INCROQUAT™ CTC

CTC 30
Cetrimonium Chloride

INCROQUAT CTC-30 is one in a series of quaternary ammonium compounds that make up the INCROQUAT Range.
As a range, the INCROQUATS are highly substantive and powerful cationic conditioners that impart excellent
conditioning and softening effects and confer outstanding lubricity. Their use in conditioners and cream rinses
improves both wet and dry combing and reduces flyaway to give hair better manageability. As cationics, they are used
primarily in conditioning products, rather than in shampoos. Because they are also surface active agents, they display
some foaming, wetting and rinsing action.

As a class, quaternary ammonium compounds are a group of materials that contain a tetra-substituted nitrogen,
meaning they always carry a positive charge, regardless of pH. As a result, they exhibit high substantivity which
enables them to deposit and remain on the hair where they impart the desirable conditioning effects for which they are
so well-known. The benefits these compounds offer in terms of combability and overall conditioning have afforded
them great popularity as the primary and most frequently used conditioning agents used in hair conditioners and
cream rinses.

Like the others in the range, INCROQUAT CTC-30 is an alkyl quaternary and is considered as such because it
contains a hydrophobic (fatty alkyl) group in the cation—a C16 linear chain in this case. Because the positively
charged cation makes the whole molecule substantive, its attached fatty chain is able to adsorb onto the hair surface
where it imparts lubricity for better detangling, improved combing and a smoother feel. As a result, fatty alkyl
quaternaries like the INCROQUATS provide enhanced conditioning.

INCROQUAT CTC-30 is a 30% active solution of cetyl trimethyl ammonium chloride, and as such, delivers light
conditioning due to its shorter chain length and the absence of a benzyl group. Its most outstanding feature is the
excellent static control it provides. As a light conditioner, INCROQUAT CTC-30 gives moderate wet combing.
Recommended use level: 0.5-5%

Quaternary Ammonium Compounds and How They Work

The anti-static properties and substantive behavior of quaternary ammonium compounds is largely the result of
opposing electrostatic charges—the positive charge they carry and the negative charge of the hair. The complex
protein of the hair fiber contains chemical groups that are electrostatically charged. The overall charge they carry is
thought to be slightly negative. (Skin is also thought to have a net negative charge.) Since quaternaries have the
opposite charge, their positive cation is attracted to the negative sites on the protein in the hair. This attraction causes
these quats to become substantive, enabling them to attach themselves to the hair fiber and remain on the hair. This
attraction also is stronger on hair that has been damaged or chemically treated since it is believed to have more
negative sites, primarily due to an increase in cysteic acid. Cysteic acid is a derivative of cysteine and forms when
disulfide bonds are broken and not completely reformed as such.

Quaternaries control static electricity by offsetting the effect of negative electrostatic charges that the hair can acquire,
particularly from combing. The act of combing tends to generate more negative charges on the hair. As the charges
accumulate, the hair fibers all become similarly charged, causing them to repel each other. This creates flyaway.
Quaternaries help prevent this undesirable effect because the presence of their positive charge neutralizes the
excess of negative charges on the hair. By doing so, they reduce the repulsive forces, allowing the hair to lie smooth
again.

Substantivity is a phenomenon by which materials that have opposing charges or like compositions to hair (or skin)
are more readily adsorbed onto or attracted to its surface, and once there, are resistant to subsequent rinse-off.

CRODAFOS™ CES with INCROQUAT™ CTC-30 in a Cream Rinse Conditioner HP-181
This cream rinse formula utilizes a combination of CRODAFOS CES and INCROQUAT CTC-30 to provide hair with
sheen, a silky soft feel, and improved texture. CRODAFOS CES is a new conditioning and emulsifying system that
promotes fast release of oils and conditioning agents to the hair. Its compatibility with quaternary conditioners allows
quick delivery of INCROQUAT CTC-30, the CRODAMOL esters and CROPURE® WHEAT GERM. Because
CRODAFOS CES also improves its application properties, the product rinses out extremely easily.
