• Objective:  Students will get to use their imagination in this fun lesson. They will use
PowerPoint and online photos to build their dream playground. They will resize photos and have
to layer things properly. Students may use shapes and line tools as well. For the second part of
the assignment they will use Word type a short description of their master pieces, by doing so
they will practice their typing, sentence structures, grammar, and
• Materials needed to facilitate the lesson: Student need a computer and access to PowerPoint
and Microsoft Word
• Suggested group size: This is a single student project
• Procedures: Explain the projects to the students.. The chance to make their dream playground
using pictures from the web, and then afterwards they will write a small description of what they
added. Here you can see mine! An ocean front playground with a swing set, and a basketball
court. I added a petting zoo with a horse and some goats. And let’s not forget the taco truck!
Bring students to the computer lab for their Language Arts period and help everyone get on
Powerpoint. From here help them make the layout blank. And then tell them they can go to
insert, picture, online photos and from here they can look up whatever they can think of! Aim for
a minimum of 5 images or shapes.
If they need help adding lines or circles that can be done by going to insert, shapes and a whole
array of things pop up.

Once they have completed their dream playground, the next step is to open Microsoft Word and
have them type a description of what they have decided to add! In a minimum of four sentences
have them write the required paragraph. We are practicing sentences and sentence structures, so
spelling and grammar is important!
• Assessment: For this project to earn full credit (20/20) we are looking at creativity,
thoughtfulness, demonstration of knowledge, and well written sentences.
For the dream playground image for a student to get full points (10/10) there must be a minimum
of 5 images or shapes. We should be able to tell if the student put effort into their project and
tried to make everything look nice. The background image should take up the full background
with no white boarders and the following images laid on top with purpose. We are looking for
creative and thoughtful here!
For a grade of 8/10 the project will probably contain 4 or 5 images or shapes with some effort.
Boarders might show or pictures might appear hastily pasted.
For a grade of 6/10 the project will have 3 or less images or shapes with not much effort put in.
For a grade of less than 6 no effort or creativeness would be put in.
For the paragraph describing the dream playground image to get full credit (10/10), it needs to
contain a minimum of four well written, well structured, sentences. Spelling, punctuation, and
grammar matter. This should be an easy demonstration of sentence skills.
For a grade of 8/10 the paragraph will contain 3-4 sentences with minimal errors in grammar,
punctuation, or spelling.
For a grade of 6/10 the paragraph will have 3 or less sentences with some errors in spelling and
grammar.
For a grade less than 6 the paragraph will have 2 sentences or less with many errors and not
much demonstration of writing skills.

Student Sample Writing

My dream playground is on nice beachfront property! On top of luscious grass there is a

huge play structure with 2 slides and monkey bars. Across the way is a full sized basketball court

with enough balls for everyone. Next to the basketball court there is a swing set looking into the

water. My dream playground also has its own petting zoo with some goats and a horse you can

take turns riding. No playground is complete without its own taco truck, serving free unlimited

tacos!
