Number Sequence

• A number sequence is a list of numbers that are

linked by a rule. If you work out the rule, you can
work out the next numbers in the sequence.

• Number sequence is a progression or an ordered

list of numbers governed by a pattern or rule.
Numbers in a sequence are called terms.
Number Sequence
1. A number sequence is formed by a set of numbers.
These numbers, known as the terms of the
sequence, are governed by a specific rule.

2. The general term T , of a number sequence can

be represented by an algebraic expression.
Example:

For this sequence ,the general term is:

𝑻𝒏 = 2n - 1
Types of Sequences
• Arithmetic Sequence:
An arithmetic sequence is a sequence in which the difference
between each consecutive term is constant. Simply, an
arithmetic sequence has a common difference constant.
For example:
1) 1, 2, 3, … Common Difference: +1
2) 50, 40, 30, … Common Difference: -10

• Geometric Sequence:
A geometric sequence is a sequence where the ratio
between two consecutive terms is constant.
For example:
1) 2, 4, 8, 16, … Common Ratio: x 2
2) 100, 50, 25, … Common Ratio: ÷ 2

the difference between the difference between
the numbers is always the numbers is not
constant. always constant but the
ratio between the terms
is always constant

Q#14. The following diagrams shows a sequence of tiling
patterns. The shape of each tile is a 1 cm by 1 cm square.

(a) Copy and complete the table below

Figure 1 2 3 4 5 6

No of black squares (b) 1 2 3 4 5 6

No of white squares (w) 3 5 7 9 11 13

Area of whole figure (b+w) 4 7 10 13 16 19

Perimeter of whole fig 10 12 14 16 18 20

(cm)
(b) Find
i) The number of white squares in Figure 9
Number of white squares in Figure 9 = 9 × 2 + 1
= 19
ii) The perimeter of Figure 9
Perimeter of Figure 9 = 26 cm
iii) The number of white squares in Figure n, giving your answer in terms of n
Tn= a +(n-1)d
=3+(n-1)2
= 3+2n-2
Number of white squares in Figure n = = 2n + 1
iv) The perimeter of the whole Figure n, giving your answer in terms of n
Tn= a +(n-1)d
= 10+(n-1)2
= 10+2n-2
Perimeter of Figure n = 2n + 8
= (2n + 8) cm
