Micro Catboat

Project by Paolo Lodigiani, Matteo Costa and Enrico Macera

INTRODUCTION
The boat was born from the request of a customer who is already the owner of a Charles W. Wittholz
catboat and who wanted to have a tender in tone with his boat. We have therefore designed a small
drift of only 2.6 meters with a simple and elegant line, which can be armed with the Optimist sail.
The hull has a round bottom and is made with the Strip Planking technique. Thanks to the
central bench in the cockpit, the Micro Catboat can be used as a sailing tender.

FEATURES
Length FT 2.60 m
Max beam 1.25 m 40
Hull weight kg 120/180
kg
Displacement (under way) 3.2 sqm

ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS
1. CONSTRUCTION OF THE ASSEMBLY LADDER
Arrange the side members, sleepers and legs according to the scheme described in table 3.
Check the correct alignment of all the elements. If necessary, add diagonal reinforcement strips
between the side members and legs. All elements are fixed with self-tapping screws 6x60 mm.

Trace and cut the sixths according to the dimensions indicated in table 4.
Cut the joints for the keel and for the bow straight.
Apply the sixths to the legs of the mounting rail aligning them with the water line WL.
See table 3 for details.
Check for correct transverse and longitudinal alignment.
Apply the transom with the relative expanding agents.
Apply the bow straight by inserting it between the sixth1 and the triangular support installed on
the sixth1. See table 3 for details.

2. APPLICATION OF THE PARAMETER

Apply the keel to the mounting slipway, from the transom and the bow stem.
It is recommended to protect the joints and edges of the sixths with packing tape to avoid
sticking the pieces to the mold.

3. APPLICATION OF THE BAND LISTELS

Before applying the strips of the quartabone plating, the keel and the bow to allow the starting
of the plating.
Apply the strips to the mold starting from the boundary line of the deck until reaching the keel
line.
We recommend reading the book "Modern construction of wood boats" by Paolo
Lodigiani.

4. LAMINATION OF THE HULL

Carefully sand any steps of the planking to allow correct lamination of the glass fiber.

Apply the skeg to the plating with a suitable creasing of epoxy resin loaded with thickener.
This operation can also be performed after lamination of the hull, taking care to sandpaper
the portion of fabric occupied by the skeg.
Laminate a layer of fiberglass fabric on the outside of the planking by applying bands across the
keel line. Overlap each portion of fabric with an overlap of at least 5 cm.

Thoroughly wet the fabric with liquid epoxy resin, avoiding the formation of air bubbles.

Apply the Peel Ply if required.

After 24 hours remove the peel ply and smooth with sandpaper 400.

5. OPENING OF THE CRANK CASE

Cut the hole for the keel box. The front face of the centreboard case is 1275 mm from the bow.

For the dimensions of the case see tables 3 and 7.

6. ROTATION OF THE HULL

Turn the hull over to continue applying bulkheads and additional reinforcements.
Before carrying out this operation, make a cradle on which to rest the boat.
It is advisable to use the dimensions of the sixths 2 and 6 to obtain the saddles. Remember that the
thickness of the planking must be added to the external profile of the sixths.
Apply the saddles to two longitudinal side members.

7. DRAWING AND CUTTING OF THE PANELS ON PLYWOOD

Refer to table 4 for dimensions.

8. CUTTING OF ALL PARTS

Cut the parts along the perimeter lines.

9. PREPARATION OF THE BOARDS

Apply all expanding reinforcements E to the bulkheads and transom with epoxy resin. See table 5
for details.
Cut the joints for the longitudinal reinforcements.
After the epoxy resin is dry (24 hours) quartabare the profile of the bulkheads for the correct insertion
in the hull.
Check dry assembly before gluing.

10. APPLICATION OF THE BOARDS

Install the bulkheads in the positions indicated in table 3.
Laminate the 8 cm fiberglass tape along the perimeter of the bulkheads on the plywood side
without blowing agents.

11. APPLICATION OF LONGITUDINAL REINFORCEMENTS

Apply the internal rubbing pad R2 and the external one
R3 Apply the current R5. This reinforcement runs from the transom to just beyond bulkhead 3 (it
is aligned with the bench). It serves as a bonding surface for the stern bench and the center bench.

Apply the central reinforcement of the aft bench R7.

12. REALIZATION AND APPLICATION OF THE DERIVATIVE CASE

It is advisable to make the crate outside the boat and then insert it into the hull. Paint the inner faces
with liquid resin before closing the case. Refer to table 7 for dimensions.

Note: the keel box has a height exceeding the necessary dimension so that it protrudes from the hull
in order to be trimmed later.
Apply R7 reinforcements.
Assemble the stem as per drawing. Table 7.

13. APPLICATION OF LOCALIZED REINFORCEMENTS

Apply the reinforcements for the R6 deck fittings.
Apply the mast foot. Refer to tables 5 and 6.

14. APPLICATION OF BENCHES

To make the benches, cut out the 12 mm CM panels as per drawing. Table 8.
Before proceeding with the cut, take and check the measurements in place.
The central bench has a hole for the drift to pass through.
Machine Translated by Google

15. APPLICATION OF THE DECK

To make the blanket, cut out the 6 mm CM panel as shown in the drawing. Table 8.
Before proceeding with the cut, take and check the measurement in place.
The deck is glued under the longitudinal reinforcement R2 and reaches just beyond the bulkhead 2.
A solid wood head cover is provided to protect the plywood head. Refer to table 6.

Drill the hole for the tree coaming.

Before applying the deck, install the M2 mast coaming consisting of a PVC pipe with a
diameter of 60/65 mm.

16. REALIZATION OF THE PAGLIOLO

The floor is made with 12 cm and 12 mm thick solid wood planks joined by small floors.
Refer to tables 6 and 8.

17. REALIZATION OF THE RUDDER AND THE RUDDER CASE

Make the rudder and the rudder case following the drawings on table 7.

18. ARRANGEMENT OF HARDWARE

See table 9 for details.
The Micro Catboat is designed to be armed with Optimist equipment.
