school, research opens the door to
discover new ideas, trends and phenomenon.
Learners are taught to develop analytical skills
that would pave the way to acquiring proper in-
depth analysis over a strange event or situation.
Being taught of how to distinguish what is and
supposed to investigate and the problem or
questions that demand further inquiry or
investigation is another skill to be developed
among learners.
Characteristics of
Research
• EMPIRICAL – based on direct experiences or observation.
• LOGICAL – based on procedures or principles.
• CYCLICAL – starts and ends with a problem.
• ANALYTICAL – uses proven analytical procedure and
methods in gathering data.
• REPLICABILITY – involves trial and error scheme before
results become valid and conclusive.
• CRITICAL – shows precise judgment for a valid and
conclusive results.
• SYSTEMATIC – presence of steps or procedures that are
arranged sequentially.
• OBJECTIVE – not based on guess work but a product of
extensive investigations, involving observations, experimentations
and analysis in order to gather conclusions
Why is research important?
Importance of
Research

•Research is an integral
part of our lives.
Importance of
Research
• Research helps us to answer questions, solve
problems and make decisions.
• It also aids us to acquire deeper understanding
about a situation or a problem.
• It allows us to identify and see the cause and
effects of a phenomenon or a greater extent
discover new things and ideas
Importance of
Research
• The discovery of drugs that could cure tuberculosis
has been made possible through research. Before,
the said disease claimed many lives and so
scientists and medical experts performed a series
of investigations and experiments that paved the
way to collecting, analyzing and interpreting the
data. With thorough observations, the Bacille
Calmette-Guérin (BCG) was finally completed and
had been administered to small children and
infants.
Importance of
Research
• High school students take research to help them
develop as critical thinkers, good communicators
and effective analytical learners. More so, they are
given the opportunity to become researchers who
work in a lab, handling various apparatus, meet
other “experts” and utilize tools for data analysis
and interpretations to have conclusive results.
