Answer: The chain rule is designed to
differentiate functions composed of
other functions in a specific way (ie,
complex functions). By "constructed" I
don't mean addition or multiplication,
it's applying one function to a variable,
then applying another (or the same)
function to the result, and so on. There
is often a generalization of the chain
rule for functions of one or more
variables to transform a function that
depends on one set of independent
variables into another set of
independent variables related to the
first set.
