General Education Learning Outcomes
(GELOs)

6
GELO Framework
• These 6 GELOs provide a framework for
structuring reflection to construct UePortfolio.

7
GELO Framework
GELO 1: Knowledge
Demonstrate an understanding of how knowledge is acquired within
and across different disciplinary domains, and how it applies to
aspects of their own lives and experiences as a future professional
and citizen.

GELO 2: Application
Apply a broad range of attitudes and skills, including those relating
to the seven GILOs, different kinds of thinking and communication,
to inquire into various academic and practical issues.

GELO 3: Judgments
Make good judgements and ethical decisions, based on values and
standards which are sensible and reasonable.
8
GELO Framework
GELO 4: Expression
Express their own ideas clearly and confidently after critically
inquiring into and reflecting on various theories, perspectives,
stances and experiences.

GELO 5: Awareness
Show that they are aware of local, regional and global issues,
and construct informed and thoughtful responses to these
issues.

GELO 6: Engagement
Demonstrate intellectual and civic engagement through active
participation in and reflection on various co-curricular, service,
and experiential learning activities.
9
GELO 1: Knowledge
• What is knowledge?
- Different types of knowledge
- Its difference from information and opinion
• Knowledge could be seen as a set of criteria
(like a window/lens) for reflecting on what
we have studied.

10
GELO 2: Application
• How to apply what we have as knowledge
from the metaphysical world into the
material world?
• What/how could be applied amongst all we
have studied?

11
GELO 3: Judgments
• An example: Sport referees make informed
judgment based on their expertise.
- The target of judgment is a group of people.
- Why judging by experts but not the crowd?
• What is to be judged?
Targets and judging criteria

12
GELO 4: Expression
• What do we stand on and respond to
different scenarios given our prior knowledge
and judgment criteria?
• What are the most effective ways of
expression to convey your reflection and
judgment? How to find them?

13
GELO 5: Awareness
• Why do we approach our prior knowledge as
such?
• How to generalize our reflection and
judgment from the scope of personal to
social and global?

14
GELO 6: Engagement
⚫ Why is engagement important to personal,
social and professional development?

⚫ How to engage yourself in learning? Any

examples you can draw from your university
study?
