CRYOPROTECTANT
• Substance used to protect biological tissue from freezing damage.
• Also used to preserve living materials in the study of Biology and to preserve food products.
Permeating Agent: Glycerol and Dimethyl Sulfoxide
Non-Permeating Agent: Sucrose
Women who want to use their eggs to become mothers have the option to have their eggs or embryos frozen until
the time they deem fit to have children. Some even prefer egg freezing to embryo freezing for religious or ethical reasons.
Some wish to preserve younger eggs now for future use. Freezing eggs at a younger age might help them get pregnant when
they're ready.
This also allows a man to preserve his fertility by using his sperm at a later date or to give an infertile couple, an
infertile individual, or a lesbian couple a chance to conceive.
A woman’s prime is at 16-28 years of age; but the mid-reproductive years of 20-38 is good, too. Older eggs from
39-44 have a smaller chance of pregnancy, so getting it done earlier would generally be best.
