An instructor surveyed her class of 40 students and found that all of them either watched TV or
surfed the internet last evening. The number of students who watched TV but did not surf the
internet was 10. The number who surfed the internet but did not watched TV was 16. Find the
number who did both

Watched the TV Surfed the internet

10 14 16

Total 40 students
No. who did both= 40-10-16
=14

In a class of 30 students all of them are either female or smokers, while only 5 are female and
smokers. If there are 12 male smoker in the class then how many female non-smoker in class

13 5 12

female smoker

Total 30 students
No. Of female non-smoker= 30-12-5
=13

Absolute value and distance

Mailing package. The post office will accept only packages for which the length plus the “girth”
(distance around) is no more than 108 inches. Thus for the package in the figure, we must have

L+2( x + y)≤ 108

a) Will the post office accept a package that is 6 in wide, 8 in deep and 5 ft. Long?
12(5)+2(6+ 8)≤ 108
88 ≤ 108
Yes

b) Will the post office accept a package that has a measure of 2 ft by 2 ft by 4 ft

12(2)+ 2[(2 ∗12)+(4 ∗12)]≤ 108

168 ≤108
No

c) What is the greatest acceptable length for a package that has a square base measuring 9 in by 9 in
L+2(w +h)=108
L+2(9+ 9)=108
L+2(18)=108
L+36=108
L=72∈¿ 6 ft

Operations on Polynomials
Volume of a Box. An open box is constructed from a 6 in. By 10 in sheet of cardboard by cutting a
square piece from each corner and then folding up the sides, as shown in the figure. The volume of
the box is
V =x (6 − 2 x )(8 −2 x)

A. Explain how the expression for V is obtained

B. Expand the expression for V. What is the degree of the resulting polynomial
C. Find the volume when x=1 and when x=2

a. V=LWH
V =x (8− 2 x )(6 −2 x)
V =x ( 48 −28 x+ 4 x 2)
2 3
V =48 x − 28 x +4 x degree is 3

c V 1=1( 8− 2)(6− 2)
V 1=24 in3
V 2=2(8− 2)( 6 −2)
V 2=16 in3

2. The building code in a certain town requires that a house be at least 10 ft from the boundaries of
the lot. The buildable area(or building envelope) for a rectangular lot shown in the figure is given by
A=( x −20)( y − 20)
a. Explain how the expression for A is obtained
b. Expand to express A as a polynomial in x and y
c. A contractor has choice of purchasing one of two rectangular lots each having the same area. One
lot measures 100 ft by 400 ft: the other measures 200 ft by 200 ft. Which lot has the larger building
envelope

a. A= LW
A=(x −20)( y − 20)
b. A=xy − 20 y − 20 x +400 Using foil method (multiply first term, outside terms, inside terms and
last terms)
c. A=(200 −20)(200 − 20)
A1=32, 400 ft.

A2=(100 −20)( 400− 20)

A2=30,400
