Learning Curves

Learning curve shows the rate of progress or improvement

in learning. A learning curve is a graphical representation
of which is drawn to representation which is drawn to
represent the progress of learning of an individual in a
given period.
Different types of learning curve

 Straight line learning curve.

 Negative accelerated learning curve or convex curve.
 Positively accelerated learning curve or concave curve.
 Combination type of curve or concave – convex curve.
Straight line curve
A uniform rate of progress in learning is presented by a
straight line curve

Negative accelerated learning curve or convex curve

If the rate of progress is very high at the beginning , then
slows down
Gradually.

Positively accelerated learning curve

If the rate if progress is very slow at the beginning , then
It increases .

Combination type of curve

It is a s – shaped learning curve forming by the combination
of a concave and convex curve depending on rapid or slow
initial success followed by a reverse condition in learning.
Uses of learning curves
 Helps to compare the progress of students.
 Helps to maintain proper account of the regular
progress of students.
 Provides the opportunity of self appraisal .
 To improve the methods of teaching.
 To understand the emotional life and other personality
characteristics of the learner.
