POKHARA UNIVERSITY

Level: Bachelor Semester – Spring Year : 2009

Programme: BE Full Marks : 100
Pass Mark : 45
Course: Strength of Materials Time : 3 hrs
Candidates are required to give their answers in their own words as far
as practicable.
The figures in the margin indicate full marks.
Attempt all the questions.

1. a. Determine indeterminacy (Internal and External) of the following 4

beam and frame. Also find degree of indeterminacy.

b. A bar of 900mm length is attached rigidly at A and B as shown in 11

fig. Forces of 50kN and 90kN act as shown in bar. If E = 200MPa,
determine the reactions at the two ends. If diameter of the bar is
25mm, find the stresses and change in length of each portion.

2. a. Derive an equation of elongation of bar of uniform section due to 7

self-weight and applied load P at the end of the bar.
b. Find principal moment of inertia with respect to given x and y axes 8
of the following given plane area and show the principal axes on
the figure.

3. a. Draw shear force diagram, axial force diagram and bending 9
moment diagram of the following given frame and show salient
features(values of important points).

b. Draw shear force diagram, axial force diagram and bending 6

moment diagram of the following given beam and show values.

4. A plane element in a body is subjected to a normal stress in the x- 15

direction of 100 MPa as wee as a shearing stress of 25 MPa, as shown in
fig. Determine
a. Normal and shearing stresses on a plane inclined at an
angle of 250.
b. Principal stresses and its orientation

c. Maximum shearing stresses and its orientation

5. a. Derive torsion equation for shaft having radius r, length 7

l, Young’s modulus of elasticity E, shear modulus G, Polar
moment of inertia J, due to torque T.
b. What are the assumptions made in elastic bending
8
equation? Derive the bending equation .

6. a. A cylindrical vessel is 2m long with 1m diameter and 20 6

mm thick wall. It was filled with fluid in atmospheric pressure. If
500000 mm3 volume of fluid is injected, calculate pressure
exerted on wall by the fluid, hoop stress and longitudinal stress
developed in the vessel.
b. A beam having cross section of 150mm wide and 9
300mm deep is simply supported over 3.5m span. If it carries an
uniformly distributed load of 5kN/m, calculate maximum
bending stress developed and maximum shearing stress
developed in the beam.
