Horse Power
By: B.Sc Mech. Eng. Aly A.Fatah
Horsepower:
The name came from the work horse can do in one second.
We have:
1. Indicated horsepower.
2. Brake horse power.
Indicated horsepower is the power developed in the cylinders of
an engine as calculated from the average pressure generated from
burning a certain amount of fuel of a specific calorific value, It
depends on:
The piston area.
The number of working strokes per minute.
1 Horsepower (HP) = 0.745.7 Watts.
= 0.7457 Kilowatt
In simple words, one horsepower is the power that can lift
a MASS of 550 pound a distance of ONE foot in ONE second.
In reality, we get brake horsepower on fly wheel which converts
to engine, in simple terms, torque is the engine's rotational force.
It differs from horsepower as it refers to the amount of work an
engine can exert, while horsepower defines how quickly that
work can be delivered and known as pulling power.
Brake horsepower is the net power that we can get on engine
flywheel, or we can say it is the net horsepower after losses.
Brake (BHP) = Indicated horsepower (IHP) – Losses
2. Mechanical losses:
Friction between moving parts.
Engine Blow – by.
Compression losses.
Engine efficiency = Brake Horse power ÷ Indicated
Horsepower X 100
