Part I. Situation/Scenario/Setting

Malnutrition, a preventable yet persisting problem, hinders students from

achieving their full potential. Correct food is the fuel necessary to get through a normal
day. Some students who do not have enough money for food attend classes with an empty
stomach or choose junk food as an alternative.

UNICEF says that “even short-term hunger and wrong food can adversely affect a
child’s ability to learn.” Concentration, critical thinking, creativity, and even their social
abilities may be negatively affected. Instead of focusing on class activities, they may also
be too distracted by pangs of hunger related to incorrect diet.

Part II. The Intervention (for Action Research)/Findings and Insights (for Basic
Research)

The 2021-2022 National Achievement Test (NAT) results shows the decreasing
trend of El Salvador City National High School’s Mean Percentage Score (MPS).
Among high school juniors, MPS for 2019 is 69.80%, followed by 67.40% in the year
2020 and 65.40% for the school year 2021-2022. There is a great difference in the
decrease of its score every year.

Poor nutrition, however, is not the sole reason behind these test scores. Knowing
that there will be activities for wellness, students will be more encouraged and will have
the eagerness in going to school every day. Having the knowledge on what to consume,
the students will have strength and will to do activities that are expected to them.
Moreover, knowing that the end product of “Wellness” is their total wellbeing, a healthy
person will have a healthy mindset.

Part III. Summary

Based on the responses from the Grade 9 undernourished students regarding low
academic performances it has been found out that food is their main problem. Because of
this, the researchers thought of a way to if not eliminate, at least, lessen the problems on
malnourishment, Hence, “Wellness in School” was implemented to address the said
nutrition problem.

Good nutrition is important to supporting growth and maximizing learning potential. Due
to this research, the researchers are becoming increasingly educated on the role of
nutrition on one’s body and mind ability to grow as a person.

Data of results are yet to follow.
